Thanks Pat, I’ve been thumbing the idea around to add windows for added light. I’m so doing this. I was concerned how to finish the outside. I like the caulk to seal it but I think I’ll shop some thin quarter round pvc molding and miter it around the windows gluing it maybe with same caulking. 👍🏼👍🏼
Hell yeah! This is exactly what I need for my garage! So stoked to do this. Great video you two, and Pat handy as always!
thanks!!
Always so handy! I am going to look up your parallettes video soon!
heck ya! thanks!
Ohh this is such a great idea! Great handiwork, Pat!
I can't recommend it enough! thanks!!
Way to go Patrick. You two are great, alway contributing to the fitness community. Thank you.
thanks!!
Hi Pat. Thanks for the great idea! I have two doors, 9' wide so I made four wooden rectangular frames primed and painted for the outside. I used pop rivets to secure the wood picture frames to the outside (from the inside, and the heads will be glued under the glass), drilling into the thick part of the casing 3/8" deep with a collar on a drill bit. 6 pop rivets for each frame, 2 top & bottom and one on each side. The wood frame is 3/8" smaller inside than the hole in the door. This way, when I silicone the glass in place with a 1/2" bead at the wood/steel innerface, silicone came out and sealed the bare steel & bonded to the wood frame as well. Glass has gone up quite a bit since 2020, like everything else. $160 for 4 glass panels; 1/8x16x46 in my situation to cover 8 window openings & 8 $10 smooth door casings for the outside case. Silicone x 2 and paint and primer. All in, $330 in Nov-23 to create 8 windows 13x19 for less than $42 each. Thanks again! It came out beautifully.
Definitely doing this when Spring comes around! Awesome!
Buen video, justo lo que estaba buscando! Gracias por la idea.👍
Looks great!!! Nice job Pat!! Love the mirror finish😊
thanks!!
Fitness and DIY projects in one channel great deal, great work Pat.
thanks!!
Thank you so much for the post. I was looking for a cheap way to do my garage
Great stuff Pat! Thanks.
Awesome! Exactly what I was searching for ❤
This is an awesome idea (and all kinds of finishing touches could be added fairly easily for those naysayers). Been trying to figure out a practical way to get natural light in our garage. What type of adhesive did you use for the glass, and did you use tempered glass?
NOOOO! NO!
That glass is not tempered. That adhesive probably won’t hold forever. If/when that glue lets go from all the heat and vibration, and the weight of the glass hanging when door is open, it will fall out on your heads! When it breaks, regular glass is sharp like razors! Tempered glass breaks into little pieces that don’t cut you. This is not only completely unsafe, it is also totally illegal by building code.
yes indeed, those thin metal doors flex, and his choice of any kind of glass is worrisome....also coat it first and WEAR GOOD LEATHER GLOVES and eye protection when handling any plate glass product...
hey, its been more than a year and hundreds of open and closes and it has worked great and without an single issue!
@@patrickoconnell2380 Not yet.
I agree as soon as door twist sideways or uneven it will break
@@22eagleone its been up for 2 years and havent had an issue yet!
That is so AWESOME that you were able to make your garage gym into a sun room. I didn't think you could make a garage gym into a sun room. You did a WONDERFUL job making your garage gym into a sun room. Keep up the handy work & PLEASE share more videos like this.
thanks! and we have a couple more coming!
@@patrickoconnell2380 My pleasure. Nice!
So glad i found ur video. Miney saving for sure! Cheaper than a sky light! Tha k you!!
I was watching this and I wasn't really digging it, but as you put on the finishing touches, it turned out great. Outstanding solution. Good work.
Thanks! its working great
Thank you for this video. It is exactly what I needed
Thank you for the idea! I would not go with glass, but have 1/4 inch thick pieces of plexiglass cut (CA has TAP Plastics or order it online). Then I can safely glue AND bolt it onto the garage door. This would also prevent someone from breaking in. I'll also insulate around the outside & inside along the edges to keep water from leaking in, since my garage door gets hit hard by rain.
I'D RECOMMEND STAYING AWAY FROM THE BOLTS. IF YOU GET INTO BOLTING PLEXIGLASS PANELS
(EVEN SMALLER BOLTS) YOU RUN A RISK OF CAUSING THE GARAGE DOOR TO BUCKLE,AND OR CRACKING THE PLEXIGLASS. A GOOD SILICONE ADHESIVE SHOULD BE PLENTY STRONG ENOUGH. JUST MY TWO CENTS.
This is awesome; I will decently be doing this! Thank you.
heck ya! !!
Great video. Its something I've been contemplating for years. No need to buy a window segment from the garage manufacturer which is a complete rip-off. I have to come-up with another solution since my garage door have no squares, just gawdy horizontal lines. I think a thicker 3/16" (4.76 mm) plexiglass is the best since its light and glues well - it just scratches easily but its safer. Using glass is risky since its heavy and can fall due to a breach in the glue adhesion over time, temperature changes, vibration, and moisture. I would cold weld (JB Weld) metal corner brackets to a metal garage door to secure these windows. Or if wood garage paneling, I would drill mounting holes on the metal corners and use wood screws. Thanks again for the great video !!
Thanks Pat for keeping the vlogs comming while Kristi is out of town. You're one handy dude, where did you lean your DIY skills?
haha thanks, I spent about 12 years flipping houses, doing ground up builds, up and built a few log cabins !
I find myself watching more of your content because of the mix. Keep it up, without losing focus. (fine line but you got this!)
thank! we love the feedback!
That was great! A garage door with windows is soooo.... expensive. This looks like something I could definitely do. Thanks for showing us how to do it!
you are awesome....you gave me a great idea to do my garage door...thank you young man
Love the white duct tape solution. Very simple and smart in context
Awesome! Anything special about the R-Tech insulation? Is just just rolls of fiberglass? I need to do the same thing? How is it adhered to the garage so it doesn’t fall out? Thx!!
Great idea!! Thanks for sharing
Great idea! I may do this! Could you put the mirror tint on the glass before you glue it to the door? Might be a little easier.
ya actually, I don't see why not!
Excellent idea. Congrats.
You’re the man Pat!! 👍
thanks hahah!!
This was really cool!
thanks!!
Great result 👏😀
A take away for me from this is to do the tinting before the glass is glued to the garage door. Thanks for this idea.
hahah for sure! learned that the hard way on this one.
Hmm 🤔 yes that does seem like a simpler way but, isn't there a possibility of scratching or ripping the tint during the glass installation. Or worse yet getting some of the excess sealant on the tint which would probably be harder to clean off than the bare glass?
Hey man great video. Can you please tell me, what measurements you used for the section of glass? I have the same garage door as you. Thanks in advance
Great tutorial, thanks!
Nicely done!
Nice! I have been trying to make a decision on the insulating my garage door also. So you decided to buy the sheets and cut them yourself? I have seen so many options on Amazon
yup, we have a vid coming out about that too, along with the garage heater I installed!
Excellent idea for an upgrade on a budget. Just curious as to how the modification would hold up to hurricane force winds in Florida for example. 🤔
Glen Butler we love having them, but it would prob be with beefing up the glass!!
Thank you for showing this to all of us! I wanted to just add what looks like a rounded top carriage house window to my garage door which is wood not metal and make the door look like it is two doors with handles that open them. I thought surely someone would have faux windows that you could just screw on to the doors but I was wrong. What I have found are a lot of magnet faux windows but I am still looking for that screw on fake. If nothing else I guess I could paint the faux windows and add low profile framing around them but I was just hoping to find something quick. Another thing I wondered about on my door is that it is already heavy and I don't want to add a lot of weight to the door and unfortunately there is a massive beam inside that prevents me from changing out my door to a lightweight roll up door as there is not clearance. If anyone finds what I am looking for would you please let me know in a reply.
Job well done Pat
thanks!!
Great job 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Cool weekend project 😁
Your a badass thanks for helping my idea come to life. Just didn’t know if it was possible until you showed how it’s done! I didn’t want to spend 4000k just for a garage already made with glass! Keep up the good work man!
Nice video you should do series of doing bench mark wods
we can def do that!!
Man…that’s real creative option. I talked to garage door company and they would change those panels for as much as the door cost. That is a no go! Thanks for the great video and creative option!
Any suggestions for someone with insulated garage doors. I have a mini split in my garage/gym space, so not creating a huge thermal loss area during the hottest and coldest days would be ideal, but I really don't think single paned glass is going to do a good job insulating!
We have a video coming up soon on heating and insulating! the glass isn't a good thermal barrier but the sunlight it lets in, helps warm more than it hurts!
Any consideration for putting some sort of extra support on inside of edge of windows? Like a piece of trim or something along edge? Having them only glued in makes me sorta nervous....
they are glued flat to flat as well as run around the outside edge like calking in a piece of trim. the door is only 1/8 metal so i dont have a great way to attach trim, but i have removed many mirrors that were glued to wall and that challenge gave me confidence! lol
I cannot find that type of sealant adhesive that you mentioned. Could you recommend any other one?
Been considering this with ours because we need more light in the garage gym when the door is closed
I can't recommend it enough, it awesome!!
Very nice 👍 why didn’t you tint the window before you installed it ?
it was my first time and I learned the hard way that i should have lol!! if i did it again i definatly would!
Hey Pat! Is you privacy film good for daytime & night time ? What's the brand of privacy film you used ?
hey! yes it does work both daytime and night time. I got it from Home Depot, but it looks like you can get it cheaper on amazon. and from what I could tell the brand didnt matter to much!
Kristi see what happens when you let Pat control your channel, it turns into Tool Time lol
😂😂😂
hahahah for sure !!!😂
That is AWESOME!
Have tried opening and closing the garage door after your mod? I’d be worried the glass might break if there is any twisting going on during this.
ya, its not an issue at all. its 1/8 think and with the glue Im not worried a bit!
Hey, just an update its been more than a year and hundreds of open and closes and no issues at all!
@@patrickoconnell2380 glad to hear it. The sun light must be awesome. Especially during Ohio winters.
This is technically illegal in some states. You're supposed to use temperred glass. It costs more but worth it. If you disengage the electric door opener for any reason (Like a power outage) and the door hits the ground hard enough (like if a teenager closes it) cheap glass can break. Otherwise with this one upgrade you at least get a little more peace of mind.
Hey man - I'm calling local glass shops to get 45x17 inch pieces of glass and they are waay more expensive than what you mentioned you got yours for ($18). Can you please provide where you bought your glass from?
Im pretty sure he got them from lowes
Great job
Curious to know what the R-Tech panels are for? Noise or insulation perhaps? Thanks
insulation! we have a video coming soon going over the insulation and the heater I installed!
Can you do diy freestanding pull up bar
Is that an angel grinder? What size blade? Is your door aluminum?
You should do the window tint film first on a flat surface will save you a lot of work and on the exterior of the door you can put window weather strip 😉
haha learned that the hard way, would give myself the same advice now lol
John Cena working some DIY 👌🏾 Nice vid!
I’d drill a 3/8 hole at the corners and cut between the holes of each opening to help prevent flex cracks in the metal. It may not crack but might. Nicely done!
Pat, you gonna caulk the glass from the outside so water/debris can't get down in the cracks between the door and the glass?
Great idea, btw. Clean.
yes! I used a silicone on the outside !!
@@patrickoconnell2380 Awesome. I hope to see more home DIY stuff - that and Crossfit are my jam. you guys are getting all of my attention!
8:42 he talks about it here
dope!
I live in Florida, and have hurricane rated doors. Will this mod compromise the structural integrity of the door?
It depends what the door is made of, and how large the patterns and pillars between them are. I would say if yours is metal like the one in the video, or plastic then it will. Since they are very thin.
instead of mirror tint you can use a frosted effect instead that way people cant see in and it doesn't block sun light.
People can't see in with mirrored.
Great idea, but I probably would stick to plexiglass. If that garage door slams to the ground for some reason, that glass is going bye-bye
What did you do to make it open easy?
Thanks!
How did these hold up? Any damage with regular use of the garage door?
Perfect. its been a few years and we have not had a single issue!
Scary is the first word that comes to mind. He said mirrors are glued to walls. His glass is moving over peoples heads. In addition, the metal expands and contracts with the weather.
Good luck!
its been more than a year and hundreds of open and closes and not a single issue!
How is it now
I would tint prior to installing the glass
Thanks
Nice one bro. Do you leave in HOA ? Need to know if I need permission to put this . Thanks
Jhong Manila I do.. but I’ll be honest, I didn’t ask 🤷🏻♂️😂
It depends on the HOA, my HOA is super anal so I would have to get permission before doing something like this for sure.
But does the door still have its stability?
What adhesive did you use?
Instead of put tape on the inside of the garage door glass install strips if insulation between the glass and the door framing
Any long term issues with the glass cracking?
not a single issue yet!
What happens if Someone throws a rock through one piece of that glass How do you repair it
Lol you replace the piece of glass.... but we also don’t live in the ghetto so that isn’t a problem.
Very nice.
I'm totally doing this to my. Doors even though it will lose some insulation
Great work. Get a super bright light directly above the garage door. It’s a deterrent and makes it so that it’s more difficult to look in. Especially at night. Tint works like a two way mirror.
thanks!!
Pat is so handy!
haha lots of practice lol
Why didn't you tint the windows before you installed them? Probably would have been alot easier...
lol found that out the hard way. if i did it again i would!
What is the reflective tint used?
i just got it from Home Depot, it is reflective window tint!
1/8 tempered glass would work really well and be strong
home come you didnt add trim to the exterior to hide the cutting?
We did end up doing that, it just didnt make it in the video!
@@Kristi-Eramo-OConnellplease update us and let us see
Where did you get the glass from?
just a local hardware store
Excelent 💪👏💪👏
thanks!!
My wife works for a garage door company.. You definitely saved so much money. Lol. I love watching these videos. 💪
Should of put the tint on before you put the windows in!
@@seanbowser331 haha thanks, and ya that was my first time applying a tint and if I was to do it again I would def apply the tint first.
wahoo, that will be very helpful for someone that wants to come and still at the house, you should have made it smaller
come and still at the house??🤷🏻♂️. smaller than what?
Pat always a master 💪🏼🤘🏽
hahah thanks!
Is that regular plate glass or a safety glass?
Richard Fitzwell this was regular glass
@@patrickoconnell2380 FYI.... Should be plexiglass or tempered glass.Someone could get injured if and/or when it breaks.
A true DIY master. This job takes it to a whole new level. And when someday you sell the house and the new owners are scratching their heads over duck taped garage windows you can just show them this video. I vote for a new intro roll that includes more Pat doing DIY.
hahah thanks!!!
Also a Hack Master
A DIY master would have cut out the raised area only. Then make a double sided frame from vinyl molding. You don’t need to glue the glass…screw the frames together so it holds in place. Then there is no need for duct tape. This project was sort of ghetto.
Pat, you mentioned winter coming and the garage door staying shut in the gym! I'm in Kentucky, so our winter's are similar, we need a tips/ways of insulating/heating the garage gym during the winter?!
we have that video coming!!!
Great question. I’m in Canada, and have insulated the garage door, but may need to install a 220v 5000 watt electric heater to my panel. It’s gonna be a cold long winter.
I need that hat!
I can't recommend it enough!!
This is genius !!!!
can't recommend it enough!
Smart dude
