I love the C Melody's range especially in the upper range in the higher register. The firmer the reed with a melancholy control would sound amazing. Finding a voice between Art Pepper and Ben Webster or Stan Getz with this instrument would be to die for.
🎶I can only echo James Lackeys comment of January 2014. I think I may have identified my type of C-melody saxophone too. This video confirms what a beautiful tone it has, so thank you.
I've been using alto pieces -- with tenor reeds - on my Wurlitzer C-mel with great sound and intonation all the way through the range. The more open the piece, the better. in my experience.
@instrumentattic Thankyou for the reply. Turns out there was a leak in the lower stack, luckily the tech was able to adjust the existing pad and get it to seal. Now it plays remarkably well... I do intend to get a C-Melody mouthpiece or a better tenor one. Mine is a cheap plastic tenor, but there are just so many to choose from!!! I have heard the morgan and runyon c mel pieces are good, as well as the aquilasax metal 7 one. Bill streets are a little pricey but this recording is amazing.
@saxismyaxe Thanks. That mouthpiece was made by Bill Street of Gorham, Maine. He makes his own C-mel mouthpiece for Conns (and also one with a different chamber for Bueschers) that's matched up right and actually makes the horn play in tune - not to mention the great sound. It blows away all the other pieces I've tried with this horn.
@Raiders969 Hi Raiders. It sounds like your horn may have some leaky pads - have you checked it (or had it checked) to see if everything's sealing? It could just need a bit of adjustment. My tenor mouthpieces worked ok on this horn, but it was just way out of tune and had an "unnatural" sound to it until I found the right c-mel piece.
I love how it's acapella, but wonder how it was sounding against the tuner... Looking at one of similar Conns now and doing my home work. Thank you for beautiful playing!
hey instrumentattic, I just got a 1920 Conn 8M Chu berry C-Melody as well, but i am using a regular tenor mpc. But from about F down in the lower octave it will jump to the next octave unless i put it further in my mouth to relieve the pressure on the reed and blow like the dickens! and it gets loud! how do you play in the lower octave so consistently without it jumping... do you think it could be my mouthpiece choice?
I have a Conn 8M C melody 1926. Straight neck. Have 2 original c melody mouthpieces, but it sounds muffled with them. Maybe just need to use a harder reed than a 2. But read the original C melody mouthpieces really are too muting on a C melody - compared to the sound of alto or tenor saxes Just ordered a Meyer 6L C melody mouthpiece, based on the information and reviews. Hope this mouthpiece frees up this beautiful sax - and me to play it better as an amateur. 👍☦️
@instrumentattic Some c melody players say the vintage selmer jazz is the best, others the brilheart level aire, or the otto link 7. Some c melody players swear by various alto mouthpieces, abeit not as many as tenor ones. Its overwhelming how many choices there are for a c melody player. Anyways, nice playing and thankyou. Keep on playin that C Melody!
Gorgeous! Great in full voice, and excellent subtone as well. I have a 1922 NW series 1C-mel (curved neck) and I've been messing around with some standards as well - it's great to be able to read directly off c fakebooks! What's your setup? I'm getting a tone very similar to yours using a new Aquilasax metal widebody c-mel piece with Maccaferri "My Masterpiece" vintage reeds, which gives a nice dark tone but with enough bite and bark to project.
@JeremyOwnzAll I got the mouthpiece directly from Bill Street (207-839-2231). I can't remember the cost, but it was well worth however much it was. It's made to work with standard tenor reeds. I'm using Rico 3.5.
I had a Beuscher C Melody, silver plated with a tenor curve to the crook. Got it for 50 pounds from a guy who got it cheap but didn't want it. It needed repadding & respringing which I did myself (it wouldn't made it worse!), but the sound never popped from the bell like yours. I sold it for 250 to a lady who wanted to read over the shoulder of a piano player. She had it done up professionally, played it for some years, in the end selling it for 600 pounds. Wish I still had it, really...

one of the most beautiful renditions of this classic tune I've ever heard, thank you!
Thank you. I have a 1921 Conn C. Nice horns!
Nice
I adore ❤️😍 YOUR sound and treatment of the song on the C-melody.

I didn't even realize they had m series c Melody. Sounds insanely good

Many C Mel players now are using a Rico Metalite tenor mouthpiece. Needs to be pushed pretty far onto the cork, but can sound great.

Sorry, just saw the post about your mpc. Anyway, sounds great!

gonna just sample this real quick. don't mind me.
how'd the completed song turn out? (just sampled too :P)
you know what they say. great minds think the same.
You got what it takes to make this baby sing. Great job. Nice sax. Is it for sale and do you gig in NYC.
Sweet.

which goes to show....they sound awesome "once" they are leak free, but it takes a skilled hand to get it there.
This is pretty old, but where could I find sheet music for this, is it in the real book
Nice job. What mouthpiece have you elected to use with your C-Melody?
2:08 oh yeahhh
Nice! I have a C-melody too and can play this but no where near as good as you lol
Agreed... I use a Jody Jazz HR tenor mpc on my Wurlitzer c-melody with good results. Alto mpcs won't fit on its cork currently. /watch?v=XyILGgwpPdg
what kind of reed do you use
Smooth as a baby's bum
Is this still on sell?
