Back in the 1980s, I was staying in Munich and chanced to go to a showing of that Metropolis version with the Giorgio Moroder soundtrack. I was very impressed, and the next day I picked up a copy of the novelization that Fritz Lang's wife and collaborator Thea von Harbou had written. Believe me, it was by the far the worst novel I had ever read! Really terrible, schlocky stuff. No wonder Metropolis (while visually stunning) is such a steaming mess - the source material was rubbish, and the film's many weaknesses are even weaker in the book. It's hard to imagine how Thea von Harbou, who wrote the script for M, could have drafted such a weak screenplay for Metropolis. (If you haven't already read Siegfried Krakauer's commentary on Metropolis in his book From Caligar to Hitler, I greatly recommend it!)
Thank you for the recommendation! I've looked at my local libraries catalogue to see if they have the book and they do so I will definitely be checking it out.
