Robert Bloch wrote the episode ' wolf in the fold' for the original star trek....about a creature who lives by creating fear and then feeding on it, it is defeated by laughter....timely.
"Defeated by laughter" ... that reminds me of children's story, Five Children and It, where "It" is overcome by the children's love. Madeline L'Engle also wrote A Wrinkle in Time.
I was a new kid on the Bloch but not anymore👻👽💀😱. Took me almost a day to finish this collection. Between Ian's superb narration and the contents, I have become addicted to HB. I was trying to ensure that I have not missed any tale, but I didn't take into account how prolific HB has been. O so many great scary readings, not enough hours in the day!
I can't believe how many times I enjoy listening to this, over and over. The fact that you end with my favorite, "Lucy" (you know which one I mean) is always a great plus. Having compilations like this is such a pleasure in life!
Bloch has a phenomenal writing style, he has a fantastic vocabulary, and uses it beautifully to deliver a richness of narrative that's all too lacking in many writer's material. 😁
@@kokorospirit5006 Good writers need to be read. 😊 Have you attempted 'Paradise Lost' by Milton? Its an absolute classic, its a bit of a hard read, but well worth it 🙂
Wow this turned out to be quite a long one, watching them all come out was fun, the consistency to which you upload narrations and the quality of those narrations (plus people can all watch these for free) never ceases to amaze me. Keep on doing what you love Ian Gordon, it makes me and many others very happy!
Excellent. Whilst working in my lab late at night it is good to know that I am not alone in my outlandish and mayhap crazy experiments with reanimating the dead etc. There’s always fun to be had when listening like minded fiendish weird tales of mystery. Occasionally I get some good ideas. But never forgetting when laughing at that eureka moment to go full on loop loop loony maniacal bonkers otherwise I wouldn’t be me ! ☠️
"To". Great image of Wilder as Young Frankenstein (at least that's whom the image appears to depict & it fits your self-description). In being yourself there'd be no forgetting to "go...bonkers" as it would occur spontaneously. Research into resurrection & related areas stopped being outlandish long ago and became mainstream within circa the last 15 years or more.
But hey just because actual science caught up with fiction (there's quit a bit that isn't released to the public in this case because then everyone would want to live forever, and going back to the 50's and 60's consider the two-heads-same-body doggie experiments that were made public then imagine the far more horrifying experiments that weren't along with the more recent much more ethical DNA and blood-infusion work et al) is no reason to cease the fun of listening to like-minded fiction as you engage in real-world work. It's the creative geniuses like you, HP L and Mel Brooks who help make life worth living, and re-living (barely enunciates "putting on the Ritz" for effect).Thank you Shelley and Stoker for making the bet that led to Dracula and Frankenstein and eventually Lovecraft and the myriad of others before and after who've created a rich culture of imagination and helped horror reach the same heights of expression using written English (Just read "The Great God Pan" for an example of the heights English can reach even if it is "just horror" as some might say).
Cut my milk teeth on Robert Bloch stories. Love his black humour and terrible wordplay. Even his autobiography showed his sense of humour. Once Around the Bloch - An Unauthorised Autobiography. Lol. Quite funny when you know he wrote Psycho, about multiple personality. He asked that The Collected Works of Robert Bloch be engraved upon his urn.
Yes, a beautiful collection of Mr. Bloch's stories, I hope you will consider Henry Kuttner for a coming collection of stories around a writer..... Thanks for these "lovely" tales.
@@HorrorBabble By the way, that rare story I found, "The Black Kiss" a collaboration between Bloch and Kuttner, features a nephew of Michael Leigh we know from The Salem Horror. I hope you can find the story. It really belongs in the Cthulhu Mythos. Have fun and keep safe.... All the best from Holland.
Excellent choice of an author perfect for anthologizing ( it must be a word, spellcheck didn't flag it!) Robert Bloch is one of the true masters of the short horror story. The quality material and the stellar narration make for truly rewarding entertainment, You do a great job and it's much appreciated. btw. Another prolific author whose work would fit nicely with the tone and spirit of Horrorbabble is Richard Mathiesen . I'm not sure of the spelling, but should be easy to locate. His best known work is probably "I am Legend" but he has dozens of short stories as well.
I am in possession of a bundle with 33 Bloch stories. Together with the others from the "Lovecraft Circle" they're my favorite writers I listen to before I go to sleep. Awesome.
@@RolandWieffering1 Oh, me too! I even used to try and collect the original Weird Tales magazines, but, as you can imagine, it's just too prohibitively expensive--especially if you're looking for a Robert E. Howard story in it. It's just especially pointless because of Horrorbabble and other audiobook resources, I suppose. Nevertheless, at least once you should try to pop on eBay and snag a copy at a good price! There is just something special about flipping through a nearly 100 year old magazine featuring authors who would never imagine the impact and enjoyment their stories would bring!
I found in a second hand bookstore a booklet with a few very rare stories. "Weird Legacies" is the title with 9 stories from Weird Tales. The Survivor by Lovecraft and Derleth. The Black Kiss by R. Bloch and H. Kuttner. The Utmost Abomination by Clark A. Smith and Lin Carter. These are just a few of the 9 stories in that book... It cost me 1,50 euros.... Such a joy for that price..... Jahoo....👍🏻🤫😜
Robert blocks great talent continues to shine even today! He is a clear precursor to Stephen King, but on a vastly different track, which I enjoy. Let's hear it for Robert block!\
l really like and find Bloch fascinating. he’s scary, but not terrifying with awful endings. - (but i don’t get the connection to Stephen King, whom i really don’t like, except for the hotel movie, which i think is different from the book anyway.)
I loved 'Psycho' but hadn't read much else from Bloch other than the Lovecraft Circle stories. Was skeptical... but I loved every story and very well narrated! 👏🏽I think I have a new writer to binge on☺️🖤 Thank You So Much! Y'all are awesome 🖤❤️
Yes, wonderful reading. He loves the words, but doesn't ogle them! * On films, there's one on RUclips, The Night Walker, with Barbara Stanwyck as woman whose dead husband is giving her nightmares and wants to kill her. That film brought me her, by the usual route!
@@sohara.... I know the horrorbabble readings are so perfectly done☺️🖤 PS: Thank you so much- I have yet to see that one, but will definitely check it out.🙂👍🏽
these are really such kookie and weird stories - i really love them. the lab of comic books is totally hilarious. how the devil influences each person works so well psychologically. i really like his oddball way of thinking. thanks so much for these and, of course, you read them with such imagination :) 🌹🌱
I read Notebook Found in a Deserted House when I was in 6th grade and even though I had forgotten the author it remained one of the most memorable short stories I ever read. It was my introduction to Lovecraft lore is still a terrifying read 40 years later. Bloch was brilliant and it annoys me that Psycho was so overshadowed by Hitchcock that few people know it was a Bloch story.
Pity you didn't include Yours Truly Jack The Ripper. (Read a comic adaptation by Marvel years ago illustrated by Gil Kane). He also did a Jack based story in the ST:TOS Wolf In The Fold.
Alright chaps, I’ve ‘temporarily’ slipped in here and will be using this account to debunk any further rumours of my death. Partly because it’s getting difficult to continually fake my own death and partly because Ian insists on informing the general RUclips community that I’m dead on a weekly basis. Glad to see this is a Rue Morgue collaboration as I can sleep tonight. Yours sincerely alive, Warren
