      @@ScottsTortoiseChannel I prefer eastern box turtles. My box turtles live outside as well. I do hibernate them in a large container in my enclosed back porch likewise to protect from raccoons and such. They have the run of my entire backyard because my fence is buried 2 feet underground. They are still mating this late in the year. I have 3 males and 2 females.

    WOW!!!!!,.....Creative,....looks like a lot of work."Poppa Pump" may have spoken for many viewers.Good luck,.......just see how things are 20 to 30 YEARS down the road.,......We've (my Family) have had our Aldabra,Galapagos,Sulcata (all girls) since {between} 1947/1953.,.....Over the years we've added Russians,Redfoots,Radiated,Star,.....and THEE list goes on."NOW" @ 70 years later everybody is having a great time.Our Aldabra "SWIMS" (freely) in the Ocean.The tortoises combined efforts of fertilizing (ha-ha) and spreading every Plant,Flower,Grass,Cacti over our 6+ acre property in the Lower Keys has given them the CHOICE of (approx.) 50 food/dietary sources to choose from>"NO" fighting or aggression,just simply ROUGH-HOUSING and spending afternoons in their 2(TWO) 1600'sq. "MUD HOLES".Believe it or not some of the "GANG" 'ill sleep 3/4 days at a time.,....The famed "KEY DEER" 'ill lay down beside 'em.AHHHHHH,the life of PREHISTORIC pets in your own yard.

    i know this is an old video, but anyone watching currently should know that chicken wire is inadvisable. it's great for keeping chickens in, but not great for keeping anything out. i recommend hardware cloth instead. a raccoon, fox, dog, or other predator can easily destroy chicken wire

    I love this! I live in Mississippi and very conflicted of having my little male Russian outside. There is a lot of wildlife here and I’m so scared that a hawk(or the balled Eagle like lives close by) will take him up or a fox.) I want him to be able to live in a bigger Area and live how he would kind of naturally live and inside I can’t really grow places in his enclosure. It would be nice to have a lot of plants. I put about 5 inches of dirt mixed with wood chips then I put hay in one spot for him to snack on. I would like him to be able to eat fresh grass inside of Timothy hay.
    Also, that is a huge space for the females. I hope it goes well.

    I’ve experimented many times with enclosures for my two RTs to live in and what I’ve learned is that if you have a big enough enclosure and more than two hides they won’t show aggression or be territorial so I mean it’s all up to your setup wether or not you can have a big enough enclosure

    That is an awesome encloser you have for your tootsies DidI have a large yard but no fence so I a little worried about birds I have a lot of birds squirrels and rabbits that come in my yard are they a threat to a midsize succus tortoise? Also, my plan was to build this on the side of my house in the back yard hope I will not have any problems with Homeowner association they are such jerks sometimes. yours was great.

    • @ScottsTortoiseChannel
      @ScottsTortoiseChannel  7 лет назад +2

      My tortoises are about 7-8" and I haven't had issues with other animals yet. My back yard isnt very large and fenced in all around. I would worry about Hawks and Raccoons. I did setup two fake owls just incase. Regarding HOA and neighbors I basically keep it "need to know". So unless someone asks, its private. Also check with your local ordinances regarding keeping testudo species.

    • @ScottsTortoiseChannel
      @ScottsTortoiseChannel  7 лет назад +2

      I was actually planning on it but I think it would be disapointing. What I have learned the last summer since building them is that LESS is MORE at least when it comes to Russians. Russians love to DIG DIG DIG, they basically destroyed everything. Alot of what I had in the enclosure I have removed. Keep it simple - Plant food, setup visual barriers, have water available and create DEEP Shade. I do plan on making a video of my indian star indoor enclosure. They do not dig as much and dont destroy the land.

  • @wimam1977
    @wimam1977 5 лет назад +1

    Does ur Russian tortoise hibernate?

    • @ScottsTortoiseChannel
      @ScottsTortoiseChannel  5 лет назад +1

      No I do not hibernate. There’s a lot of planning involved to keep them safe during hibernation. They can live just fine without it. I’m not against it though! Just gotta make sure you control the variables. Letting them do it naturally can be lead to death.

    • @ScottsTortoiseChannel
      @ScottsTortoiseChannel  8 лет назад

      Temps are good. I live in Texas so the summers around 100-115F and lows in the summer around 70. Im starting to bring them in now. I actually changed up this enclosure quite a bit because they really needed DEEP DEEP shade with those temps. Basically built them underground holes to hide in that they loved!
