I know, I love it too! I've been a fan for years but not a FAN (if you know what I mean!) until a few years ago, so when I discovered Hunky Dory and especially this song my mind was blown! Couldn't believe I'd never listened to it before.
robin2012ism , Mr Bowie was bisexual when young, not homosexual like me. His bisexuality gave him great insight into his psyche, tremendous song writing ability, and a lot of sexual songs both of heterosexual and homosexual subject matter, that helped liberate my generation. What a guy! We were so blessed to have him here on earth. sttgaegoaktd
I say ditto to your every word. It's like you took them straight from my heart & tongue. I miss him daily and reminisce by listening to his pure music ... What a treasure he was to this world & it shines a lot less with him gone.

Lived in Brixton when I was younger and saw a tobacconists called 'Bewlay Brothers' - I thought - wow - wish I'd gone in but I was on a lunch-break and didn't smoke. It lives in my imagination.
Hi. I read that Bowie took the name of the song from that tobacconist - not sure if it was one shop or a chain. He said he didn't want to name it after himself and his brother because the sing was about more than that.
Well never see another artist capable of such diverse talent. What a perfect human being this star man was. Hope he's rocking on Mars now with the spiders. My hero for all of my life.
Sleep easy Mr B we will sadly never see the likes of this master of music again and such a funny lovely fella too heaven is a very lucky place to have you mate hopefully catch up with you in the stars 🙏✌️💙😊
Bowie had a loose leaf folder with the song lyrics printed out. He said if he had it with him, he could remember the words (mostly) without looking, but if he forgot it, he'd forget the lyrics! He was so awesome. 💔💔💔💔💔
Bowies music was ethereal and angelic and mad and beautiful and poignant and and and... I miss him daily and love him eternally. Since 5th grade when I was first introduced to his music, then to everything else he's done. He changed my life. Like I know he did for millions. He's more then just an icon. I got to see him in concert but can't wait to meet him on the other side. 😁💛
Day after day they send my friends away to mansions cold and grey, to the far side of town where the thin men walk the streets whilst the sane stay underground... RIP friend David, see you again amen
Ye, his sweet brother Terry did commit the act. I also always thought this was about Terry and David. Sad. Thanks for this...really. Bless, Dr.J.J. Toronto
... he was a geniune STORYTELLER .... that for me was he´s most gifted asset .... back when in my country we had no accest to concerts ...videos ...nothing ...except to listen to his stories in genuine vinyl .... i found it so cool .... nowadays all is so coorporate handled ....
I’ve been enthralled, haunted by The Bewlay Brothers for almost 50 years, and this singular live performance is so indescribably brilliant it brought a tear to my eyes. What a priceless gift to us all! ⚡️
In all the major moments and changes in my life from the first time I heard Diamond Dogs, I was about 8 years old, to the day of the passing of my loved ones, David....you gave me memories in the music you wrote and sang. Now I am 55, even this reminds me of the teenage years, being a rebel, living 5 years and still, the music lives.
I only heard the chair squeak tonight! Thinking about my little brother... an how I can't tell him how much I love him... because it would get all teary, and it's the last thing he needs!!!
This is a very good version.....-thanks. Hunky dory (whatever that means), was the first bowie-record I bought....-always remember that in the beginning of this song, you can hear a chair (which he sat on while recording this?) makes a little sound...yea.
My little brother is going through chemo right now. IT should be me. Me and him and our other bruv, invented a fictional motorcycle club, The Bully Brothers. As a family we've been listening to Hunky Dory for nearly 40 fucking years! Our fictional MC is now the Bewlay Brothers MC. The Solid Book we wrote cannot be found today...
Been a fan of bowie for 40 years now. After everything and everyone, I can't quite make up my mind which is Bowie's best song. It has always been between Bewlay brothers and Moonage Daydream............
..At the start of Bewley Bros you mean?....Ya, you also hear him dial a phone number and take a drag from his cigarette....(Hunky Dory means everything's alright).....
It was an awesome concert...my first ever Bowie concert.the one at the Apollo Hammersmith. I was on the balcony..I have some pics and I think a video but not of this song. I met other bowienutters and it was wonderful! The people in line with me for the one off gig had been at the last concert he had performed there which was when he broke up the band at the end of the Spiders From Mars tour...sigh. I do love Bowie immensely and this song was just..interesting and lovely lyrically.
@BOWIEGIRL30 He always said his brother Terry was a kind of ghost like figure in his life. He cares for him deeply but never knew him very well. If I remember correctly he was in the army when Bowie was young, so their meetings were sporadic, then of course Bowie hit the big time and his brother tragically yielded to schizophrenia. I don't think I've done anything to ease your pain, have I? That reads as very tragic in itself!!!
The song drew its name from a pipe called a Bewley Pipe, it was made of clay and smoked...stuff.The night this was recorded David may have part taken of the pipe...it was where the song got it's name.. One of Davids most amazing songs. Now who was on teh phone at the end of 'life on mars?'. My guess it was Angie... ' your dinners ready luvvy' Servoboy..
Thanks for uploading this, very nice song! I really like it... I too prefer the studio version: the 70's sound, the spoken voice overdubbed on top of Bowie's singing (fucking cool effect, almost freaky!), the chorused guitar, the processed vocals at the end, the fact that the original is pitched higher... Everything sounds better. :) Oh, and Bowie's voice, of course - it's not bad here but it was much better 31 years earlier.
This song is the highlight of the whole Hunky Dory album. This and "Quicksand".
I know, I love it too! I've been a fan for years but not a FAN (if you know what I mean!) until a few years ago, so when I discovered Hunky Dory and especially this song my mind was blown! Couldn't believe I'd never listened to it before.
Haha amen!
In my opinion those two and Life On Mars
David Bowie, you blew my mind my entire life, now in death you've broken my heart. Long live the King.
+Andy Trullinger God can I ever second that. Will always miss him till my time comes.
beause of this song and LP, let's call him The Queen!

I love how, despite having never played it live before, the audience knows exactly which song it is as soon they begin playing.
Me too!
they heard it on the album
@@MrIMBECILE1 Hunky Dory My 1st LP 1972 bought it, never lost the love! We were so turned on!
this song is locked in an eternal death struggle with Rock n Roll Suicide for the title of 'my fav Bowie track'... i love it sooo much..
Same here!
I'm with you on both of those! (Wow, I just noticed you wrote that 7 years ago!)
Love the comment and so true

Actually.. itsvfrom when he went to HULL where the spiders are from.. it was a tabbaco emporium with paraphernalia etc.. not in Brixton at all..

This song breaks my heart.
He truly left a whole lot of excellent stuff, still to be discovered by younger generations.
A very talented musician with humour and heart.
"With humor and heart" - very well said!
Phenomenal lyrics and a great performance. I doubt we will ever see his like again
David was asked many years ago what the song meant. He said "Star Trek in a leather jacket".
DavidTransformer we won’t.end of story.
Beethoven , Elvis , Bowie . That's it .
He's so damn cool, he's very funny too.

this song made me cry hard the minute it started. God, David!
72' I was lying on my bed, the room was dark and I had this album on. Where does the time go?
How I wish I'd been there - I LOVE this song! He's so charming as well - I love his introduction.
wish he had done this song more often it's amazing
Very brilliantly done by Bowie. I have always loved this song. It is great to hear him do it live.
I'll bet there's a lot of Mick Ronson in the arrangement, too ...
My favourite Hunky Dory's song. After almost 40 years Bowie still sounds like Bowie. Incredible and sublime!

Great to hear live. But the dark sicko version on Hunky Dory has the charm.
David is brilliant in this song!
Hunky Dory is My favourite of David's albums... It always feels young... This song is so full of fun as well.

along with the song and "After all"

I've always wondered why he never sang this live, I mean, imagine Hunky Dory without it.
Happy Birthday David, we need you!

Si es mucha letra, pero toda genial, y en uno de sus mejores discos Hunky Dory. Muchas GRACIAS, DAVID, sigo llorándote.
Has he really ever done anything wrong? what a great guy and truly talented musician!!!

It was actually a random call from no one in particular. Mick Ronson was recording and it made him mad, so he started cussing.
still hard to believe he's gone. dammit.
Great!
I can't believe I just found out about this. Standout track from Hunky Dory.
A couple of previous posters are correct - the song is about Bowie and his half brother, Terry.

tantos años perdidos sin tocarla en vivo :c
This is the hook that bowie caught me with......
A gentleman ♥️
