Installing Docker & Portainer with new OMV-Extras (June 2023)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 25 июл 2024
- It looks like OMV-Extras has removed Docker, Portainer, and Yacht from their setup in order to push people to start using OMV's new built-in Docker container management solution.
I've had a few people reach out to me about this recently, so I made this video to help people install Docker and Portainer with the new OMV-Extras plugin as a foundation.
Below you'll find additional resources for the video.
INSTALL OMV-EXTRAS - SSH in and run the command on this page:
wiki.omv-extras.org/
INSTALL DOCKER
Enable Docker Repo in omv-extras
Go to Plugins and install openmediavault-compose
Go to Services
Click Compose
Click Settings
Click "Reinstall Docker"
INSTALL PORTAINER
SSH into your OMV server and run:
docker run -d -p 8000:8000 -p 9443:9443 --name portainer --restart=always -v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock -v portainer_data:/data portainer/portainer-ce:latest

DB, I enjoy watching these tech videos. I really do appreciate you making them. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for watching!! :)
it SUUUUUCKS as one of only 2 ppl in the omv room that ever actually gives help i HATE HATE HATE this new update. your asking ppl that are having issue knowing what a ip is or how to ssh to use a stack command just make it point and click man. i tried speaking to the makers or having the mods do it but no go. the room is rather toxic im looking for a new host as it is right now this thing has just got to janky for me that or i will go back to using omv5 before all the stupid started.
im glad SOMEBODY made a video on this as i have had 1000+ ppl with issues as of late it seems.
@@TwinTailTerror totally agree with you... by the way, how can we install OMV 5 via ssh and not OMV 6?
@@khalillemkecher sorry for the slow reply well to install 5 you would need a old copy of the iso if you use ssh and pull its gonna be 6 or even 7 now they dont keep a backlog like most places you will need a actual plug in for extras thats almost impossible to find i think i have them but no way to get it to you
tho i might have just deleted them cuz 5 was terrible in some spots
OMV has made things overly complicated.
I have now referred to your/this video several times to help remind me of the quickest means to an end result of portainer running on OMV.
Thank you sir
Actually just released a new video as part of a series on OMV 7
@@DBTechYT wonder why me and this fellow got directed to the old one, hopefully there is no major changes that will break things....
@@tylertuthill5121 This video is about OMV6. My new series is about OMV7
Thank you this helped me out loads. I'm a bit of a noob trying to follow older tutorials and getting completely lost
Thank you! this is my first time trying OMV and almost every video and resource had the portrainer + yacth approach.
commenting here for further reach. great vid as usual, this helped me setting up my OMV right now. keep it up!
Thanks for the how-to. I was following install steps for 6.0 and 6.5 requires many extra steps. I appreciate your vids!
Like others,I struggled with these changes.I stumbled along until I found the solution by accident. Good softwaredesign shouldn't be like that. ' If it ain't broken, don't fix it ', Keep I Short & Simple. These cliches still apply! Thanks for the video!
Thank you soo much for this video. One of those omv updates just killed my raspberrypi installation and this video helped me to not lose my mind setting my portainers up again
I just realized there is nothing in omv-extras so I found your video. I'm pleasantly happy they just didn't nuke the docker/portainer/containers I already had running. I think it was fine the way it was. I could just click 'Install Docker' from omv-extras to UPDATE docker.. it was super simple.
Anyway, I was doing all the rest from the CLI and portainer anyway. I think I'll just un-marry docker/portainer from OMV and make a new one on a bigger SBC. Thanks for the info!
Thanks a lot , helped me after installing over 5 hours with other videos . They never worked. Yours did 100% Thank you
I woke up with a broken system, because between updates OMV changed completely omv-extras and all my services were down. I had to go to the OMV forum to find a way to fix my system and the main reason I couldn't make it work was a misleading instruction in the guide that the mod keeps saying is perfectly logic "because I am the only one out of 15 people that whined about it". Another user helped me and I could make it work again. This is NOT the way to develop anything, if something is going to change so much, you must add a BIG info like "Before applying this update please read this [link] or go on at your own risk". Assuming a user will know what happened is very nerdy. This change broke a ton of tutorials on the net, I don't like this behavior at all. Anyway thanks for this video, you keep being precious on this matter.
Interesting, I had everything setup and running before OMV-Extras was changed to the new Docker Compose UI and didn't even notice the switch - Docker and all the containers (Portainer included) continued to run and work as they always had before. It wasn't until I looked in the OMV web interface did I notice the change had hit my system.
Thanks for this tutorial, was fast & clean !!
Thank you for this video! The best and easies way for beginners :) It helped me a lot :)
THANK YOU for this. My Odroid HC2 died after 3 years for no reason, so I bought the HC4 and did a fresh install of everything and was scratching my head as to what happened to Docker and Portainer!
I never understood any of this until your video! THANK YOU!
Thanks bro, I was trying to install this shit and you're the only one that worked
Another excellent video! ive recently rolled back to OMV 5.6.13 USUL as i had so many problems with this new update. I had upgraded from OMV 5 TO 6 using omv-update a good while back and it worked well until The Kraken was released (this is the 6.4 update - i dont know if you've installed this yet but it gave me a lot of problems) and the errors all centre around Docker not working. I got that fed up that i did a clean install with the current ISO 6.0.24 which i got installed after a few attempts but later when the 6.4 update reared its ugly head i couldnt get Docker and Portainer to work at all. So after an entire day messing around i decided to go back to something that i knew worked for me previously. I have read this new update is causing issues for a lot of people so my advice is to wait and see if it's been fixed (i've been lucky as i have been able to reconnect and sync up my Plex library but others may not be so fortunate).
I agree with Blue Squadron, I moved to Proxmox with CasaOS running in a LXC container and binding my storage to the container.
thank you soooooooo much for you OMV video's.
Thank you for doing this. I was hitting a snag and you solved it.
Glad I could help
Thanks a mil, this really really helped me a lot, keep it up
Glad it helped!
very cool ! excellent ! tks, great explanation.
Hey DB thanks for doing these videos. OMV documentation can be a bit convoluted at times imo,. You do a wonderful job explaining how to get services / apps up and running.
Much appreciated!
I used OMV5, but when 6 came out, I took a look and realized, that all I really needed was docker/portainer. I wasn't really using the other features, and since at the time there didn't seem to be a upgrade path from OMV5 to OMV6, I just stopped using it, and went with a straight docker/portainer install. For me, it just came down to requirements, and I realize that other folks probably didn't have the same experience I had.
I had a similar experience and switched to a Proxmox setup primarily for the high availability and backup features.
Now that you mention it ,I might be doing the same thing lol
This is exactly what I did but then I had troubles with services staying online, so I wiped again and am building back up off of OMV (hopefully lol)
Muito obrigado pela partilha, já tinha reparado que tinha desaparecido, contudo não sabia o porquê. Obrigado mais uma vez. cumprimentos de Portugal
While self hosting is fun to learn and tinker with the end of the day to easily setup a rock solid setup with an amazing interface, unRaid is worth every single penny.
been using OMV since version 4 have not had any issues with it other than when it came to major version upgrades which have gotten much better since version 5.xx, the move to compose plugin, I'm still up in the air about as i feel it still requires some polish, but the way it was done was a bit alarming at first. Having gone through the process and understanding there was zero risk of data loss it wasn't as bad as originally i thought it would be. for the time being though the only service i am running through the compose app is portainer. all other services are still created inside portainer.
Fellow Denverite here. You saved my ass. Thank you!

thanks for the video.
Great tutorial, DB.
Btw you can install Portainer through OMV by going to Services->Compose->Files-> 2nd or 3rd icon (i think it says Create from examples)->then choose portainer or portainer-omv!!! or any of the other pre-made compose scripts.
That's fine, but it's still a huge change from what OMV-Extras did until recently. Seems to have upset quite a few people that all the documentation and tutorials that people made were immediately rendered useless because of the change and apparently no heads up before hand.
The create from examples is far from complete or even easy to use. For example where is NGINX proxymanager found in both portainer and yacht. I do think its not a bad idea what they are doing in the long run.
@@DBTechYT Exactly, i'm new to self-hosting and i heard about OMV from your tutorials but due to this change i had to dig through the web for hours to find out that they moved Portainer into an example script without mentioning it anywhere on OMV-Extras docs.
Thank you for the great tutorials, keep them coming.
Have a wonderful day.
sure... But notice that what was out of the box and easy before require now many undocumented steps that sucks, for nothing added. Just annoying and counter productive. Maybe a way to said people: "go far away, i'm no more user firendly".
Well, the result should probably to be that.... a lot of users will find this to become much easier to just do not install OMV and use Proxmox instead.
Strange... if i where OMV and would like to shot a bullet in my leg, i would probably did the same. Good job !
Thanks, dude! Your comment is realy helpful!
you're the man !!!
Thank you very much
Very helpfull - thank you
Thank you very match!
Hello, great and quite useful tutorial. I’m newby with these things ad I would like to ask you, based and starting from this, how to install IMMICH into the docker / container in OMV ? That’s should be great! Thx a lot
Terimakasih Pak, saya sangat terbantu dengan adanya video ini. Terimakasih Banyak
Sama-sama! Saya senang ini membantu
thank you
Thanks!!!
I'm not a programming wiz and when I found omv 4 it was like the best thing. Now, I don't know. I guess I'll just have to try to learn and adapt as I'm a cheapskate and I like using free and open source programs on a 55 dollar rpi. Thank you for your video. I'll probably need it if my current omv setup dies. It's been stable for at least 3 years. 🤞
i had installed Debian after I changed hard drives(the one I was using went critical on SMART ah well. Anyways, I decided to give OMV a try, but due to issues with installation, I had to first install Debian and then network install OMV. For the longest time I had major issues until I realized I’d installed Debian 12 Bookworm and OMV6 wasn’t compatible, I had to use OMV7. Once I did that it all worked, but now I’m on the newest distro and it’s even more different than what you already showed. OMV Compose has it’s own part, along with everything else 🥴.
Thank you for this insightful video. I'm new to containerized software so a little overwhelmed with portainer/docker etc. Not sure what the role of portainer actually is. Does it provide the same functionality as creating a container and launching it through OMV after install? //for reference want to get a plex server running on my omv install.
Everytime I finish one of your videos I think it will be the last time I need to come to this channel. But then they do an update and I end up right back here. It is like having a friend that only comes over when my server is down and helps me fix it lol
Thanks a lot for this video, helped me a lot. I think that doing this they are taking wrong path, just hope that they change their mind.
thanks again
Hey DB, hope you are doing well. Do you know how to update a pre-existing install or Portainer on OMV6? My setup is out of date and it seems omv stopped updating portainer.
I have OMV 6.4.4-1 running but without the Compose menu, probably because the OMV installation was done some time ago. It seems to work fine, although i did lose portainer once after some updates and also i find that its better to do the updates thru terminal and not thru the OMV Updates.
I followed the original guide to set up OMV 5, docker, portainer, plex, etc. Once the OMV 6 update came out, I lost a bunch of functionality. Glad to have your video walkthrough, as I have found the guides on the forum to be less than helpful. I am having a pretty major issue with this, though. RPI4 install, cannot get docker to work. I can get it installed, but anything I try to do with it gives me errors. I can't even "ps", I just get a permission error. I am a n00b, not a network engineer or programmer (although I can understand a lot, I don't have the knowledge to fix errors). I was originally trying to replace my cloud drive that is now defunct. At this point, I just want to get docker working so I can get Plex running again. Help!
I updated OMV 6 today and although I'm highly confused about the new setup, I really like it in principle. I never used Portainer or Yacht much and always prefered the command line. This just seems like a GUI to the docker compose CLI which is pretty neat. Once everything is setup (which is kind of a pain in the ass, sure) it is pretty easy to deploy stuff orchestrated with docker compose (which IMHO Portainer manages poorly - if at all - via stacks, Yacht does this very nicely). While Portainer and Yacht aims for making managing containers easy, openmediavault-compose seems to aim for a tight integration of docker management into the NAS ecosystem (e.g. the built-in scheduled backup feature). Hence, I don't think Portainer and this OMV extension are comparable in their use cases. The only thing I'm missing in openmediavault-compose right now is to deploy a container without that compose file. Using docker compose just doesn't make sense for single container deployment with volumes (i.e. without bind mounts) only like portainer or yacht. Also, I think a nice support of bind mounts is missing, but I guess they are intended to be edited via a network storage solution like SMB or similar.
However, it just doesn't seem polished enough to be shipped. I constantly getting connection errors to compose, which is a big no-no for a tool that manages my docker compose files. Also it seems that the compose files stored on the drive are note exactly the files executed by docker compose. They seem to be some kind of a step inbetween as there's a comment in the yaml files on disk that changes will be overridden by OMV when edited (this comment does not appear when editing the file over the GUI). So I guess I'll just stick with the CLI for now.
Great sharing, DB!
Been searching high and low for the reason why suddenly my Portainer is gone from the GUI. Now I know. But how do I update my existing Portainer?
Had the same question myself. After one update the gui with portainer and yacht was missing alltogether. I can still reach portainer on it's 9000 port just fine, it's just that it's not in the gui anymore. @DB
1. what happens if I follow the instructions here, will I break my portainer as it seems I will be installing docker again and portainer on a diff port number
2. How can I update my portainer (from original omv-extras)
Could this New repo be in place due to the App Armor issue that has been plaguing users?
Thenxs
Thanks for your video... although I would like to know how to recover the existing containers into the new OMV Extras because I don't want to lose my PLEX installation and start from scratch
You don't back up containers. You back up the data in the containers. Then you re-deploy a NEW plex container. Once it's deployed, you shut it down. Then you copy the data from the backup to the new container location and overwrite everything there.
Pi4 here. What frustrated me is that when I updated OMV I thought I broke docker and portainer. So I wiped out the SD card and restored from image. No big deal. Applied the updates again only to get same result. Then I figured out what was happening! And my portainer containers didn’t carry over so I had to rebuild my media server from scratch using this new docker compose method! Fortunately I kept a docker compose text file of all my containers. So copy / paste into the new OMV compose and done. I will say I have noticed a performance improvement on my Pi4 using OMV Compose over portainer. Navidrome, DAAPD, and AudioBookShelf are way more snappy and I can actually pull updated images without getting errors like I did in Portainer. So annoying when it first came out but now that I know what I’m doing I appreciate the performance boosts.
I was repeatedly getting lost connection when I try to install Dockor compose plugin. Reinstalling OMV6 by leaving it on DHCP resolved the issue for me. . Installing containers directly didn't work out for me. I had to navigate to " add from example" I would recommend changing hover text to "install containers"
Thanks for that. It seems the OMV team doesn't know if they want less or more in the UI.
Thx
do you know how use cli? to import recursively to immich?
If you do an update on the system, then install omv-extras plugin, apply pending changes then restart, the Compose will make a Docker as Installed and running without any fuss. You missed this step - you can see that at 3:46. With that update you can skip to 7:50.
How do we update dynamic ip from omv box to duck dns
I have a SSD I want to connect... The last time I plugged the SSD in, I couldn't do anything anymore... My internet connection was also gone... I formatted the disk on my pc first, before I plugged it in. Did I choose the wrong format, maybe? I'd choose Fat32. Is that wrong?
I had no idea what i was doing, I installed OVm using db tech install guides and used it for docker and portainer now I am starting from scratch again trying to figure out proxmox just to get docker and portainer again :/
I upgraded from OMV4 to 6 since I was upgrading my disks, so I thought "what the hell, let's do it". I stumbled with this new docker/portainer crap and took me a couple of hours to get it running by reading a few guides. I like the challenge but it would have been nice to know it had changed before starting to do it at 9pm.
I really used to like OMV but they've made a lot of changes that I really dislike recently
Thanks. Yes, I think OMV6 new version decision not to have a portainer within the options is annoying.
So, if I want to keep all containers in a specific folder, can I change the left part of "/var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock" to the specified shared folder in OMV6?
That folder is the same I defined in the docker storage path in OMV6 Services|Compose|Settings.
Since I am on a Rasperry Pi 4, I dont want to risk to overload the SD cards.
Much appreciate a suggestion.
Thank you
You can change the path of the volumes for most containers, but if the container has this:
/var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock
Don't change it. That is how the container connects directly to the Docker socket to know what's going on. You can change your other volumes like you mentioned, just don't change the docker socket one.
I quickly research and actually there is no risks of folder growing in /var/run/..
So, I noticed that if I change that path, portainer gets installed but I miss the local Environment. This is fixed now.
Thanks for this video.
I've been using OMV for about a year and a half and it's been OK, but certainly far from perfect.
I went to update my Portainer install today and discovered I wasn't able to update it through omv-extras anymore.
I'm still not sure how to update it, since it's been in place for quite some time and I have several containers running within it.
Updating via the command line failed with an "already in use" type of error.
Such a pain in the butt, for what?
Make sure to stop the container before you update it and you shouldn't get that error
@@DBTechYT I eventually found some useful info on the omv-extraa site that let me get Portainer updated and migrated to their new setup. Was able to migrate my other containers as well.
The new interface is definitely not as polished as Portainer.
I've been watching your videos about OMV and have setup SMB shares to my QNAP NAS which are working in PLEX on CASAOS however when Sonarr is installed I am unable to add these shares as root folders - any idea what I'm doing wrong?
I would think that it has something to do with the permissions you've given the Sonarr container
One of the great advantages of the new plugin is that you can now easily backup your docker-compose (stacks) folder. Nice!
Proxmox has a far superior backup solution to OMV
@@DBTechYT Your probably right, but that's besides the point, if you use OMV then being able to back up docker-compose files is a nice addition.
I don't run many vms or lxd, so OMV suits me fine and with the KVM plugin you can run vms and lxc and now with the docker plugin it's all in 1 package.
Plus as you've shown you can still portainer or yacht.
@@try-that and now, it is no more user friendly, but a headache time added undocumented by the owner. At this headache level time consumed, it is far better to use something other that can do better and best documented. Most of the time, for a little things that can be better, the better thing is the enemy of the good thing. If owner want to go an other one way that just a NAS server user friendly, he should close the project and open a new one. Can call it: "HMG" as "Headache My God".

PLEASE! did you ever figured it out?T_T
Thank you for your tutorial. I just reinstalled OMV and don't understand how to restore the backup. Can you help me, please?
It all depends on how you backed things up.
now with omv7 do see the built-in docker container management solution?
I've recorded 3 videos as part of series talking about how much better OMV7 is that OMV6:

And, to pre-empt your question, no, I will not being doing a video on how to migrate from 6 to 7
good day sir. thank you for the video. I will update my home server later. Thank you for this. I would like to request something. can you make a video of how to make VM using OMV6 plugins? hope this will reach you.
I have been following omv for a long time, from 5 to 6. Unfortunately, the entrance to docker has been changing. I don't understand. Why doesn't it just pack docker together? Why is it necessary to install docker through plug-ins? I hate this change.
I had an issue downloading Docker. I am on my Raspberry pi 4 and I get to the point where after I download Docker and hit the yellow checkmark at the top it loads for a bit but gives a failed warning and its due to two missing keys. Upon inspection of the error it would say "the following signatures couldn’t be verified because the public key is not available" and it references two keys. If anyone had the same issue or knows a way to fix it, please let me know
fixed this
Newbie here. So I can use portainer or compose to add containers to my omv?
I mean.. yeah. as long as you install docker on your system
Thanks for the video. Now Portainer is finally running under my OMV. 👍
Sorry what is the root pw ? is it the pw that I use to enter in my RPI ? I have tried it but it denies me the access. Can you do the same with putty that I know better than using PowerShell ? Thanks
powershell and putty do the same thing with a different interface. the commands aren't going to be any different. the root password is whatever you set up.
i cannot install compose i get 500 internal server error
Why there is no description with links in this video? :( Can you please make video how to install on OMV7 ? I got Docker and Portainer installed but don't know how to do qbittorrent. Thanks
I just checked and there ARE links in the description. I don't know what you think is missing. Also, I've made multiple videos on qbittorrent, so I'd do a search for that.
DB Just a question pls. I have OVM 6.8.0-1 (Shaitan) pi raspberry and suddenly I lose the menu from OMV-extras with docker-portainer etc. as you mention in the first of your video. Have I to follow your video instruction? I have to many portainers that working very well, is there any problem to lose them after that? Thank you
I hope you've got really good backups of your data that you can restore
@@DBTechYT Thank you I understand. Which is the best way for backups? Your opinion?
I would suggest not using OMV at all, but if you want to, I would look at something like Dupicati
ruclips.net/video/--lYljZzrCQ/видео.html (backup)
ruclips.net/video/ijcq4Lx571M/видео.html (restore)
@@DBTechYT Thank you. First i have to look around which is the structure of folders for containers in my raspberry pi4 to take the backups.
Dumped OMV long ago for TrueNAS Scale and use the storage in Proxmox.
I did the same thing with Proxmox and NFS on my Synology
Hi the discord link doesn't work, can you give me an invite please? thanks, I have questions about OMV 7 and how to use docker with omv extras on it, going to setup plex, arr suites, nzb, torrenting and other stuff.
what about "docker volume create portainer_data"??? not needed?
When you run the install command, it automatically creates the volume with the -v
Have you look at Xigmanas?
I haven't and, honestly, probably won't. I looked it up and looked at the interface. The interface looks like it was developed 20 years ago and hasn't been updated since. Interface is important if you're going to spend any time in something. That said, I haven't actually experienced the system, so my only thoughts are on the aesthetics.
It's funny right because I've used OMV for a few years now for my RPI4 home server simply because the install of docker and portainer was dead simple, like 2-4 clicks simple. Now that OMV is moving away from portainer and yacht and creating essentially their own orchestrator, I honestly might just run Raspberry OS and just skip straight to installing docker and portainer and cut out OMV all together. It makes for a cool NAS but I can also just have a docker container handle my NAS solution. All in all, if OMV wanted to push their own orchestrator then at least leave Portainer and Yacht as an option and just let us know in the GUI that OMV has a new section for docker compose. Cutting features people love for ones the devs want to experiment almost never seem to go well from what I've seen.
Sad that they do things without document things, no documentation, no alert, no major update, nothing user friendly in that practice.
I not said that the strategy is good or bad, i really have no idea about this change's choice, but it is a fact that the many steps and lake of documentation is not friendly and push OMV to become agnostic and tricky. Well, it is maybe time to search something else other.
Thank you for your help, you find a new subscriber.
Do you have a video of how to use the Compose service? I haven't used Portainer and I would rather work with OMV's own thing rather than use something else.
One Question. Did Docker create the Volume for portainer_data because you skip the step "create the volume that Portainer Server will use"?
Docker created the volume automatically
How do you then update Portainer from OMV?
I guess you can't!
But u can i stall watch tower that will update all co trainers automatically
You won't be able to update portainer from OMV, but you can follow either of these:
ruclips.net/user/shortsEIPHPuHhVko
dbtechreviews.com/2021/08/how-to-update-portainer-to-the-newest-version/
@@DBTechYT this is factually false.
I found out that there are apparently steps that you can follow that will allow you to install via OMV, but I'd rather do it via command line anyway
I wish they would have kept that change for OMV 7 instead of alienating everyone. They took away the one convenience that kept me using the OS and now I'm backing up my data and blowing it away to install Proxmox. It just so happens that I upgraded my HPE Proliant MicroServer Gen10 Plus from 16GB RAM to 64GB today and after booting it up I find that everything changed with docker and portainer. So I might do a fresh install on proxmox but I will probably weigh my other options first since they had to go and mess everything up from what we are all used to. Really questionable decision on their part.
100% agreed. I left OMV almost a year ago. Switched to a Proxmox high availability cluster and haven't looked back.
I wished that the made a OMV version with Jellyfin on it.
And auto mount disk on Jellyfin. The docker portainer shit is too complex for most people.
That will never happen. They've removed almost all of their 3rd party stuff and are trying to make their own built-in stuff that makes no sense
It has been enough of a pain I’m considering changing my NAS software to something different. Had to do a full re-install of OMV6 on Raspberry Pi and still haven’t gotten it up and running correctly. I’m looking at another complete re-install at the moment to see if it fixes some connection issues, hoping it was a bad raspian lite installation. I have had no eth0 or wlan0 connectivity, which isn’t making sense. But, I agree that the OMV-extras and additional setup steps have made things cumbersome for me.
Thanks for watching and sharing your experience! I hope you get your setup sorted!
I'm on open media Vault 7 and finding a tutorial to start from beginning to end has been a nightmare we need a tutorial taking us from start to the end the current ones are either five or six and are completely out of date. That's for your current video it worked decently I got portainer up and running I just want to create a backup before adding any more stuff I don't want to do a fourth install from scratch
I've actually been considering an OMV7 tutorial series. Actually downloaded the ISO for it recently :)
I do not get it either, they say they are doing it this way for lower overheads, but to remove the option to have choice is very confusing and frustrating after bashing my head to learn V5 omv and then change again to V6
how di I find my root password. I don't think it's the same I use for the admin login
You're not going to "find" your root password. If you can log into the OMV dashboard, you can create a new user and give that user root, ssh, sudo, and users privileges. Once you've done that, you should be able to ssh into your server using the newly created password and then reset the root password with this command: sudo passwd root
That said, if you can't login to the OMV dashboard, you're gonna have a bad time.
they changed it around even more in OMV7
I'm genuinely not surprised
I hate it. I haven't updated omv since February, after some updates they did and messed up portainer (at that moment). It was painful to get it back to work, and I don't want to update again. I'm looking to move to proxmox at this point.
I love my Proxmox setup
@@DBTechYT I am starting getting in to it on a second server. I guess this will be my new path : )
Honestly, I'm just using OMV as a GUI for setting up antivirus and file shares now. If there were another lightweight way of managing those things, I would skip OMV altogether and just go with Docker/Portainer/Yacht directly.
I use Docker in Proxmox for everything these days.
It is a shame, I thought that OMV will be most user-friendly, however it is a headache to install OMV7. I would love a simpliest free NAS OS with basic stuff easy to setup, as app store where we can install in one click a lets encrypt service and other things mandatory for a NAS system.
OMV used to be amazing. OMV5 was what I used when I started this channel. It was such a good OS, but they keep changing things (for the worse in my opinion) and I'm just not all that impressed any longer. I have only taken a very brief look at OMV7, but I might have to take another look at it to see how bad (or possibly good) it is in comparison.
Seems simpler to just run portainer on a different port. Of course, switching between omv frontend and portainer can then be a bit of a hassle
Agreed. Honestly glad I left OMV more than a year ago and switched to Proxmox
I personally never liked Openmediavault. Something always got messed up or broken just by itself or between updates.
OMV used to make my life simple until recent updates kept failing.... and now this, and all my containers are down. So I am going to look at proxmox and setup a cheap x86 host instead of pi 4. I just wanted an easy way to self host, and this is no longer it. May as well learn how to setup a basic HA cluster.
That's almost exactly what I did. With Proxmox, you'll need an odd number of nodes for an HA setup, so that's just something to keep in mind.
Docker installation is very finicky. Sometimes hitting reinstall simply doesn't work. They need to iron that out.
