I am old enough to remember that night. Yes he was one of a kind. And on Sept 4 1984, another great Quebecer succeeded him as PM. But this country never recovered from his multiculturalist vision of this country that strangles Quebec identity. His son is the heir of that vision and unfortunately, as his father, the economy always was secondary. But under PET, Canada was much more respected in the World.

. But under PET, Canada was much more laughed at around the world. He was an international joke, especially when the whole world knew Maggie was sleeping around with anyone. I Lived in Montreal at that time and was well connected with The Westmount Crowd. She was known locally as, 'The Village Bicycle.' I am sorry to say that is true.

From what I gather, until Trudeau Sr. got into office, Canada was a nation in an identity crisis - caught between conservatives stressing loyalty to Britain and liberals stressing independence from Britain and closer links to the States. Trudeau united both camps around a new identity, multiculturalism and a cult of personality around himself. It worked until his socialist economics ground the economy to a halt.
Today, Trudeauism is out of date. Senior's economics have shown to be unproductive. His multicultural vision is now giving way to wokism. And his son is shown to be out of his league.

@mickwest7918 What exactly does it mean to "love" Western Canada? I've heard all the hype sold to the Western people, by way of cunning politicians and low-priced tabloid newspaper, with their half nude wannabe models. I know they wanted everybody to think that the worst world recession since the 1930s was due to Trudeau, and a finance minister opening up a single page of a budget speech to a zoom len camera. But what does it really mean?
Does it mean to sell out oil interests to foreign tycoons, who ended up thanking Canada with neo-liberal policies, selling out our industry to those willing to subject their people to the lowest wage? The winner...The People's Repulic of China! After all those years of Peter Worthington and company calling Pierre Trudeau a communist!
What of those "fiscal geniuses" called the Socred and Conservative Premiers? They were fueled by the money of the oil lobby and a few wealthy landowning ranchers that flaunted themselves over the Calgary Stampede, wearing spotless cowboy hats, while the sucker's that fell for them and their "alienation". spent their hard earnings at the same shopping malls and department stores as anyone from Toronto. Many were preachers, with names like Aberhard, Bennett & Manning, preaching against the evils of Douglas' medicare plan. I'm sure that helping working people alienated big pocketed landowners, who wanted to drill oil, keep their taxes really low and charge as much rent as people were will to pay not to freeze to death.

“All of Trudeau’s talks were carefully staged. He knew the message before it was even delivered. Trudeau was prepared, often knowing what the journalists were going to ask in advance, allowing him to shape the narrative. This level of preparation has been the key to his public success, projecting confidence and control, but it raises questions about transparency and spontaneity in his communication with the public.”

To all the negative comments regarding Justin Trudeau, yes he made mistakes, and this last one was a big one, but we will never really know what actually happened, there's his side, her side, and the truth. Having said that JT has to move on. But we must remember that Pierre was older, wiser than JT was
Pierre was in his 50s, 60s, Justin 40s, 50s. So let's all calm down.

Not a Liberal, but I respect Pierre Trudeau, admire the dedication he had for Canada, and think he deserves the permanent mark he made in Canadian history, even if some of the things he has done had effected Canada negatively in the long run.
His son though is a giant disaster that even my Liberal friends hate to come out and admit but still acknowledge quietly. And now the two biggest world powers, being the United States and the People's Republic of China, are laughing everyday at Justin and the "peoplekind" that voted to put his spoiled delusional ass in Parliament Hill.
While other remarkable leaders around the world today are busy trying to shape their countries and establish better relations among each other, Justin wastes taxpayer dollars on coffee, skating rinks, cringey vacations, and blindly funding terrorism. While Macron establishes better relations between France and India, Trudeau dances and parties in that same country. While Trump is having dinner with Duterte shortly before the summit, Trudeau takes selfies at a fastfood joint in the same city.
The only "accomplishments" he seems to do when it comes to Canadian government is sign politcally correct rules into place just to please criminals or sensitive kids going through dumb phases in life.
Even with the changes Pierre made, I cannot imagine he would have even pandered to the things Justin does. People only wanted his son because he carried the Trudeau name, he's "hot", and he promised cannabis but instead gave Canada beasteality and honour killings first.
Pierre to Justin is like Darth Vader to Kylo Ren.
