      Sorry quick question : in the case of the druid circle of stars, if there is a feature like the starry form, that should update in the future because of the other feature (add damage to the archer form, or level 14 with Full of stars, Starry form give resistance to 3 types of damages. How do you manage to do this please? Is there a way to upgrade a feature through time without going in again? Thank you !!@@alaustin.

      @alaustin.  10 месяцев назад +1

      Happy to help! These sorts of edge cases I usually tackle case-by-case and in terms of what feels most usable in the moment (which usually I adjust once an actual player of mine tries to use it, lol).
      For Starry Form, I just listed the forms in the description but I added a SEPARATE feature item for Archer that can be used to roll the attack/damage.
      For Full of Stars I didn't attempt to automate it or anything, mostly because resistances weren't automatable or functional in the system at a core level. It was just something I would tell the player to note on their sheet.
      BUT that may have changed with the latest dnd5e update which added a crap ton of stuff to the leveling system, I just haven't had a great chance to look at it yet.@@takogames9552

    Can you tell me what the scheme was for making your own artificer infusions?

    • @alaustin.
      @alaustin.  11 месяцев назад

      Sure! Artificer admittedly has a LOT going into it, and if you try to make the whole class + all 3 subs it'll take a hot minute because of all the infusions and whatnot.
      First, I would make a feature type Item for every infusion. Just get the name down, and I personally included "Infusion: " at the start of every item name. Then paste in descriptions and prerequisities if there are any.
      Most infusions don't need anything special, but occassionally you can make the item an active action/bonus action and give it a range or attack or healing or whatever. Just go down the list until everything is basically setup, but DON'T do any item linking at this point (as in don't drag other items into the text fields creating dynamic links).
      Once you've got all the features created and mostly dont, make a folder for them in your Shared Compendium and drag everything in there. Now do the rest of the editing on the items from within the compendium, not from your sidebar. Probably just delete the original copies from your sidebar to not get confused.
      Now, you can edit the items in the compendium and go back through the descriptions to add any item links and whatnot. This is technically totally optional on most of them, but I always do it for max convenience down the road. For example the Arcane Propulsion Armor, I created a Weapon type item for the gauntlets, set those up, tossed them in the same compendium for ease of access, and then linked that weapon in the Infusion's description.
      Once you've got all the infusions in your compendium and set up the way you like, then I create an additional Feature item just called "Artificer Infusions." I then put a table in the description with each infusion linked from the compendium. I then put the Artificer Infusions item in the class advancement so when players level up, they will get the feature and can peruse through the table, dragging on whichever infusion they choose.
      I admittedly didn't do a TON of work on the infusions, like anything that gives you a +1 weapon or armor, I didn't bother making an active effect or anything fancy. I just put a note that said "pick a weapon and edit it manually." The 5e channel on the community Discord would be good at walking through the fancy stuff.
      Here's a pic of the setup I have, hope this helps: imgur.com/a/LMx4nuy

    • @alaustin.
      @alaustin.  Год назад +1

      You can do that! The dnd5e system doesn't have a proper Race item type yet, so the more important thing to do is make Feature items for your homebrew races' features, if they need it at all. For me, I just made a Feature item type with the name of the race (like Elf) and then within that item linked to all my other features that race is supposed to have, making kind of a little hub item that players can reference and easily drag/drop features from.

I'm not sure if you've covered this already, but I was wondering if it was possible to automate a feature that depends on another being activated, such as the Arcane Charge feature for Eldritch Knight, where the feature activates when the Fighter uses their action surge. Or, likewise, the Improved War Magic feature, which allows you to make a weapon attack as a bonus action when you cast a spell.

      Thanks! Sounds like you dragged the features into the class advancement from your Items tab, so when you transferred the Classes/Subclasses to another world, they were still trying to link to items that were no longer in the sidebar.
      When you build out the advancements, make sure you are dragging features that are ALREADY IN the Shared Compendium, so it references the items from THAT location, which it will be able to find in any world that has the compendium enabled.

      Just create a new Item, set it as a Feature typed item, give it a title, icon, and description, and that's about all I did. You can probably get a little fancier and add an effect to the item that automatically enables the proficiency when you drag it onto a character sheet, but I haven't gone that in depth mostly.

    Hey, new user, I was wondering if the new class has to be made in the items, or if it can be put in the compendium. I saw you put it in the items list. Before this video, I would've assumed to put it in the compendium w/ all the SRD classes (in its own folder though), but I see you've created it in the items. What is the reason for one over the other? Sorry if this is a dumb question, just getting my bearings.

    • @alaustin.
      @alaustin.  Год назад +2

      Not a dumb question! I'll try to explain
      The class item does initially have to be CREATED in the Items tab, you can't create them elsewhere. But, at some point in the process, you can MOVE it to a compendium. I actually have two videos on making shared compendiums (for V11 and pre-V11).
      Here's what you need to know - Compendiums hold COPIES of things in the Items folder. If you drag it into a compendium, it's essentially saving a copy. So either make all your changes in the Items tab and then copy it over, or copy it over immediately and do all your editing on the Compendium entry.
      Another note, do NOT add things to the compendiums that come with the game system (they are labeled with the game system in question and should all be locked by default). The game system compendiums are OVERWRITTEN when you update the system, they are only intended to hold content that the game system provides. If you put something into a compendium, it needs to go into a compendium YOU created.d
      Lastly, when it comes to connecting items together. I would assume you want to make classes and subclasses and features that you can use in any of your game worlds. You have to be careful about how you set up your items. When you connect a class feature into a class item advancement, let's say you want to add Disarming Strike to Battle Master, you just drag and drop. When you do that, you tell the Battle Master item to LOOK for the Disarming Strike feature in the spot that you dragged it from. So if you drag it from the Items tab, that is where Battle Master will look for it. If you ever delete or move Disarming Strike from there, the link will not work anymore. So drag all your links FROM items in a compendium, TO items in a compendium. I cover this in my shared compendium videos, I think.
      Sorry for the wall of text, hopefully that wasn't too terribly confusing. If my other videos don't explain that better, don't be afraid to jump into the community discord and ask for some guidance. Everyone there is knowledgeable and friendly.

    Has no one created a "additional 5e compendium" for the stuff that is not in the 5e srd. Don't tell me that this is not allowed. You cannot copyright game mechanics. You can create the rest of the content with non-copyrightable text. Solasta exists because of this, Pathfinder exists because of this. all of the OSR exists because of this. Adding things like the Tinkerer Class with (Alchemist, Gunslinger, Armorsmith, and Construct Smith) subclasses for example it would be custom third party material same as any other... Maybe I am using wrong search parameters?

    • @alaustin.
      @alaustin.  7 месяцев назад

      Unfortunately this is not correct - the SRD is released under the creative commons license. Anything in the SRD as such can be reprinted, redistributed, used, etc etc within the parameters of CC. This is also why homebrew sources can create their own content that uses 5e-specific terms like "advantage" and whatnot - it's because that is SPECIFICALLY allowed to be used by WOTC.
      The rest of 5e is very much protected. The content couldn't be redisitributed legally via any source that hasn't been approved by WOTC, and even then WOTC sets the terms for HOW it can be distributed by those sources (which is why you have to pay for it literally everywhere and physical books don't translate to D&D Beyond and vice versa - WOTC dictates it is paid for in each location).
      Now, Foundry HAS only in the past few weeks come to a licensing agreement with WOTC. They are NOW allowed to sell official content, but they have to get around to making it first. But no one else would be allowed to just make a module full of all of the content and distribute it for free.
      (Obligatory "I am not a lawyer" disclaimer).
      Now, if someone were to create a class called the "gunsmith" or some such and had features that were identical to the artificer but did not use any of the written descriptive text (the text itself is the big sticking point for copyright law) would that be fine? Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. MAYBE. (Do not do this I am NOT encouraging anyone to do this). But everyone with a brain obviously understands that that's very much skirting the line, at best. Which means Foundry would likely have to shut it down (especially nowso that they ARE licensed).

    • @Adamthegeek70
      @Adamthegeek70 7 месяцев назад

      @@alaustin.Fortunately you are wrong. And I do have half a brain, an whole one in fact... Your insults aside, you are 100% wrong. Copyright law doesn't work that way. Mechanics CANNOT be copyrighted. As long as it is not a cut-n-paste job. As long as you use your own words and do not use specific names taken from. i.e Tiny Hut, Floating Disk, Magnificent Mansion etc. Pathfinder is D&D 3.5, Every OSR game is Basic (OSRIC, OSE etc). The biggest example of what I am saying is Solasta Crown of the Magister, and its mods. WOTC backed Baldur's Gate. But not Solasta. They used the SRD. and added to it. If this was not ok, WOTC would have sent the Pinkertons to their door. In fact importing from D&D Beyond or pulling from a PDF, and using that on a cloud hosted server is way more grey area and sketchy than 3rd Party Community Content Module which is NOT skirting the law. We can see successful usages of the copyright boundaries throughout the entire table top gaming community and many others but gaming is the biggest. LOL also Words with Friends is Scrabble btw. Just watch stuff from around the OGL debacle time , listen to what the Rules Lawyer says he is an lawyer. Even the Legal Eagle guy got into it WOTC uses this themselves... halfling vs hobbit. WOTC is banking on people being to afraid to do it, its not illegal at all.

    • @alaustin.
      @alaustin.  7 месяцев назад

      @@Adamthegeek70First off - wasn't supposed to be an insult toward you specifically, I was just referring to how skirting the rules is usually obvious enough that most people will realize that's what is being done. That still needs to be struck down out of an abundance of caution if nothing else. Sorry bout that.
      Secondly, I have seen this conversation go down like 10,000 times at this point hanging out in the support Discord. I won't argue with you about it, so if you want to go create everything and leave out just the proper nouns, feel free, and then feel free to email it to WOTC and show them how you're distributing it and see how they feel about it. They'll love it.

      It sounds like the links are pointing to a location that is world-specific, hence why the new world cannot find the links anymore.
      You want to make sure you set up the advancements like this:
      1) Create each of the class/subclass features in your Items sidebar tab.
      2) Store each of those created items in a Shared Compendium module
      3) Created the class/subclass item in your Items sidebar tab.
      4) Link the advancements using the features IN THE SHARED COMPENDIUM.
      5) Store the class/subclass item in the same Shared Compendium (it can be a different compendium pack, but should be the same module).
      That will ensure the classes are referencing items that are actually within the compendium that jumps between worlds. Rather than it trying to link back to an Items sidebar that is in a different world.
