    I've been watching the progress of this for a while now from Ben's side of things on the various discords. Nice to see the other side of this 👍

      Ben's a great guy, and very talented! Shame he isn't keen on the whole RUclips thing so much as I reckon he'd do a great job of it too 😉

    Oh my god... Is this the homebrew level of quality nowadays?
    This is awesome! Being able to use Switch Lite parts to repair it is great. And the quality of the finishing and internal components is crazy good.
    Congratulations!
    No chance to team-up with a retro game store to sell these?

      Thanks! There's certainly a few people now who are really pushing themselves to create more professional diy gaming devices, it's definitely good to see! As for selling them, I know Ben has sold one or two but they don't end up being very cost competitive on a small scale so we'd never be able to sell enough of them to make it worthwhile considering you can pick up a "comperable" Chinese handheld for under $100. It's also not compatible with any switch lite parts, sorry for the confusion!

      They probably had limitations that they had to work around. Plus theres the display driver issues that they mentioned

    • @cncdan
      @cncdan  9 месяцев назад +2

      Yeah, screen choices are pretty limited in the hobby space unfortunately! Hopefully there'll be more and more open source options for display driver hardware that we can copy in the future!

  • @noble_lime
    @noble_lime 9 месяцев назад +1

    Well, to be honest a switch lite with jailbreak is more powerfun then this (also just get a hall effect joycons for switch lite and would be same cost). Also there are cheap handheld in this form factor for lower cost and similar performance

    • @cncdan
      @cncdan  9 месяцев назад +2

      Yeah, you're not wrong but that view is missing the point a bit. We spent way too much on this thing so it was never about the money. It was about the experience and having an amazing end product that we could both be proud of! Also those hall effect joysticks didn't exist back when we built this, otherwise we would've used them. If I ever have to replace one that's definitely the direction I'll be going with it!

    • @noble_lime
      @noble_lime 9 месяцев назад

      @@cncdan good job btw with the project, I would suggest if possible, use a OLED display and make sure the type c port also gives pd and dp out. Would be nice for using a dock

    • @cncdan
      @cncdan  9 месяцев назад

      @@noble_lime this one accepts USB PD charging but from memory cannot output power. Ben did make a powered dock that breaks out some full sized USB ports and has a little interactive screen for showing some stats and what game is playing. He's upgraded the screen on the new version he's working on but I don't think it's an OLED as they are a bit trickier to work with. Screens are one of the biggest challenges for hobbiests with devices like this so if it's not something that's available off the shelf with an open source driver board, it's very difficult to integrate into a design. Neither of us are electrical engineers so working these things out ourselves is a challenge!

    • @cncdan
      @cncdan  9 месяцев назад

      Each to their own I guess. I think the switch sticks are pretty amazing considering what they acheive in such a small space. Its just a shame about the reliability!

    Calling it now, next up, Raspberry SP
    Or a super chad move is a Rasberry DS, since the 2nd screen is super useful.

    • @cncdan
      @cncdan  9 месяцев назад

      I never owned a DS or a SP so neither of them are quite as special to me as some of the earlier Nintendo handhelds. I've got a Gameboy pocket with a raspberry pi in it which is just about my favourite thing ever but I can see myself doing a GBA version of it possibly in the future with a couple of upgrades! Gotta get the big x86 ones finished first though!

    • @cncdan
      @cncdan  9 месяцев назад +1

      You wouldn't fit anything else in there sadly. Maybe the joysticks I used on the Nucdeck would fit but they didn't exist when we built this!
