Chris has apparently been clean for 14 years. Both of his kids played college ball at UTEP and his son Julian is now playing overseas in England, even played in the nba for a few games. Dude clearly fucked up a lot but I will say he seems like an alright father.
One of the most star-crossed drafts in NBA history. It seemed like the curse started with the Len Bias tragedy and then just spread through the rest of the first round of that draft like a virus. Not only Chris Washburn, but William Bedford and the late Roy Tarpley also saw their careers destroyed by substance abuse. Strangely enough, that next draft of that round produced a bounty of successful NBA players which included Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman, and all-stars Mark Price, Jeff Hornacek and Kevin Duckworth.
When he came out of HS he had a bigger reputation than Shaq, a mobile center who could run the floor, ball handle and jump through the roof. It was between Washburn and Danny Manning as to who was the better freshman and if I had put money down around 84 or 85 I would have certainly taken Washburn. He didnt have a decent basketball IQ and was effecrive at NC State because he was so physically dominant compared to everybody around him. Had he stayed clean and had his head on straight he might of had a career similar to Shawn Kemp. Its a shame we never got to see that.
I'm no genius but, have any drug addicts ever had the thought, "If I try this drug I'm going to be addicted for life so I'm never going to try this drug." Easy solution. Very easy. Worked for me. That's how I over came my drug addiction, by never trying the drug in the first place.
The whole 86 Draft was busts. It was Brad D & Len Bias. Unfortunately never found out how great Bias could've been. I'm sorry, Sabonis was in draft too but didnt come to NBA til 95.
I remember seeing Chris Washburn in the 1984 McDonald's All American All Star Game in Los Angeles, CA. at Pauley Pavillion. It's a shame to see someone with that kind of size and talent destroy it all on drugs.
@@colderbeer Why is he a bad person. Just lazy and a dope fiend. Not being funny. Wolfpack fans don't like him bc they made the Elite 8 in 1986. What if Washburn didn't quit on them.....
We all make mistakes and we're all flawed people. At least this Dude admits his mistakes and is trying to turn himself around. I wish him luck and I hope he stays clean.
They say the drugs caused the stealing, wrong. The dude was stealing in college left and right, the stereo was the only time he got caught. My aunt worked at an A and P near NC State, they caught him stealing in there but didn't press charges just told him to stay out. He's a victim of his own lack of character. Lucas say's he was "pushed through the system" ..gtfo..he had a job,a great paying one and fucked up.

I had caught an ESPN special on the 86 draft. That's where this video is from but the entire episode is long. I'll continue with more videos of that special real soon
I remember watching him fly down the entire length of the court and throw down a windmill jam. A 6'11" 235lb mountain doing that at least 5 years before Shaq was even on the radar. Shame so many great players of that era fell to cocaine use.
This is how dumb Warriors management was back then: They did a background check and talked to Jimmy V who implored them NOT TO DRAFT HIM because he knew all about his issues. You know what happened next. True story.
He was a high school phenom. Saw him play in the 1984 McDonald's All American All Star Game here in Los Angeles. A guy from my high school was also playing in that game, John Williams. Danny Manning was in that game too.
@@senseichess8688 Yeah Brad Daugherty was the number 1 pick in that 1986 draft. He was an all star in the NBA. Washburn put a career high on Daugherty everytime he faced him. He was garbage in the NBA. They gave a drug addict 3 million dollars. Ballgame
I recall vividly dick Vitale bashing him while he was still at NC State and the reason I remember it was because I knew Vitale was good friends with coach Valvano. At the time I thought damn there must be some serious shit going on behind the scenes that we do not know about and that turned out to be the case. Washburn was likely stealing and using like a complete fool way before the nba.

it is not a curse but a reflection of the problem with education and culture.
