How do we know that God exists? Can we know him by reason alone? In this episode of Aquinas 101: What is Efficient Causality?, join Fr. Cajetan Cuddy, O.P., a Dominican friar from the Province of St. Joseph, as he presents how what efficient causality is and how it relates to St. Thomas Aquinas' Second Way for proving the existence of God.

Here is a philosophical critique of the video's explanation of efficient causality:
- The video asserts that essentially ordered causal series must have a first uncaused cause, but provides no justification for why such causal chains cannot be infinite or circular. This key premise is unjustified.
- Aquinas' perspective on causation assumes an outdated Aristotelian view. Modern physics has shown causation is more complex, with phenomena like quantum indeterminacy.
- Even if valid, identifying a first uncaused efficient cause does not establish that this cause has the attributes of God. It could be an abstract property rather than an intentional being.
- The analogy of parental causality used does not accurately model cosmological causation. Human parents may have temporal beginnings, but a non-temporal first cause need not.
- The video conflates different meanings of "cause", equivocating between causal dependency, temporal sequence, scientific cause-effect relations, and metaphysical grounding.
- Simply defining God as the first efficient cause is not proof. Rigorous deductive argumentation demonstrating that such a first cause is philosophically necessary is required.
In summary, the video does not justify key premises about the impossibility of infinite or circular causation that are required to make the argument work. It also does not establish the connection between an abstract first cause and a personal theistic God.
Here is a symbolic logic formulation of the key problems in Aquinas' efficient causality argument:
1. ∀x∃y(Cxy ∧ ~Cyx)
For all x, there exists some y, such that y causes x, and x does not cause y.
1. ~∃x∀y~Cxy
There does not exist some x, such that for all y, y does not cause x.
1. ∴ ∃x∀y(Cxy)
Therefore, there exists some x, such that for all y, x causes y.
Issues:
- Premise 1 assumes causal chains cannot loop or regress infinitely, which requires justification.
- Premise 2 asserts without justification that an uncaused cause is necessary.
- The conclusion invalidly equates this uncaused cause with God conceptually.
- Symbolically, the gaps in reasoning and unsupported premises are evident.
By expressing the argument symbolically, the equivocations and logical leaps in Aquinas' reasoning become clearer. Key premises lack adequate support and the conclusion does not follow deductively.

riight?!?
The HG is going to teach you
I teach SATAN'S LAW OF CONTRADICTION A=B, contradictory impossible big fat lie. So, bro, you argue.
Lets make the argument nobody but the HG through me has ever made.
Your truth proposal?
GOD IS A PACIFIST!
Discovery of contradiction using logic science 101
The law of contradiction A=B impossible big fat lie
A God is a pacifist moral just legal
B God is a non-pacifist moral just legal
Contradiction discovered A=B
This is subjective BOTH AND FALSE TEACHER REASON. Both can't be true that would be A=B contradiction impossible big fat lie.
Fr. Cajetan Cuddy has such a soothing voice! He should narrate more of your videos, if he hasn't already.
We'll have some more videos with Fr. Cuddy coming out very soon! In the meantime, you can check out this playlist with some of his other Aquinas 101 episodes! ruclips.net/video/HdHxmRj-eAY/видео.html

Your argument using logic science 101
Discover contradiction using law of non-contradiction A=B
A life can only come from life moral just and legal
B non life can only come from life moral just and legal
Contradiction discovered impossible big fat lie, it is not possible for both proposals to be true, restore truth using
LAW OF NON-CONTRDICTION
A isn't=to B objective reason 100% absolute truth beyond all reasonable doubt
EITHER A life comes from life moral just and legal
OR B non life comes from life moral just and legal
Not both that would be A=B contradiction impossible big fat lie. 👍😎🤩❤
Your closing argument.
Logically if B non life comes from life moral just and legal
then A life comes from life moral just and legal would mean life would not exist because only non life non existence would exist this is A=B contradiction impossible big fat lie
A non life non existence = B life existence, contradiction and impossible big fat lie.
Scientists know the universe had a beginning. Why?
Law of contradiction A=B
A universe existence had a beginning
B universe existence had no beginning
This is A=B contradiction impossible big fat lie subjective false reason.
Law of non-contradiction A isn't=to B
EITHER A universe existence had a beginning
OR B universe existence had no beginning
Your closing argument
Logically if B the universe existence had no beginning then A universe existence, life would have no beginning and no existence. And this would be A=B contradiction impossible big fat lie
A no beginning no existence = B beginning existence
Intelligence we call God infinity brought finite intelligence into existence.
Now you know how to determine biblical false doctrine, for example
A God the Father = B God the Son = C God the Holy Spirit
Friend the Trinity can be comprehended, by logic science 101
The Trinity is contradiction impossible big fat lie
Please don't let your conscience be seared with a hot iron. God is logic never CONTRARY A=B illogical. 👍😎🤩❤
You have one of the most relaxing voices I've ever heard.

I've always been inclined to religious life. But now I'm too old. I like a lot the dominican vocation. God bless you for effort in teaching the Faith and the Reason behind her. 😄
Hi there! If you're interested in the Dominicans, you can always inquire with the Lay Dominicans (third order). Know of our prayers! www.laydominicans.org/
I don't think you can ever be too old. Unless you're talking about priesthood. In that case, maybe it wasn't your calling?
@@ThomisticInstitute i'll be checking this out as well
Wonderful! May the Lord bless you!
Never too old! It's a tradition for men to enter religious life when older. Monteverdi is one example. Rather a whole period of 60 years has seen people avoiding religious life because it is mitigated and lax now. Centuries ago their was more variety!
Brilliant as always.
Cheers! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. May the Lord continue to bless you!
You can already see the argument coming together and completing itself based on your explanation of efficient causality, but I really appreciate the slow and precise format you’re using to articulate the second way. It is the best and most convincing way in my humble opinion and was instrumental in my path towards Catholicism.
We're very glad to hear that the format is helping, and that the second way was instrumental in your path towards Catholicism! Know of our prayers!
One of the greatest US Presidents made this philosophy easily understood to the non-philosopher: he said "I'd love to invite an atheist to a wonderful meal and after the atheist enjoyed the meal ask him "Do you think from this meal that a cook must exist?".
Awesome video!! Thank you
It's our pleasure! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. May the Lord bless you!
This channel is a blessing, it has top notch presentation, which is sadly one of the most important things these days, people really are conditioned to reject lower quality videos irregardless of content, luckily this channel has both the quality and the content.
God bless you all.

Yes, I really enjoy the information. Very well done. I enjoy the videos. Thank you. x
Such nobility in this lad.

Great video. Thanks.
You're welcome! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. May the Lord bless you!
I am agnostic on the existence of God. I am considering converting to Christianity because of St. Thomas's arguments and your videos. God bless
Comment for traction. 🎉
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment! May the Lord bless you!
I'm hoping the third video makes an argument that would convince the most skeptical evolutionary biologists out there, whom I would imagine saying that our efficient cause is our parents.
If someone can't be convinced by causality in regards of matter and energy...
Are the sculptors' tools considered to be the same efficient cause as the sculptor himself? or are they a different intermediary cause, or outside the question entirely? thanks!
The sculptor is in this example the principal efficient cause; his tools are the instrumental efficient causes.
When you feel connected to your environment I associate myself and the world at large as a piece of fabric and each strand can be enhanced or patched over creating as we go
Similar ideology to some other cultures like each time is a gift we only get once
What are the counter arguments?
The bust of Aristotle exists within the mind of its creator even before the tools were picked up and the block set in place.
The broadcaster sounds a bit like Laurence Fishburn....
Perfect. What is the efficient cause of a "pope" who teaches heresy? It cannot be the Church.
