It’s nice to see a reactor who knows his way around string instruments. After reacting to this video you should do PTX’s live performance video of Kiss From A Rose.
As everyone said, the live VEVO Studio performance of Kiss From a Rose is a must, plus Kevin’s Fifth, live, and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Reimagined, live, are also must sees. He samples a recording of the band’s song that you just heard adding his own layered strings, plus live celloboxing with Matt joining him on drums. It’s craziness! Kevin does have his own YT channel, KO Kevin Olusola and there are several pieces available on that. Kevin's original plan ( other than playing cello, beatboxing and playing sax) was to become a doctor and work in China. To that end he learned Mandarin and several other languages, applied to Yale's Pre-Med studies and was accepted, did the courses and was about to write finals when Scott contacted him about playing with them. Kevin explained that although he'd consider joining the group for the audition at least, he was kinda busy at the moment. A couple of weeks later, Kevin contacted Scott after graduating and decided to join them for the show. Well....they won and didn't stop since, even though Sony reneged on the recording contract and left them high ad dry in California. They decided to build their own fame and used YT to post their videos of their singing. It worked!! It's really amazing and very rare that a person is so talented in so many areas that they can choose from several paths to set their life on. Kevin was lucky enough to have a chance at a complete and successful change in life goals and actually chose a great path to follow. One that we all get to enjoy as well. It's great to see a reactor to Kevin's work who actually is familiar with cellos and other stringed instruments. Thank you for the fun and informative reaction. I'm hoping there'll be many more PTX vids!! The ones with Kevin doing his thing on the cello: Say Something, Perfect, Radioactive( feat. Lindsey Stirling), Over The River ( feat. Lindsey Stirling), Papaoutai ( feat. Lindsey Stirling), Thank You (original), Dancing On My Own, Shallow.
Thanks for all the info! He is such an incredible artist! Wow! Crazy that he was going to become a doctor. Selfishly, I’m glad he went the musical route! Phenomenal!
Kiss From a Rose is only a few months old, and Kevin plays his electric cello in two different modes. Say Something is (I believe) the first PTX video where Kevin played the cello with the group. Dancing On My Own is a video that was done after Avi announced his departure, but before he actually left, and it's just the 4 of them - Kevin, Scott, Mitch, and Kirstin. Kevin plays the cello, and it's easy to imagine that the line he plays on it could easily be the bass line that Avi would be singing if he were there.
@@st4rpt_603 It's Kevin's eyes that get me, every time I watch that video. Here he is playing his cello, beatboxing at the same time, and he looks as if he might burst into tears at any minute. I'm not sure how he held it together. I wonder how many takes they needed.
Kevin was actually the first member of the group to release a side-project EP, “Renegade,” in 2015. It charted at #1 on one of Billboard’s instrumental classical music charts. The main song from that album was the title track, with a beautiful music video. He later had another EP with two friends-they called the group Triptyq, and their music was a bit jazzy in style. I really like their song “When I Fall,” (which has a video) which has Kevin singing as a duet with the group’s lead singer and rapping as well as playing cello and beatboxing. His rap there is actually personal, referring to the stress of Pentatonix’s success.
Kevin's cello in their video of " Say Something" is amazing. It sounds like the cello is saying the words to the song. Also, Kevin has a video called " Renegade" which is a piece that he wrote and performs in a desert setting . If this blew you away, Renegade will send you to the moon.
This video was how Kirstie, Scott, and Mitch found him and asked him to be on the Sing-Off. When he recorded this he was at Yale studying for his premed degree.
Thank you for the great reaction to Kevin's video. That was a very early one. He's a pretty awesome musician and entertainer. He is an even more awesome human. He has his own RUclips channel and IMO everything on it is amazing. I look forward to more reactions to Kevin's and/or Pentatonix videos.
Kevin is one of those people whose brain has 17 different sections, each of which can operate either independently or in harmony with the whole. Kevin has been playing cello since he was 6 or 8 years old, so it's all second nature to him, but it all just baffles me with amazement.
Kevin began piano lessons at age 4, cello at age 6, and alto saxophone at age 10. Obviously, his parents realized they had a prodigy on their hands at a VERY early age.
@@setonhillstudiosYou aren't the only one late to the party; I didn't discover Pentatonix until September of 2022. That was about six months after my husband killed himself; I REALLY wish I'd been able to share Pentatonix with him.
Yes, this is the video the trio saw when they were looking for a beatboxer. The piece is named "Julie-O." It was written by Mark Summer, who is part of the Turtle Island Quartet. We didn't come up with "KO" to describe Kevin's effect on us all by ourselves; we actually borrowed it from Kevin. Kevin and Avi Kaplan became fast friends when they were brought in to PTX. Avi had written a song and asked Kevin if he would play the cello in the recording. Kevin agreed and they set up a time to meet at the studio. Kevin thought they would go over how Avi wanted it to sound. When Avi arrived, he handed Kevin his already scored for cello piece exactly the way he wanted it to sound with his song. They produced a beautiful musical video and Kevin had to do some string adjusting to make his cello to go as deeply as Avi's voice. Here is the video. What’s really insane is that this is so old that I forgot how far he’s come. Yes, he’s classically trained and was always amazing but he is so much better now that is a little difficult to listen to.😂
The cello piece is called "Julie-O", by cellist Mark Summer of the Turtle Island String Quartet. It is famously hard to play, requiring a variety of string techniques, with percussion and pizzicato as well as jazz, country and other fiddle styles. You can find videos of Summer playing it on YT. The beat-boxing is all Kevin. He was studying a year in China when he starting experimenting with cello boxing. At this point he is back at Yale, finishing up his pre-med degree in Asian Studies but is thinking of putting a medical degree on hold and applying to Berklee College of Music to continue
True colors and Down covers by Kevin are also FIRE🔥🔥🔥i just thought I'd mention those 2 because everyone else is recommending Kevin's Fifth, lol. Kevin's Fifth is fantastic, but honestly I prefer his cover of Marian Hill's Down most....it jams.hope you get to check them out,can if just on your own time.🎶❤✌
For more celloboxing, several people have already recommended "The Kevin Show/Kevin's Fifth," and Kevin celloboxes in most of the KOvers on his personal channel: youtube.com/@kolusola Additionally, this is a partial list of PTX songs that include celloboxing: "Dancing On My Own" "Radioactive" (featuring Lindsey Stirling) "Thank You" "Kiss From A Rose" (preferably the live Vevo performance)
@@setonhillstudios Any time. Kevin is an awesome person, a true polymath. Polymaths are the people mere geniuses look at and say, "Wow! I wish I had a mind that good." Leonardo da Vinci was a polymath, as were Isaac Asimov and Richard Feynman. After Pentatonix won _The Sing-Off_ and then lost the contract with Epic, the contract that had been their whole reason for going on _The Sing-Off_ in the first place, Kevin had options. He'd already completed his pre-med major, and had been accepted to Yale Medical School; I'm sure he could still have gone back and become a surgeon as he first intended. But he didn't. If he had it would have been the end of Pentatonix; he was essential if they were to build their win of _The Sing-Off_ into an actual career. Kevin gave up the chance to become a surgeon in order to stick with his band through the lean years, with no guarantees that they would succeed. That's true integrity. Anything I can do to increase his fan base I'm pleased to do.
Yes, this is the right video. And just think, he’s 13 years better at it now! I’m subscribing for more PTX and KO. And btw, his surname is pronounced with the accent on the second syllable, ‘o LUS ola’.
Kevin is an amazing musician. That's what Scott Hoying and Ben Bram saw in this video that made them really want to have him for Pentatonix. It wasn't just that he was a good beat boxer, it was that he was a great musician. He also plays sax. A fun (and equally mind-blowing) watch is from when he appeared on the PBS program "From the Top: Live from Carnegie Hall" when he was 17, playing saxophone, and did a short beat box also ruclips.net/video/cg-WQl3YCVY/видео.html.
Kevin has his own RUclips channel, Kevin Olusola -- KO, where he has a variety of musical experiments. Cello pieces, classical and pop arrangements, solo and with other musicians. Also celloboxing, live looping, singing, etc. and some autobiographical videos. One of my favorites is his arrangement of Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" -- ruclips.net/video/nyYG70aM9Fw/видео.html
Kevin's interpretation of Julie-O does NOT end that abruptly - and the finish is worth finding. See "Kevin Olusola - "Julie-O" Spaulding Sessions" I don't know where you found the one you first saw - correct performance of PTX introduction, but incomplete as first uploaded.

At this point he is back at Yale, finishing up his pre-med degree in Asian Studies but is thinking of putting a medical degree on hold and applying to Berklee College of Music to continue
Awesome, thanks for all the info and backstory!
Btw he was premed at Yale when he started celloboxing
That’s wild! Glad he chose to go the music route though!
True colors and Down covers by Kevin are also FIRE🔥🔥🔥i just thought I'd mention those 2 because everyone else is recommending Kevin's Fifth, lol. Kevin's Fifth is fantastic, but honestly I prefer his cover of Marian Hill's Down most....it jams.hope you get to check them out,can if just on your own time.🎶❤✌
Awesome, thanks for the suggestions!
Definitely check out DOWN and Sign of the Times..Kevin just playing in his studio LOL
He sings. too! Perfect pitch. You should react to his cover of Down.
What can’t this man do?! 🤣 Unreal! Thanks for the suggestion!
For more celloboxing, several people have already recommended "The Kevin Show/Kevin's Fifth," and Kevin celloboxes in most of the KOvers on his personal channel: youtube.com/@kolusola
Additionally, this is a partial list of PTX songs that include celloboxing:
"Dancing On My Own"
"Radioactive" (featuring Lindsey Stirling)
"Thank You"
"Kiss From A Rose" (preferably the live Vevo performance)
Awesome, thanks for the suggestions!
Gotcha, thanks for the heads up I’m terrible with pronunciations 🤣
Please check ‘I am giving up on you’ by Pentatonix
Kevin is an amazing musician. That's what Scott Hoying and Ben Bram saw in this video that made them really want to have him for Pentatonix. It wasn't just that he was a good beat boxer, it was that he was a great musician. He also plays sax. A fun (and equally mind-blowing) watch is from when he appeared on the PBS program "From the Top: Live from Carnegie Hall" when he was 17, playing saxophone, and did a short beat box also ruclips.net/video/cg-WQl3YCVY/видео.html.
Awesome, thanks for that link!
I recommend his video renegade
Appreciate the suggestion! 😁
@@setonhillstudios, it really is incredible.
Awesome! Thanks for the info and suggestion!
Ah ok, I’ll have to look around and try to find the original then!
Check out Kevin's Fifth for more and newer content.
Awesome, thanks for the heads up!
"The Kevin Show" - LIVE: ruclips.net/video/DbCasvcNx78/видео.html
Thanks for the suggestion!
I you really want to hear KO go off, try his version of "Down" - way better than this one.
Awesome, thanks for the suggestion!
He cello-boxes in two of my favorites: 'Say Something', and 'A Kiss From A Rose'. Highly recommend both! Shallow is another good one.
Good to know!
