I remember there was some controversy regarding the Rambo toy line, as a lot of people thought it was wrong marketing the character to children. Of course, toys based on R-rated films was not uncommon, as there had been toys of Alien earlier, and Robocop later on. At least Robocop made sense, since he already looked like an action figure come to life.
That Pepsi Free commercial is one of the silliest commercials in the 80's, & I love it. I also love the Back To The Future reference in the description whenever Pepsi Free is mentioned.
Catching up on the missed videos from this week while working out (work has been very busy this week as it’s Open Enrollment). This set is very therapeutic to me- perhaps it’s because of the sweet Cabbage Patch Babies, Wrinkles, Fluppy Puppies, and Teddy Ruxpin ads. I like the Macy’s commercials too; the scene in the first ad (with the lady with the fur coat) seems to be channeling Dynasty and the china settings were beautiful.
My dad when he had worked in an department store in the early 1980s told me about every Christmas there were riots or crazed behaviour by some people who were wanting to get the yearly buzz-worthy toy of whatever thing it was at this era, he used to say that it could be very stressful for those employees not ready for such things…but I thought to mention this because some of these commercials were for stuff that he said parents would sometimes go nuts over to get for their children for Christmas!??! Even before he passed away in 2014 my dad even used to say to his grandchildren “ if you want the big buzz toy or whatever it is called that you may want …buy it early before the rush of crazy people shoppers who stupidly waited until they were in short supply or the holiday shopping rush“….
I feel like I remember seeing live action actors in costume for MASK at some point? I forget if it was like a county fair or like somewhere at knott's or something it was too long ago!
7:44 - Given that Teddy Ruxpin cost $60 back then (which would be $175 today), this kid was very brave taking the toy on the bus like this without the fear of theft…
Universal should've bought the rights to M.A.S.K. years ago and slowly transitioned the Fast & Furious franchise into a big budget adaptation. Also those Rambo figures look badass.
OMG, I remember my dad having a MAC card in the early/mid-90s and it blew my mind that he was able to take his money out of a machine. Little did we know that debit cards would all but replace checks in less than 40 years.
Rambo was the reason that Rocky never joined GI Joe. (Rocky was being positioned to be there like SGT Slaughter and The Fridge but Stallone ended up going with the Rambo cartoon/toyline instead and the Rocky idea was dropped except that Big Boa still ended up as part of Cobra)
Being a huge fan of everything ninjas and karate as a kid i was always bummed i could never watch Karate Kommandos because it came on at like 2 pm weekdays and i didnt get out of school until 3
The last time we had a Meridian Bank ad here I said the music sounded very much like a Frank Gari 80s news composition, I still maintain this thought! But those Wrinkles..... scary in time for Halloween...
"Laser Tag, from Worlds of Wonder. Stadium not included." Drat, I was gonna buy that just for the futuristic, dystopian stadium. Next, you're gonna tell me that Laser Tag doesn't include a cool Borg Queen referee.
15:16 John C. McGinley! In sports, Syracuse beat Temple 27-24. Paul Palmer finished the season with 1,866 rushing yards, leading all of college football. The Penguins beat the Flyers 4-2. Sheetz beats Wawa always.
Centurions-i don't think that there was ever a episode set in space Rambo The Force Of Freedom Action Figures-imagine if Stallone were to do a live-action version(Ernie Hudson for Turbo..? Tia Carrere for Kat..? Lance Henriksen for Gen.Warhawk..?) Glad Cling Wrap-interesting way to make a smoothie..still might want to be near the sink just in case Isuzu Trooper II-Joe also lied about it having a parachute Welcome Back Kotter-a rare variation on the "Off my case, (x) face" insult(usually it was toilet) Lazer Tag- I was in attendance at the "Battle For The Washington Monument" match..it was not pretty 😞 Chuck Norris Karate Kommandos Action Figures-tv series intro is classic:"CHUCK NORRIS.."
The funny thing about Karate Kammandos even as a kid I recognized it as one big toy ad. It was one of the few that nearly everything used by Chuck and his team or the villains was a toy/accessory available. Also, it felt like it ran more than four episodes, then again everything from my childhood felt like it had longer runs.
Macy’s Fall Sale- The outfit that the man who’s jogging is wearing at 1:23 reminds me of the outfit the main character wears in “Where’s Waldo?” . Wrinkles- This has to be one of the strangest looking Dog Plushie Dolls I’ve ever seen. Shop N Bag- There’s something about the design of the mascot at 19:58 looking like a Bag Boy wearing a paper bag as clothing that makes it interesting and humorous to me.

They were tied to the "Rambo: The Force Of Freedom" cartoon series: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rambo:_The_Force_of_Freedom
0:30 - Clean toilet bowl fanatics? I have a mental image of a bunch of people in a basement gathered around a toilet and inspecting every inch…
and grinning ear to ear.

That TV Guide commercial was something special! 😂
Loved all my Cabbage Patch Dolls and those babies were adorable!!! ❤️
Kinda crazy when you consider 38 years later, of all stores, Macys is still hanging on. Not sure theyll make it to 40 years tho at this rate.

13:15 - I guess Worlds of Wonder used their profits from Teddy Ruxpin to pay for this elaborate commercial…
Hm, I wonder if Karate was an option package on Vettes back then, because a Karate Vette sounds pretty great.

2:02 Considering the reputation of early Hyundai's, I would take my chances and wait for a good quality used car.

'Penquins'😂
7:59 Aaaaaaaaah!!!
THE DEVIL!!!
5:45 Penquins?
Could be a typo, but if the font was generated via video maybe there were limitations on how low the characters could go?
