Thérèse Martin was born on January 2, 1873, in Alençon, France. She was the youngest of nine children in a devout Catholic family. At the age of 15, she entered the Carmelite convent in Lisieux, France, and took the religious name Sister Thérèse of the Child Jesus.
St. Thérèse is best known for her autobiography, "The Story of a Soul," in which she described her spiritual journey and her "Little Way" to holiness. She emphasized the importance of simple acts of love and trust in God.
Despite her short life, she suffered from tuberculosis and died on September 30, 1897, at the age of 24. After her death, her writings and spirituality gained widespread recognition. She was canonized as a saint by Pope Pius XI in 1925.
