My barracks was directly across from the Mira Flores locks when I was stationed at Ft. Clayton in Panama 🇵🇦 1980 -1982. We would fly in Chinooks and helicopters to the Atlantic side across Gatun lake to train at Ft. Sherman where the Jungle Operations Training Center was located. I loved it in Panama 🇵🇦 !!!!
Transitted this canal many times during my years at sea. Thankyou very much for this video as it brought back memories. Regardless of history and politics it is one of the engineering wonders of the world without doubt.
Cruise ships get to go during the day, we usually have at least some night passage (and I did not manage to get a nice time lapse with that) but very, very cool video.

That's the purpose of the canal, to move the ship from sea level up to the mountain portion then release it again on the other side of the mountain where you may observe that the ship is back to the sea level again. It amazing work of men.
@eatabrownie it raise up to the level of gatun lake and then stays at that level all the way to the Pedro Miguel locks on the other side, where it goes back down to sea level (2 sets of locks).
Because creating a sea level canal would require much much more cutting to make the trenches deep enough for ships, and would take many more years of construction, bankrupt the countries paying for construction, deal with more death of works, and just make the project unfeasable. Easier to create an artifical lake above sea level and just raise the ships. Thank you.
The U.S. paid the Panamanians millions of dollars to develop their land, and helped them become a recognized country to their Colombian neighbors. The canal is a large economic benefit to Panama and brings millions of dollars into the country each year. Stepping on peoples backs isn't really an accurate assessment.
id like too hear your views on how the american indian voluntarily migrated west of the Mississippi for the furtherment of America....Lets get it strait...America didnt pay Panamanians millions...they paid millions to build the canal cause it solidified America as a new super power...money was given to politicians to grease the way...the majority of the workers were from the Caribbean and Panama and received half the pay of their european and american counterparts

I'm a 6th grader who's learning about Latin America and we're focusing on the Panama Canal and this video REALLY helped. Thank you.
I think it's a little reckless to drive a ship that fast.
You just made my day! XDXD
This was awesome. We were there in December 2009 - but left the ship at Gatun Lake for an excursion - and didn't get to experience the Lake. Thanks.
Wow! It was really fun to watch the ship go up and down in the locks. Did not know there was so many islands along the canal.
Chuck from "Stuff You Should Know" podcast sent me.
Same

Stuff you should know
This is simply SPECTACULAR, and it's the kind of thing that makes me totally impressed with all the unbelievable things that Engineering can do.
I was learning about this in class, and this was the first time that I looked something up from school on RUclips! I really liked this video, thanks!
That was very cool, thanks. I've been to the Miraflores locks many times but never through the canal. That was a quick easy way to do it!
I liked the bit with the Panama Canal.
Very interesting. Thank you very much / Muy interesante. Muchas gracias.

Θαυμα της μηχανικης!!!!!
it is amazing...
built in 1880-1914 the Panama Canal cost $639,000,000
80,000 people helped construct it and 30,000 of them lost their lives
Using the acronym "HD" for this video is a stretch so long it can travel the Panama canal twice.
☆★☆ FANTASTIC VIDEO ☆★☆
I would like to do that trip right now with the updated photographer equipment.
tumbs up

The music reminds me of Surgeon Simulator.
