Shug the guru of hammocking, so good of you to show Mike the negatives of pads. I used a pad for about 2 nights, many years ago when I started hammocking, before I scraped it and went back to UQs. So far your itinerary has matched mine day by day.
Shug good on you Bud! You are a great ambassador for hammock camping. In so many sports and hobbies the newbies are treated with disdain and the fodder for jokes and smugness. People can watch your vids all day long to get pointed in the right direction but until they are out there it just doesn't register. I hope this inspires everyone to take a minute on the trail or at the campground to offer friendly advice and suggestions.
As it is truth that a man's word is more precious than gold. Then a true friendship is more precious than diamonds. It is admirable the friendship between Hickory and you. Keep it alive. 👍👍.
@@shugemery well I'll be....l also have a friend that is named Shawn and we have been friends since 6th grade. My name is Paul, so different names and spelling, but we were always hanging out in the woods. 👍
Used to live in Fletcher, NC and hike the Art Loeb trails. I was surprised to see you on that last year. Just moved to West Union (Walhalla) SC. and here you are! I have not been on the Foothills trail yet but have been to Oconee, Devils Fork and Table Rock state parks. Beautiful area, hope you enjoyed it.
Really enjoyed watching part two shug, lovely butterflies, nice how you showed followed hiker benefits of under quilt. I was almost there with ya. Great adventures shug, thanks for sharing good buddy..did I say good buddy...I meant whoooooo buddy. Atb
Sorry, I will have to look at that again. It sure looked like you had a great time. It really is great to have a friend like you have. You both obviously enjoy each other to the max.
No way! You guys are thru-hiking my county? I wish that I had known, I would have brought up some trail magic and my harmonica! Hope you had a great trip. Next time, holler! ;)
3 hasn't posted down here in Mississippi yet. It takes a while to travel through the wires to here. Takes sunlight a week. Could be that it is smart enough not to come at all. Looking forward to starting the day with it tomorrow. Thanks for sharing.
just found you and already in love. awesome videos! just got back from my first backpacking trip and you're getting me pumped for the next one. :-) cheers.
I love the campsite at the end of this video. Bear Camp Creek, its a shame you didn't see Hilliard Falls, it is Magnificent!! The old Duke Power signs are inaccurate for mileage. The Spur to the falls is only one tenth of a mile!! 200 hundred yards and you can see the falls ahead.
Great camera work on this series. Looks like you've been busy this spring. I see the Maple King lurking in Kent's alter ego. Maybe he needs to get back to his kingdom in the Arrowhead or the North Woods.
Not only do we have feet flavored water now, we have shorts flavored too...lol. That right there tells me that I need to really consider an under quilt if I decide to go hanging in the trees....on to part of the three...
can you imagine, not only spotting the rare and elusive hickery bros, but getting under quill instructions first hand from the man himself! I'd end up saying something dumb like, "oh yeah I heard about that in a Shug video"
Shug, my wife and I love the Hickory Brothers, thanks for sharing everything. What type of map is that at 2:45? What is the scale and who makes it? Be well. Jim
Hey Shug! Im planning a trip later this year, and I was just curious if there is a specific reason most people go from Oconee to Table Rock as opposed to the other way around. Thanks for your videos! And I know it's early, but happy birthday!
Gotcha. I think I have watched the videos out of order and might have missed that. I absolutely love your videos and hope to catch your show sometime. Do you ever do shows in Missouri and have you ever considered hiking the Ozark Trail through here?
I am loving these FHT videos Shug. I think it's great the way you show on the map where you've been. That section down the Whitewater River Corridor is one of my favorite places to hike. You captured it perfectly. Where were you camping at the end of the video? Swampfox
How do you stash your caches? They seem to be far off the road and you would have to spend almost as much time walking in to stash them as you would on the hike proper.
Shug, did you have easy access to your cache locations so you placed them ahead of time, or did someone else place them there for you? I am planning a larger hike for a scout troop and am not sure how to set up a food cache.
hey shug! does the inside of your tarp gets wet when u pull it out from your snake skins if the night before, it rained and you packed it in the snakeskins?
ive been waiting for a hiking vid from shug all spring! happy birthday to you and kent! youve known each for a long time. how long have you been backpacking together?
Hey there Shug! I heard you talk about your days with Hickory in your Boy Scout troop. I just wanted to know if you ever earned your eagle? Thanks and keep getting out there!!
Hey Shug! At 7 minutes into the video, Kent has a strap around a tree to hang his pack on. Do you know where he got that? I'd like to have one for myself. I love your videos and am a little envious that you have a friend who will hike with you. No one is crazy enough to go with me. I hope that you two will take another trip real soon.
Awoke early (EARLY) in the hopes of finding 3. Alas. Must be a Friday the 13th thing. Is it within the realm of possibilities that the protective nature of The M/K has caused Hickory to have a slight touch of OCD?
I see, i'd love a video on planning the logistics of these longer hikes, how to find arterial trails, how far apart, what goes into choosing your hike, miles per day etc. Also get up to the PNW sometime :D
We kinda wing it......study map and area.....including roads that cross trail.......head that way and get to it. Huge chosen usually on terrain or State it is in and will it be easy to get to. Miles per day.......we just estimate and let nature take it's course.

I hiked thru the Round Mt. spur trail today (1-28-17) and that big snag is still hanging up in the trees over Hickory's original hang.
Stiil there.....hanging tough.
Your a celebrity on the trail Shug! Nice thru-Hike.
Really enjoying watchin you two heatherns carrying on. "hickory heatherns"...got a ring to it. :)
I love when at 7:15, Hickery decides to relieve himself!

Shug, you could sell a mosquito net to a mosquito. You had him ready to pay 3 easy payments of whatever for that UQ.
The maple King rullz :D thx for your videos Shug ;)
ps: happy birthday Shug for tomorrow ;)
great video thanks for sharing Shug
All Hail the Maple King!! He Dost Returneth!!...
Shug, my wife and I love the Hickory Brothers, thanks for sharing everything. What type of map is that at 2:45? What is the scale and who makes it? Be well. Jim
It is the one from the Foothills Trail Conference...foothillstrail.org/store/
Hey Shug! Nice map ye got there. I got the guidebook but not the map. Where'd that come from? Thanks for all the adventures!
+juliomb1 foothillstrail.org/store/
I love camping out next to a running river, I would have been sitting there all day lol, good times
True words.
=)
At 13:15, you talk about washing socks. How do you wash them in an efficient way in a river, and how do you dry them?
I just rinse them in the river or lake and dry them in the sun and wind. No soap or anything special. Knocks some of the funk off.
@@shugemery Thanks for the tip!
Hey Shug! Im planning a trip later this year, and I was just curious if there is a specific reason most people go from Oconee to Table Rock as opposed to the other way around. Thanks for your videos! And I know it's early, but happy birthday!
They go both ways. Steeper going from TR to Oconee out of the bag.
Thanks!!!
The sounds of song birds in the dawn light...
Have you ever considered physio tape for your knee(s)?
+Bruce Hodson Have used it. Prefer the brace for hiking.
Gotcha. I think I have watched the videos out of order and might have missed that. I absolutely love your videos and hope to catch your show sometime. Do you ever do shows in Missouri and have you ever considered hiking the Ozark Trail through here?
+Big Al Did the MO State Fair 3 years ago. We want to do that trail someday...or part of it. So many trails to do.

I think it's great the way you show on the map where you've been.
That section down the Whitewater River Corridor is one of my favorite places to hike. You captured it perfectly.
Where were you camping at the end of the video?
Swampfox
+Larry Conley We were backside of Heartbreak Ridge....towards Table Rock. Nice site.
+shugemery must have been the site on Rock Creek. We stopped there for a snack before tackling Heartbreak.
Loving this trip!!
If you're ever looking for a new t-shirt idea... I'd love one with a picture of you and Hickory saying "EARLY!!!" I'd pay BIG money... Lol
Thanks feller. How BIG money?....haaaaa
How do you stash your caches? They seem to be far off the road and you would have to spend almost as much time walking in to stash them as you would on the hike proper.
+Big Al I think we showed in the video. Not too far off trail.
Shug, love your vids! I'm sure you've covered this before, but who makes the stool you always carry with you?
+Bentbrook Stansport camp stool. 17 ounces. About $20
+shugemery Awesome! Thank you!
Shug, did you have easy access to your cache locations so you placed them ahead of time, or did someone else place them there for you? I am planning a larger hike for a scout troop and am not sure how to set up a food cache.
+Mark Fannin We drove to a small trailhead parking ....found a spot about 300 yards off the trail. Hid it under the tires we found. Pretty easy to do.
hey shug! does the inside of your tarp gets wet when u pull it out from your snake skins if the night before, it rained and you packed it in the snakeskins?
+theguanster I roll the tarp then pull the snakeskins...so it is bone dry inside.
+shugemery ok then i must be rolling my tarp wrong :P
These are great videos! Is that the Maple King? ;-)
It is indeed.
ive been waiting for a hiking vid from shug all spring! happy birthday to you and kent! youve known each for a long time. how long have you been backpacking together?
+BUCKSLAYER Backpacking together since 10th grade......1973
very cool! thanks again for sharing with us
Shug when you did your cache did you drive the route first or have someone stash them ammo boxes for you?
+Martin Dawson We drove to the spot. There are several parking and access spots along the trail.
That man at 1550 mark , I bet he appreciated that advise! I gotta get me that Shug Tshirt~!
If you ever see Mike again i bet he has a underquilt, Thanks Shug
what is the red bucket filter thing in the video (brand and name) i saw it at 12:45 i belive
It is a water filter no longer available. ULA Amigo Pro.
MOST EXCELLENT!!!!
Hey there Shug! I heard you talk about your days with Hickory in your Boy Scout troop. I just wanted to know if you ever earned your eagle? Thanks and keep getting out there!!
+Caleb Light No Eagle. Life Scout. 3 merit badges but I spread them on my sash. I told my Scoutmaster I was there to camp!
+shugemery Though I learned a ton just being a scout for 6 years and great leaders!
+shugemery I am currently life trying for that Eagle! I am currently the Senior Patrol Leader of a troop and love to camp.

It is just a ratchet strap he uses. We hope too get out this Winter.
when and how did you do the "ammo" stash? I mean the planning ahead and putting them them there?
We just picked a spot we could drive too near the trail. Just took some map study. Only so many places you could do it.
Thank you my friend. I have my "that's a purdy boil" shirt on the way...and coffee mug. Can't wait to show them off.
Awoke early (EARLY) in the hopes of finding 3. Alas. Must be a Friday the 13th thing. Is it within the realm of possibilities that the protective nature of The M/K has caused Hickory to have a slight touch of OCD?
Ok, what's the story with the camp stools? They are blue and personalized...not your old traditional jacks-r-better style.....I'm loving it!
+flightchick1967 Men of a certain age like a stool.
When hammock camping, how do you deal with mosquitos? Do you have a bug net that you lay over your hammock?
+Charles Marsh I had one but was not buggy.
+shugemery could you elaborate on what you and Hickery used for those nets? Commercial or DYI?; Oh and Happy Birthday Shug!
Shug, Will you or have you ever thru hiked the Appalachian Trail?
+one234569and10 No interest to thru hike the AT.
shug do you mind if I ask how many miles or Kilometres you tend to walk each day on an average trip out.
No set average. all depends on the particular trip. some are about miles, some are about the journey.
What was the temperature when you where showing the under quilt?
+Charles Marsh maybe 70º
Sure looks nice in that neck of the woods, one day . . .
I'm thinking the Maple King will make an appearance ....could be sudden and unexpected but I think he's there
+Mr EOS He has already made two, just not by name yet. It is slowly taking him over.
What'd you do with the ammo boxes after unloading them into your packs?
Re hid them and then went back to get them after we finished the trip.
I see, i'd love a video on planning the logistics of these longer hikes, how to find arterial trails, how far apart, what goes into choosing your hike, miles per day etc. Also get up to the PNW sometime :D

+Patrick Caple (No Trail Required) Just great old friends for over 40 years. Best man at my wedding.
They're multiplying. Now there's three of them...
+mobiltec Oh....there are even more.
How many days did it take you and your brother to complete the hike? Films didn't make it clear.
+Charles Marsh I thought it was clear on the finale. 6 nights.

+Bobby Fournier I just prefer them. Tit for tat in my book. Love my Fancee Feest
What kind of water sack is that please? @shug
It is a no longer available Amigo Pro. But there are plenty of other gravity water systems out there.
