    One thing that has stuck with me about AMB is how Elias looks so villainous out of context. Even his brand of magic is shadow and thorns. In one scene we see him flat out turn into a puddle of shadow with red eyes. Yet he is also one of the kindest and most gentle characters you are bound to see. Added to that is Chise's familiar, Ruth the Church Grim which is, by definition a spirit that guards graves and will hunt down and kill any who desecrate the church yard: a subject of many horror stories in both fiction and folk lore. Yet again, the giant black dog with red eyes is a gentle, caring soul. It's all so wonderful and sweet.

    • @alucard347
      @alucard347 5 лет назад +3

      I just love when they take the characters who could easily be seen as horror villains and show them as heros.

    • @smurfette_blues7922
      @smurfette_blues7922 5 лет назад +1

      Totally!! It reminded me how in spirited away, haku's design as a magical river dragon is first introduced as a fierce beast, with bloody and snapping jaws. And chihiro just dotes on him like a scared dog. Or how in princess mononoke, san's loving mother is a giant and vicious wolf god. It's the contradiction that makes these concepts such a heartwarming visual. Seeing graceful looking characters love, much like an underdeveloped character, is very one dimensional. Contradiction is the key to three dimension. So that's why kindness or love seems more compelling, and perhaps more authentic, when the characters have ferocious looks and mannerisms.

    • @plazy._.8094
      @plazy._.8094 6 лет назад +4

      asifur rahman At first I had to agree, but everything you said really isn't there. First of all there's no slavery, Elias even broke her chains. Second, it's later revealed in the anime that Elias has the mind of a child. So yes it's underage, but idk for some reason that makes it less creepy to me. Like he's a mystical being who could easily change his form so he could be Chise age physically if he wanted. Now the sugar daddy bit.....no lol you got me there. He's a bit of a sugar daddy. But shhh that's okay. Give some to get some. It's all good.
      Also in the drama genre of Anime you can't really expect sunshine and rainbows. So there's gonna be dark themes. Sorry about your moral lol

    There are dozens of reasons I adore this anime, but the one I will mention will be it's heart wrenching depiction of depression and trauma. No spoilers but Chise really has gone through some harrowing things, and we can physically see the way it affects her in the present and how it affects her decision making. As someone who has suffered from those afflictions myself, I was awestruck to see this fantastical, magical anime, portray something so real and something so personal to my everyday life. It shows both the despair and beauty of being alive that I have yet to see any other media hold a candle to. I have never seen myself so much in a character and I highly suggest everyone give this anime a chance.

    I bought the first volume of the manga because a random stranger recommended it to me. However I didn't read it until I watched the three episodes of what I think was the OVA on Crunchyroll. After that I finally read the first volume and basically rode my tricycle to the book store to buy the rest. I even went to see the first three official episodes of the anime in theaters and am now eagerly waiting for the eight manga and the fourth episode to be released.

    I need to say this, the OVA is actually what got me completely hooked on the series. I came in when they only had 2 of the 3 OVA's out, and it seriously got me to actively seek out the manga and read it. The only thing I can recommend for people coming into this series for the first time, watch Episodes 1 & 2 back to back. Episode's 1 pacing is very slow, and covers information that needs to be talked about before anything can move on, this holds true in the manga as well. Episode 2 is a better example of what the series is about, and the pacing is absolutely fantastic.

    I watched the OVA first without knowing anything at all about the manga and it only intrigued me to watch the anime AND buy the manga (which is saying something, since I haven't bought manga volumes for at least 5 years). I’m not 100% sure how you determined this was a ‘shounen series with a girl protagonist’, as it’s pretty clearly a fairytale romance aimed at girls (or ideally mixed audiences)? Maybe you need to question a couple of your assumptions about what a shoujo series is allowed to be, lol. There’s no need to legitimize enjoyment of a show by claiming it’s something more traditionally masculine than it actually is, yknow?
    That being said, I like this show a lot and am glad you’re enjoying it too.

    • @OsnosisBones
      @OsnosisBones 6 лет назад +3

      Not to rain on your parade, but the show is actually in fact placed into the shonen demographic. Like officially. You are right about how the show itself doesnt really limit itself to the audience most-expected of its genre though. It's doing its own thing, which is being essentially a celtic fairytale.

    • @zenzenitha
      @zenzenitha 5 лет назад +2

      I was surprised too hearing that and even more amused after finding out it does marketed as shonen. It's frustrating how making things seemingly more masculine makes it more "universal" so to speak. It's not about this series in particular but more about the general market

  • @Antidragon-nl7by

    1:16 It's a bold move foe an escapist show be dour and depressing right off the bat, but I find that the shows where encouragement and uplifting moments are _earned_ are all the more meaningful because of it.
    I would say that this feeling of achievement is what made _Attack on Titan_ such a success, where the forces the protagonists are fighting against seem primed to walk right over them at any moment... up until they actually start gaining small victories. _The Ancient Magus' Bride_ by contrast has the main conflict be between a young girl and her own despair, yet somehow is no less epic and meaningful in spite of that. It's always a mark of superb storytelling when you are able to do more with less.

    Now let's wait awhile and see the fandom turn into slight shit. And hopefully it will stay as a slightly shitty fandom.
    But even if it does turn to shit, don't let the obsessives and elitists, or worst of all, the obsessive elitists ruin it for you. And don't ruin the experience for other people either. And if we could all respect each other's opinions without fighting over them, I'm sure that every fandom would be a little less shitty or toxic.
    But I guess what I am trying to say is that be a respectable person in any fandom that you might invest time in, but if the people there are really toxic and ruining your experience you should just leave the fandom and enjoy whatever it is you enjoy yourself. If you read this all, I hope you have a nice day.

    In terms of atmosphere and pacing, this show heavily reminded me of Over the Garden Wall and Wolfblood, so for me, it is already the best anime of the season, and it may be the best of the whole year.

    Lol i watch the OVA before the anime eithout reading the manga and it only made me want to watch the full anime more. Im a sucker for quasi-art anime, but this is somehow my favorite anime, despite me seeing more than 200 anime, despite me only starting anime about 3 years ago, if not less. Also, I agree, that opening is on its own tier of quality

  • @amelumineux

    It seems we have very different opinions of the ovas, I haven't read the manga and I watched the ovas before the main show and I wasn't left confused, while there was stuff that wasn't fully explained I didn't expect it to be as there's only so much you can do with 3 self contained episodes that aren't just expostion dumps and I found the story beautiful and heartbreaking and just about every emotion at the same time, I abosulty loved the ovas and gave them a 10/10 before watching the show.
    All that being said we can agree that is one of the best shows this year

    Considering that there's only 3 episodes out (not counting the OVA which is actually pretty good if you watch it after watching the available episodes first) and I already really, REALLY want more, I'd have to agree that this is shaping up to be a classic. This is coming from someone who hasn't read a page of the manga yet. It's seriously impressive that they've managed to make the characters feel so real in such a fantastical setting and with so few episodes.

    My favorite part about this anime is the relationship between Chise and Elias. Their relationship is built upon their individual personalities/how they feel about eachother, and is almost entirely void of sexual tension, so the love between them is in it's purest form, lacking the "blinding" effect physical attraction is famous for.

I would say this is maybe my favorite of this year I honestly can't think of any other anime that had me coming back like this one did.

    If you think about it, a lot of shounens have "magic", the big three: Naruto, One Piece and Bleach have some type of magic. As well as D. Gray-man, FMA, Hunter X Hunter, Soul Eater etc But magic as in witches, wizards, dragons, fairies etc. typical Western magic fantasy are more rare. Good examples of Western influenced fantasy are: Berserk, Magi, Seven Deadly Sins, Howl's Moving Castle, Claymore, Little Witch Academia, Kiki's Delivery Service, Shingeki no Bahamut, Slayers, Saint Seiya, Pandora Hearts, Hakushaku to Yousei, Snow White with the Red Hair etc.
    There's also the Japanese mythology type of magic setting separate from the Western fantasy setting like in Inuyasha, Noragami, Mushishi, Natsume Yuujinchou, Hoozuki no Reitetsu, Mononoke, xxxHOLiC, Nurarihyon no Mago, Kamisama Hajimemashita etc.
