My biggest shock factor was watching the price of homes rise since 2020. A blue collar worker could buy a $300k home in 2020. A $300k home doesn’t exist here anymore. Not even a mobile home is $300k anymore. So renting is the only option if you are only making $20/hr.
Yeah..prices have gone bonkers. Our house was around 200K when we bought it and now it is well over 3/4 of a million! I can't see how that would be a good thing unless your intent was to sell the Reno house and move to Arkansas or something like that!
The traffic, lol. We have rush 15 minutes. Drove through the bowl this morning from east to west at 0810. No congestion at all. Lived in suburban NYC and Phoenix. No traffic in Reno.
My late husband and I moved there January 1, 1994 and loved it for nearly thirty years, until Silicon Valley and Tesla moved in, and opened the floodgates.
Moved here years back to Cold Springs. Beautiful town and there are miles of side walks and paved trails between streets. Very quiet and safe. If you want quiet long walks for miles this is the place. We just need some grocery stores, and a Mom and Pop coffee shop!
With you bud. I left there 3 yrs ago after being born and raised there. I called it Nevada quick sand get stuck, to broke to live, to broke to leave. Couldn't get enough hours or a living wage, ended up losing home and being homeless.
That’s a rough story. I have been here since 1989 and thinks it’s a great place to live but there are some rhinos to be cautious about. I hope you are doing well wherever you ended up.
I moved to Reno from California 20 years ago.. I had had a rough time there trying to get good employment. Everything is basically minimum wage. Even tried to sell cars for a while, but none of the customers could qualify because their credit was so bad. I've been realized it was not as dynamic as it felt when I used to visit. So I sold it & went back to California after 10 years. The thing is my house in Reno barely went up in price..while California prices doubled + . So was a bad investment for me and a setback in life. Have some good memories, but glad I'm back in good old Bay Area nice suburb. Honestly, to be fair, Miss Reno. Sometimes and still like to visit.
I lived in Reno from 1982 to 87. I was a bartender at Harolds Club Casino. I loved Reno The wife and I were married at Lake Tahoe in 1984. I miss Going to Tahoe, Virginia City and camping at Frenchman Lake and Lake Davis. Great times. God bless Reno!!!
I have both Reno and Las Vegas added on my weather app on my iPhone. I’m amazed about the different temperatures shown despite being a part of Nevada. LV right now is 83, while Reno is 62 at 11 AM.
We are highly looking in to Reno for retirement. Currently in Colorado. Love that Reno has four seasons but the snow's not quite as bad as it is here ( I think..lol) looking to move in the next couple years hopefully. Looking at Reno or Prescott Arizona. Thanks for the very informative videos love watching them. Have learned a lot about your city:)
Thanks 4 the info! I'm considering a MOVE to the area, & this helps in the overall process. I'' make a visit next month... Again the 4 the overview... Mr. Hop....
Thanks for the video . I'm 65 and thinking of moving half way accross the country to retire in a couple of years. The greater Reno area seems like it might be a good fit. I will check to see if you have any videos geared towords the pro and cons of retiring in the area, if not it would be a great topic. Particularly one for 'regular' people meaning those without millions in retirement savings.
Moved here in 77. Will die here. City is in a transitional phase. Gaming no longer the top industry. Native American casinos up and down the west coast killed our gaming industry and is now only a few large casinos. Graduated from the university of Nevada as did both of my kids. Great university. Housing is very expensive because so many people want to move here. We have great outdoor activities and the Sierra Nevada mountains for skiing, camping, fishing, etc. No longer has the small town feel but is becoming a manufacturing and warehousing hub in the west. Vegas is a one hour flight and can be a great get away. One of the biggest school districts in the country and problems go with that. Retired teacher from Washoe County. Ballon Races, Hot August Nights, two of my favorite events each year. Family likes to visit for the classic cars in Hot August Nights. Four seasons with mild winters most years.
@@LivingInRenoTahoe I absolutely will! I’m single but have a dog and will be looking for a place to rent while I pay off student loans. I’m 24 and about to graduate from CSU Fort Collins.

I’ve lived in Reno since it was “The Biggest Little City In The World” I’m a small town gal so I really miss those days! Those days were quiet and clean, now it is busy & TRASHY… people abandon there unwanted vehicles and furniture etc. plus our streets and highways have lots of trash along the sides and many homes look like junkyards 🤦🏽♀️ I wish I could go back to the good old days!!!
Many of the abandoned vehicles and furniture were burners not people who live here. It’s getting cleaned up but sad how people come here and treat our city. Still a great place to live.
Similar climates but Denver is much bigger, more populated and spread out. Not sure what home prices are like there but we could talk and see what the story is. Both have great mountains and all 4 seasons.
I love Reno back in the 80 when an out-of-state ID was worth $7 at the Reno Ramada people are using brake fluid to wash off they're very $7 stamp on their hand then getting another $7 hand out at a different money cage them were the days
It all depends on where you live and where you are going. From my house in south Reno I am At mount rose in 20 minutes and sand harbor in 35. Yes many have to drive an hour or even more.
Been here in Reno for decades and still like it, but there are some drawbacks: (1) The traffic has become HORRIBLE as many vehicular idiots move into the area and (2) The politics have become more and more democrat which is just ruining what used to be a very peasant place to live. What amazes us is that SO MANY people move here to escape pollical issues and tendencies and then they do their best to make HERE, just like whatever they moved here to escape from and that which motivated them to move!
That’s something I hear often especially from people who have lived here a long time. I still love it here but we can always do better. Have a great Sunday.
But if you come over here to stay its better then calif and here people here is a open carry .for guns so if you think for trying to do something crazy you might think.about it ok
Please, please, remedy the vagrancy problems. Don’t tell me it’s worse in California, that is NO excuse. Temecula, California doesn’t allow the public camping and waving arms at people in the sky. Mayor Shieve, this is not the Reno 10 years ago. Enforce the city ordinances
Beside rebutting the cons, discussing cons is smart because (1) sometimes people have vague fears, things they've heard, that can be addressed with more information; (2) knowing what the challenges are allows people to decide whether it's right for them, possibly averting a mistake; (3) if you decide to accept the cons and make the move, you know what you're getting into and don't have unrealistic expectations. There are always trade-offs in any situation.
Reno, like all cities, sucks! LOL. It used to have a small town vibe but way too many citiots from other states (white platers) have moved in and ruined it. Washoe is a blue county with Clark (Vegas) being the only other blue county in the state. There are many beautiful areas surrounding Reno that are quite nice.
You can say that about any area that has growth. The "ruining" is just the growth. Mot people want to preserve and protect the place they moved to. The actions of people are what's important. So the challenge is to create your own town, 5,000 people, and then prohibit any growth beyond that.
I was born and raised here in Reno Tahoe (I’m 50 y.o.) and my grandparents lived here for a hundred years! #1. All of the scummiest, gross, losers that used to live on the streets in California, now live in Reno. If you go to midtown, or anywhere else in Reno, Sparks and Tahoe, you’ll be stepping over them when you’re going for your little family walk especially the ‘river walk’. #2. All of the real estate is so overpriced, in Reno/ Tahoe, only stupid people would pay these prices for housing and it’s 100% not worth it! #3. Reno has schizophrenic weather. It’s super dry here to the point where you look 20 years older than you really are and there’s way more freezing cold days than there are nice days! #4. Yes, the casinos are open 24 /7 but all of the food in all of the casinos is totally disgusting! #5. ALL of traffic is a horrendous, living hell, and for some reason all of these jackasses that moved here and ruined our town, have no idea how to drive their cars and all they do is cause problems on every single road and every freeway! #6. ALL SCHOOLS HERE ARE TERRIBLE! IF you want a real education, go live somewhere else or only do homeschooling! #7. Local government is totally corrupt, they will ruin you. #8. Public transit....... is a good place to get robbed, ra*ed etc. #9. The people here and horrible. They are on meth and/or they are pieces of trash humans that no one likes!!! #10. Hookers and drugs are everywhere and it has attracted people who like that lifestyle; so basically in a nutshell, Reno is permanently ruined and it’s a shi*tfest town now! 😣 Reno Tahoe- “This town in goin’ down“
A lot of cities have to deal with "homeless" druggies, and most are not handling well. But at least Reno's "outdoor living" weather is not as inviting as other cities. Taking a while but more cities are cracking down and discouraging this "lifestyle", hopefully Reno will do the same.

Probably didn’t hear the part about it being relative.
My late husband and I moved there January 1, 1994 and loved it for nearly thirty years, until Silicon Valley and Tesla moved in, and opened the floodgates.

Very comparable to most places. I did a video on cost of living here and we were just under the national averages.
