People mentioned that i was wrong about the weapon stats in the beginning of the video saying that the weapon has become more popular as the percentage goes up from 1.8 to 3.0.
And perhaps they are right. But we can't forget that if we rank the weapons the lance went from second least played (GU) to least played weapon (Rise)
Maybe i wasn't 100% accurate. Absolutely possible! I'm not perfect either. Regardless i believe the video is still correct as it does explain why the average person picks other weapons over the lance. Hence the title: Why nobody plays lance.

    • @bennyhoffa7648
      @bennyhoffa7648 3 месяца назад +23

You just explained how you aren't correct. Stop doubling down because math is hard for you lol.
Lance is the least picked weapon - cool, but lets not turn our brains off quite just yet. World (and Rise) sold a hell of a lot more than GU AND the percentage of players using the lance is higher than in GU. That flat out means more people are using the lance. And if it's the least picked now at 3% while it was the second to last in GU at 1.8% the only thing that tells me is that weapon distribution is looking better now than a generation ago.
I'm not taking issue with your title - every Lance main knows their weapon is a niche pick. I'm taking issue with the giant contradiction at the very start of your video that essentially said "more people are playing lance than ever before, so obviously lance is losing popularity".

@@bennyhoffa7648 this! Lance got a higher percentage of player population playing it in Rise compared to World. The decrease in placement comes only because players that played popular weapons switched to OTHER low popularity weapons that aren't lance, thus increasing their percentage more. I think it's just false advertising. Lance is touted as a highly defensive, highly immobile, non flashy weapon. And it is, when you're a beginner. But when you learn it, it becomes more offensive oriented, highly maneuverable in terms of being able to be exactly where you need to be and hit exactly where you need to hit, and can do some really badass things. Monsters just cannot shake off a skilled lance player, you're like an evil barnacle on their side.
And in truth, i'm fine with lance being unpopular. It makes it more satisfying when you party up and have people going "Wait, you can do that!?"

The thing with lance is that it largely appeals to a certain kind of player that's somewhat rare. A huge majority of players feel powerful by dishing out huge amounts of damage, whether it be in a series of small but fast attacks, one big super charged up attack, or 'special moves' that requires preparation before a payoff. The point is, most people like to be "DPS", to reference the 'holy trinity', not so much 'tank' or 'support/heal'.
Personally, I'm the type of person that feels powerful by being able to tank big hits and shrug them off like it's nothing. Or, redirecting an enemy's attack back at them, as is the case with counter attacks (which as you said, longsword does this now so people who like counters are just going to pick that over the lance anyways, especially since their counter doesn't even need guard skills slotted to function properly).
Thing is, tanking hits doesn't complete hunts, dealing damage does. Assuming you have the right build with augments that heal you as you poke and basically remove sharpness depletion, you can have much more uptime attacking the monster than other weapons, since you don't need to dodge out of the way and can instead just tank the hit... _usually_... Then of course we have specific attacks that not even Guard Up helps with. Even with all those skills you still take chip damage, get huge knockbacks despite having the largest, beefiest shield in the game, and lose sharpness faster than dual blades... it can be pretty disheartening. I'm really hoping for something special in the upcoming Lance showcase for Wilds. At the time of writing the next showcase comes out in about 2 and a half hours, so who knows, we could find out today, and if not I consider myself pretty patient, I'll wait and admire all the cool stuff other weapons are getting too because so far Capcom have been on fire with what we've seen thus far.
EDIT: Forgot to mention mobility is actually pretty damn good but rather unintuitive. A new player isn't going to know all the tricks to stick to the monster.

I recall evade-lancing in 4U which was always goofy and fun. Lance then was actually highly mobile and one of the best dodgers, since evasion 3 meant 100% of your side step duration was i-framed. Pair with evade extender and you could back-hop across the map as fast as anyone else. It's actually still fairly mobile, but getting that mobility isn't as intuitive.
Lance has been a longterm favorite for me and is my most used weapon. One of the coolest moments I've had was in multiplayer against the fatalis in Iceborne, and realizing that my shield actually would part his fire breath attack. Dashing in front of a stumbled ally to save them from the flames felt SO rad. But overall, lance's appeal hinges a lot on the matchup; it feels great against fatalis, but horrible against alatreon, etc. You're meant to be able to attack while being attacked, yet fights that punish countering disproportionately hurt lance more than any other weapon; and they tend to introduce more and more of these fights late game.
Sunbreak's lance also has felt way better compared to Rise as they buffed some of its numbers and adjusted how some of the wirebug skills work, though it's definitely more of a sustain / death-by-a-thousand-cuts weapon. I honestly wish that they'd just remove tripping or just give most of its moves super armor; a lot of skills for lance just feel too mandatory to get by, which reduces your ability to slot in more interesting or offensive skills.

A lot of people have the notion that Lance’s mobility is bad in some way, and frankly I find that if you actually use its full toolbox, it has some of the best positional control in the game. You obviously have steps, but there’s also guard dashes, an insanely powerful movement utility, and for gapclosing, nothing comes close to the charge, outpacing every other weapon easily, while also being able to turn on a dime.

First the Things i disagree with in the video:
1.Lance's popularity has been increasing not decreasing. Yes in mhgu it was at rank 13 and in the other two it was at 14 but the actual % of players playing the weapon has increased. GL just increased more thats all.
    2. I dont think giving Lance a new combo would destroy the weapon. Lance in sunbreak uses mostly Gruard advance + leaping thrust and it still plays super aggressivly like it should. I think the way mhgu and mhr tried to go about it was just wrong. mhr went for slapping which just feels wrong. And mhgu's longer poke on its own was fine but it replaced the third poke meaning, if you didnt have enough time to do it, your main combo was just 2 pokes.
    Things i agree with:
    1. Insta block is fun but the counter shouldnt be two slaps and it also takes you out of the fight, since you have to stop attacking in order to use it, unlike the other counters (still really f*cking fun though)
    2. Lance is way to deco dependend. Decrease the sharpness cost, give it build in guard up (not just on power guard) and give its block/counters an build in insta block effect, so you dont have to build guard anymore if you're good enough at timing.
    3. It's not flashy and could easily be. Just give it corckscrew jab back or drill attacks or the hundred thusts from mh explore or an attack where you throw the weapon or two hand the lance etc. There are many things you can do to make lance flashy without destroying the weapon. And if they are worried that people will start spamming it, just attach it to a bar that needs to be filled up first like mhgu did or make the attack take so long that using it is a huge risk, so you cant always use it, like corckscrew jab.
    4. Multiplayer lance isn't as fun. Lance's counters are super fun but in multi player the monster doesn't always attack you. Having a high animation commitment attck that is flashy and hits hard, that you can do in those times the monster isn't attacking you, would help a lot with that. (and almost every weapon has an attack like that. Even faster weapons like dual blades (blade dance) or bow (thousand dragons) have high animation commitment attacks.
    5. Lance would benifit from an actual weapon tutorial. Lance has all of the mobility it needs, but since it's way harder to use than on other weapons newer players will feel slow and clunky.

Main issue with multi poke in GU was how it was lenghty and replaced the third poke, but what if you could do it on command after the third poke? Rise's Swipe worked as well, but it was hard getting used to implement it to the poke combo due to muscle memory

as a newer lance main, as of like 2 weeks before this post, poke poke poke is a perfectly acceptable combo. the lance seems to have the rapid fire attack rate of the dual blades without locking you into the longer animations, forcing you to use a gauge, and using up less sharpness for roughly the same dps without the sharpness bonuses.
it also allows players to play more slowly if they want and watch a monster, learn its attack timings, and ignore most of the knockdown attacks.
the alternative is my play style where i mostly ignore my shield and go full aggro with status effects, repeat charge jumps for mounting, and tail removing
also please give let me know any tips you might have. I've used mostly HBG / LBG and dabbled in gunlance before finding the lance on my second playthrough of world and am still learning the lance and its ins and outs

As a Bowgun main who usually starts with LBG, until i get the stuff to make HBG enjoyable, i know very well how painful farming can be and i can totally agree that its just easier and more rewarding to grab something like the Longsword or the Bow, that are easy to pick up, rewarding to play and hard to master, but tbf because Weapons like the Lance and the Hunting Horn too, are so hard to pick up and hard to get reward out of, they have their own community and thats actually something very nice imo.

lance is definitely not boring, but my problem about it is actually the shielding mechanics, you need guard 5 and guard up to actually rely on your shield without those skills, it feels like your character is just holding a trashcan lid for shielding, early to mid game investing on those skill mean you are sacrificing dmg skills for a better shield, in MHW its hard to enjoy it without the the endgame/fatty gears.

This leans more into the problem with Lance. It’s way way too skill dependent. It needs more inherent value built into the shield. For me, the biggest hit I took at least in Iceborne was that other weapons just managed to block better with less risk (HBG), dodge and counter better (LS), stick to the enemy better (CB/SA/IG) and deal more damage ({any weapon}). Add to that the elemental damage nerf (why????) and the mandatory clutch claw, which coupled with it having one of the slowest sheath animations made it almost mandatory to counter claw (which is impossible with some attacks, or you lose some valuable seconds if the monster was knocked down).
Chip damage was massive. Knockback was horrendous. Guard up was awkward to slot more often than not. Trying to slot 4-5 guard decos was a huge tradeoff and also hard as balls to slot.
It is super good and you can hardly cart with it. Triple countering AT Velkhana's tail stab, punishing even Fatalis body slam (which you can outheal despite the damage you take), having a monster charge at you and waiting for it like "are you sure about this?" is the best feeling in the game, but you feel actively punished for using the least flashy, least damaging, hardly dodging, most punishing weapon in the game, since if a monster hit and pushed you back, it is much harder to stick back to it, but if you counter properly you're just a constant damage source.
I don't want Capcom to nerf other weapons. I want them to have fun. I just want them to make us feel like real bricks, which is how the weapon feels. I want to be able to actually stick to the monster and not be pushed back 5 meters for a crap attack. I want to have variety in elemental builds :(

To be fair if you have instant muscle memory then there are tons of weapons that dominate endgame monsters, there's a reason why speedrunners obliterate everything with LS or in Rise with bow's parry mechanic but most people don't have instant muscle memory even if they played the game for a while they are just more comfortably sucking at the game which is perfectly fine but for them lance will always feel sluggish and slow and I'm speaking from experience because I'm one of the comfortable suckers who just cannot do a single hunt with lance because I fall asleep before I get to the point where the weapon becomes fun.
It has to click from the get go to have the motivation to master the weapon and for most players it just simply wont do that before they find the fun in one of the top 5 most popular weapons because they are popular for a reason.

But instead of basic slashes, it is based on perfect blocks/counters/shield bash throughs
And the increase means higher damage for lance while higher stun for the shield bashes
    It will be in stages:
Level 1 (white) simply increases damage/stun; equivalent to atk U S
Level 2 (yellow) increases it further, atk U M, gives small movement speed boost and gives your weapon +10% affinity
Level 3 (red) changes the move set completely to make it flashier and even faster and give an atk U L
It resets the stacks if you dont attack for a while or simply runs out
Movesets also have more emphasis on shield

On a perfect run, sure, I'll do more DPS with a bow; but I'm a million times more likely to die, and even if I can soak a hit or two, I'm constantly playing 'run around and heal' instead of actually dishing out damage. My suggestion on lance. It is too one dimensional. I think it needs:
    1. Protected shield combo with lance. Like sns but better.
    2. Protected shield bashes for stun to give cc utility.
    3. Give super armor to lance like longsword. Makes no sense a sword user with no protection doesn’t get tripped vs someone holding a wall.
    4. Give a lance clash finisher.
    5. Best for last: war shouts for a new feature while guarding that uses a gauge.
Example: taunt - draws agro from large monsters. Can save a teammate in trouble.
Battle roar: increase attack power for a limited time, draws agro slightly.
    Intimidation: reduce monster attack power.
Valor chant - 1 time use provides moxie effect to team for a limited time.

I used to be a Lance basher… until I actually played it and realized it’s true potential. While I admit, there is not as much flash to the attacks “compared” to other weapons that are designed to be flashy. Lance does have some sophisticated flashy moves that are outside of the poke poke combo.
I will be the first to admit after becoming a Lance main that the moveset isn’t huge, even with sophisticated flash. So it’s easy to learn, but we all know the truth. Lance is all about the survivability. That shield is what makes the weapon magical.
My build is Wide Range Lance, throw on some quick sheath (if you need it) and not only am I surviving the fights to keep you alive. I’m doing reliable damage and can take aggro for you in between me healing you.
That and it’s oh so satisfying to block Fatty flame while protecting allies then to be healer on top of that. Support Lance is so much more fun than Brute Lance to me. But like every weapon argument, if you think it sucks, you just aren’t good with it yet.

Great video, excellent edit of the lance being a badass weapon! I’m hyped for the lance preview for wilds, curious to see how the focus mode will impact it too.
My fav part about the lance is how you’re supposed to be in the monsters face, guarding against their attacks and getting your shots in when you have the opening. It feels more like a back and forth fight to me as opposed to just relying on dodge skills. I used to main LS and IG but fell in love with the lances playstyle

Honestly the main reason most people I know don’t like lance is
    1. It’s not the flashiest or the most cool
    2. Why use lance when you could use lance .. but it’s also a gun

I play lance... It's not my main, I'm a certified Hunting Horn main but I dabble in most weapons quite a bit (With the goal of getting proficient with them all eventually) and Lance is one I keep coming back to. Something so satisfying about being able to just stay in the monster's face and keep doing damage while it tries and fails to stop you.

I take offense to that, I almost never used guard or guard up until later, when it is easy to slot some level or free. I use mainly oensive skills, the basic defence, counter and dodge in more than enough

I really liked lance. I don't really care about speed or flash. But I'd still say its main issue is that it feels like trying to walk through meter high snow. I do want a defensive weapon, but I also want to be able to reach the battle and move enough to defend other people.

    NOT EVEN GONNA LIE
I go lance when i want to tryhard in rise nowadays. Its so easy to block a majority of attacks, the silkbind counter thats basically just the move from generations ultimate gives you insane dps boosts to the lance, and the shield bash changing lances combo after 18 years changed so little, but so much for its basic attack string.

6:15 Guard up has been a mainstay skill for lance since at least tri, if not earlier. The real issue with lance now is that they nerfed the effect evasion skills have on its back and side hops, so now it feels like there's only one "real" way to play it, and that's by blocking and poking. In 4U and GU you could stack evade extender and evasion instead of blocking skills and dance around monsters with plenty of s, mobility being a non-issue.

Ironically the last 3 reasons around 4:56 are completely valid. There are some weapons that will turn you into a f*cking unstopable death machine. Valor LS, Valor HBG, Valor GS, Rise LS, SA ZSD spam in World/IB. There is no world in which lance can OBJECTIVELY compete with these playstyles. It's impossible. The math just does not check out.
Striker Lance in GU is already an anomaly and it allows some really good runs and speedruns, but it is nowhere close to the best speedrun weapons, unless the match up is decent.
Capcom has a clear bias towards... certain weapons ( I'm looking at you filthy weeb stick ). It's sad, but they just cater to the lowest common denominators, which are popularity and raw weapon power. They can't nerf the stronger weapons, because it would alienate a lot of people.

So, the thing that always hyped me up about the lance was how the shield felt so fluid to use in combat, and I always feel like a badass when I take a knee and endure the most savage attacks from the monster that I'm fighting. For me, it is flashy in how it defends and that's what really got me hooked on it. Outside of that, it has many tools to adjust your position, such as the humble side steps, the dodge with shield raised, and the lance's charge. Also, it reminds me a lot of how the NPC knights in a Dark Souls game would typically fight with a shield and spear, which is a fantasy that I always wanted in the Souls games.
They just released the video for the lance in Wilds, so I'm curious to see your thoughts on it. Personally, I'm really excited that they leaned a bit more into the shields offensive capabilities.

As someone who has dabbled with the lance on and off. And had a blast with it each time
But had never fully mained it. Never beat fatalis with it.
This beautiful video, has made me decide to stick with it. On my second playthrough of rise, an 100th🤣 playthrough of world. To beat fatalis with it
Then take on a whole new game of wilds.
Because I love rare to be seen things, underrated, non "meta" things. And then take them, get good with them, and use them. An outdo the "better", more common things.

Clutch claw sucks but honest to God lance felt so fun with claw counter and its built in super armor, I could see a cool timeline where they kept that move in and made it so lance is the "soften monster parts" weapon since countering was given to a weapon that totally needed it more (the other half of the roster)

  • @richter_h

Most hunters care about MUH DPS, disregarding the fact that monsters can and will one-tap them whenever they make a small mistake (mis-timed that longsword counter and back to camp you go!). Especially among new players from other action games, slow and clunky weapons like lance and gunlance are skipped often because they wanna live the power fantasy of dealing lotsa damage while being stylish.
Lance is not about style. Lance is about giving a middle finger to whatever the monster throws at you and deliver retribution in simple but effective way. Lance, in and of itself, is a statement. Lance is the go-to choice if you wanna give your hunting targets a poke of death... or a few dozens of it.
I think Guard Up can stay, and I agree on making lance eats less sharpness to be much more effective in dealing damage. What I'd like to give to lance is Insta-block becomes a built-in feature and the counter that comes out of it have multiple versions outside from swipes. Maybe the counter comes with strong thrust or a lunge, idk.
As for me, the premise of being **The Wall** is brilliant, but I like my poke stick comes with a gun attached to it.

Having played the Wilds Demo with Lance I have to say it was absolutely amazing to get the "this attack is going to kill you" - indicators and be the only one in the team not running for their life. That made it feel way more powerful - I even wished for a move that could pull more aggro on me. Maybe that could also be a good addition for the lance in the future?

As someone who used lance on the side quite a bit in world and Gen and mained it in 4 and Rise, the whole draw of the lance is the simplicity of it, the thing that made it fun for me was that I was the Implacable Man in the fight, constantly doing my basic attacks while pulling off perfect guards and keeping up pressure, it was very fun to get the timing down and I really did enjoy the playstyle, I think that simplicity is why a lot of people play lance.
However despite it being honestly a very fun way to play, you're fighting for last place damage wise all the time, and as much as I like the weapon, it's understandable why people will gravitate away from it when there are objectively better weapons to use. I would really like to see it get some deserved attention, especially since the lance was paradoxically the king of the weapons in the older games, making it more in line with the other weapons would be awesome.
Even if it didn't whenever I play MH, Lance is pretty much my go to now, lance bro forever.

6:20 I'd say to give the lance a swipe option after the dashing stab which lets you back or forward step in a direction for reorientation and continued aggression. Also give it a shield bash for safe stun build-up/armor break interrupts. It'd allow you to trade with the monsters when played and kitted properly.

I picked up lance for Sunbreak and the weapon is great for going into a fight blind. You can see which attacks are the strong hits while safely behind the shield. Plus the constant flow of blocking and then counterattacking allows you to better understand the flow for subsequent hunts. An ideal move for knockdowns would be the cherry on the cake

Lance has a lot more going for it that most people miss, especially in rise. For example, twin vines adds 2 levels of guard, as well as instigator, and unlocks a 3rd silkbind move with the hop. Spiral thrust allows you to follow up with two extra hits after the second thrust, the second of which is among your more powerful. It also has a parry at the beginning that provides a 10% damage buff. The most missed thing has existed since world. That's the ability to power guard after guarding an attack that gives knockback. So block an attack, and while your sliding input power guard. You get to respond faster then anyone else with fairly hard hitting moves.
