That was perfect. Keep it up. When I was young I only enjoyed the catch. Anymore I enjoy the the fight of the mighty fish. Well played. Four pound tippet and twenty pound Trout. I love it.
love the vid's Kevin. Been some good flows in that river this season... Was lucky to come across a 9.48 lb sea run last weekend which had made it's home in a shady pool well up river, lost most of its silver colour but was in great condition. Will be trying my luck with some Salmon fishing this weekend, cheers
Hi Tim, yes it has been a good season in that river with many fish in the 5-7lb range being caught. The condition factor is amazing this year on nearly all the fish I've had. That trout you caught must have been a real stunner.
just a hint mate... to load / string up your flyrod faster.. strip 3 meter out of the reel.. softly double over the last few cm, then push that thru the guides.. much easier and faster.. great river..
Not criticizing but I would have had my rod tip pointed at the river bank on your side to get his head turned. That has always helped me on bigger fish, I strip them in more than getting them on the reel also but to each their own. Beautiful spot and enjoyed watching you fish....tight lines my friend.
I Remember the ones I loose, more so than the ones I land. One that is still fresh in my mind occurred on Wolf Creek, near Wolf Creek Pass, in SW Colorado! I hooked a Rainbow and it took off down stream, made two jumps and was gone, took me into the backing that one did! That was 26 years ago, and it's like it was yesterday!
That is an incredible area, drove through there several times from Denver on our way to the San Juan. Fall is absolutely the best with all the aspens mixed in. Were you visiting or?
Well it's my five day stop on the way to the San Juan- I fish the area for about a week and then go down to the San Juan for a week or two! Most years, I leave right after labor day, my work generally ends for the year around that time and I just go on a road trip, and fish from Sept to mid or end of October when Rifle Deer Season starts! On the way back I always hit the fall steelhead in the Great Lakes region!
I gotta agree with the ones you lose. Though not big by most people's standards, I hooked a cutthroat in a creek not far from where I live and you could step over he creek in most places. Probably around 14". But i had to go down to 1 lb tippet and he broke me off four trips in two years. I still get a smile at that one.
When you thread your fly rod, don’t poke the tippet up thru each runner, because when you drop it the weight of the fly line pulls it back thru all the runners & you have to start again. Instead fold the flyline double & poke the loop up thru each runner, until it’s out of the tip guide THEN drag the tippet thru. If you drop the flyline while threading up, it only goes one runner back & the doubles loop catches in the next guide & you haven’t lost all that time wasted that could have been spent with a fly in the water. For a guide who doesn’t know how to thread a fly rod you cast & hook trout pretty well! Once you learn how to play them you could be dangerous! 😂👍

There's an element of skill involved in landing a big fish,no doubt, but it don't hurt to have a little good luck on your side either... Enjoy your videos.
Nice sight fishing. I enjoy the same stalking up here in Alaska but it's a bead most of the time. Nothing wrong with a long distance release. Well done none the less
A good trick to loose less bigones is this get a 15lb tippet, on 3' of 15lb florocarbon, 3' 25 lb blue and 18" of 30lb hard type. Get a reel you can palm and let off the drag completely just use enough to keep from casting out line on a dead drift. Then use the tip of your rod as the drag and palm to less than the breaking point. You can tell when the fish is running away against your palm when the fish stops for a break reel in making it a loss gain fight. This way you tire out the fish who will eventually swim towards you in an attempt to make it to the bottom where big fish will rub there face on the sand and rocks to break you off. If you are getting them to strip you out your set up is not right. Even with smaller test lines a fish that runs off thinks that it will break off there is angleing tricks to keep this from being the case. Florocarbon is definitely a strong idea because it disappears in the water.
I still find it amazing that we can use 15lb leader in clear water like this. I've landed a lot of fish I probably would have lost if it weren't for fluorocarbon.
Any reason why you didn't wade out towards him?? Especially after losing the first one. I'd have been stripping like hell and walking towards him to keep from the bushes. What a PERFECT run of water though. I'd never fish anywhere else.
I lost a big Hen salmon on the Miramachi river New Brunswick Canada, the Blackville pool, She pulled , I raised the rod set the hook, She bolted, never broke water like a buck would have, nope she ran for home like a train. My reel has never screamed like that, no way to follow, she was on a mission get up stream, after seconds that felt longer a final pop was all I heard and she was gone. I am just guessing she was 40lbs Salmon, I will never know ?
Wyatt Moore You won't regret it Monday night I landed two 22" Browns and lost a third that was much bigger.. The river comes from under the Dam at Table Rock lake so it stays 55 degrees year round.. Ideal for big trout
Wyatt Moore only about a day of driving. 😜 When I was stationed in Germany I met a club of fly fishermen who sent members all the way out to Arkansas just to fish the White
+Kevinohanlons yea works perfect man, was going to get myself a GoPro an record a few off my days on the rivers an lakes. Keep at them mate tight lines
Hey Kev, love your videos but it always amazes me how many fish you seem to hook from side on or even slightly upstream. How do you get into position without spooking them?!
Saw the fish jump...That is NOT a big trout...I have caught browns in the Smokies much bigger...Biggest was a 9 1/2 lb brown on 2lb test line using a 24th oz roostertail...
Not sure I would post a video like this. Then again, I use a spinning reel and my trout don't get away. From what I do know about fly fishing... you need to be more aggressive and let your rod be the shock absorber. If you're going for ocean run browns, they can get pretty big and strong, you need some strong gear and strong moves.
K D fortunately, the opinion of a spin fisherman is worth, in a fly fishing forum, the same as a fart in open air. Yes, there are things the angler could have done to catch the fish, but you’re in no condition to speak. Apples and oranges, or better, a T bone versus a Wagyu Steak.
Was ist los? 😎😎👍👍😇🎣🎣

Reminds me of steelhead fishing in Southeast Alaska!
Better than a good day at work .
Geoffrey Carpenter not if you fish for a living. LoL.
I guess the fish don't get that big by being dumb. Awesome clip brother! Adrenaline pumping.

That's why it's called Fishing..
Turn em or lose em. Turn rod horizontal, that’s where the stopping power is.
Omg what a location - keep that a secret !!
Awesome. Love smart fish..
Next time you should try in reservation lake because this guy along time ago caught a big brown trout three feet tall
It's in arizona
Definitely should have used a lure and much higher pound test on your line. You could have reeled the fish in no problem.
That was awesome great job!
nothing finer than a big fish on a fly rod
Thank you
Beautiful spot.
Very good mr,👍🛎👍
Amezing your fishing
That counts as 1 in my book...its not about the catching...its about being right.

Walk back to the bank, tighten your drag abit and maybe use stronger leader
Fold your fly line in a small loop and thread your guides with that, way easier.....
