    I have a Pro 100. At $500 it's the best value in printers that will do show-quality prints. I've made prints as good or better that I had made by Whitewall, and they've been accepted into the best shows in my state. The only problem is that they won't print larger than 13"x 19". I use Canson and Hahnemuele papers, but I've sent for Red River sample packs.

    I enjoy using metallic paper from different brands. But it doesn't work with all the subjects. I found that foliage, mountains, trees and people look weird when printed on it. However photos with a lot of sky or water in them look fantastic!
    I am still learning how to use matte maper and so far my favorite is Photo Paper Pro Premium Matte.

      Not a huge fan of metallic papers. But with a good dye printer like the canon pro-100 or printer printer with a gloss enhancers they can produce quite striking results.

    Just got my sample pack + the heavy weight papers and light weight. I really like to Arctic Polar metallic for my astro shots. I also like the Palo Duro SoftGloss rag. Have you ever used that paper? It feels very nice in the hand. Seems similar to the Baryta. With all the papers that come in the kit I can’t print on every one now but do you have any favorite satin, semigloss, luster, or matte papers. I would really like to know what you like. What are a few papers that are your go-to’s that you stock up on?

      Muchas GRACIAS! Voy a Probar con ICC de Papel Matte y otra prueba con el ICC de Precision Colors para el Papel de Staples a ver cual me gusta mas. Pero muchas gracias por el dato! (Tengo un Canon ImagePrograph Pro-2000.- Lo amo! Se llama Maui :) Y trabajo con la pantalla calibrada todo el tiempo )..........DESPUES DE LA PRUEBA: Pues el ICC de Precision Colors me dio los colores mas parecidos a mi soft proofing y tengo mucho mejor definición en los oscuros que con el ICC de Canon Premium Matte Paper, donde el ultimo grado de los negros se medio "enpastelo". Excelente ejercicio.

    Quite an interesting subject. Yeas ago (10+ years) when I had a canon 9000 with dye inks that finally died with totally clogged channels, I bought many sheets of Ilford gallery classic gloss paper 13X19 inch. Can I use them on my epson 3880 (pigmented inks) , and recalibrate them with the CMKi Photo ?

    Jose, I know you're a fan of Canon Luster but can you tell me the difference in the look of the print between luster and semi-gloss? I have quite a bit of semi-gloss but am not opposed to offering both for my prints. I'd just like to know the pro or cons of each. Thanks a lot!

    • @cheo1949
      @cheo1949  7 лет назад

      Luster is a bit coarser or more pronounced surface texture as well as a bit more gloss than Semi Gloss. Not a bit difference. I prefer SG if I am printing an Image that is a bit more refined in look.

    • @rpkrayz
      @rpkrayz 7 лет назад

      Stick with what your "Gut" tells you is best for your prints. Never "go with the flow"! You choose what your standard "Brand" or "Look" for your work is to be.

  • @oaklandtobangkok

    Hi Jose, great insight on papers. I have a question though. Do you recommend to do a Color Munki paper to profile match on every paper? (I mean the whole print out of targets/readings etc.). I have done it a few times but truly never made a real comparison. Is it truly worth the ink on 'every' paper, even the least used ones? I realize this is a question much like "What's the best paper" question. Thanks for all your great work.

    • @cheo1949
      @cheo1949  8 лет назад

      If you are truly picky you should if your are not then you can use the canned profiles that CANON / EPSON paper come with or the ones other paper manufacturers provide. But you must be using IEM inks for that to work.

    • @oaklandtobangkok
      @oaklandtobangkok 8 лет назад

      Thank you Jose. Right out of the box, with the .icc profiles, the Pro-10 seems to get results I am happy with. I hate wasting ink/paper for minute results. I'll be sticking with OEM inks as I just got my backup set delivered. Thank you Jose.

    • @cheo1949
      @cheo1949  8 лет назад +1

      That's always my advice. Don't Fix it if it's Not Broken. Results right out of the box are so goo that unless you are doing Art Reproduction work you often don't need anything else. Good luck and enjoy that PRO-10

    Hi Jose,
    Is paper affected if exposed to light for a few days?
    I printed something that the paper was sitting exposed to the light...The Color was way off..... CYAN.
    The next print that "was not" exposed to the light, and it was fine???

    • @cheo1949
      @cheo1949  7 лет назад +1

      You mean exposed to light before printing???
      I've never heard nor seen that. I have sheets of RR San Gabriel 1.0 cut from rolls that have been sitting on open in my room for weeks. I've printed on it without a problem with color. Inkjet paper is not considered light sensitive like old darkroom papers.

      Now you got my curiosity! What exactly were the conditions again?

    • @MedinaCliff
      @MedinaCliff 7 лет назад

      The Printer was sitting with paper ready to print for a few days. The color of the first print was off "cyan tint" and all the others after were fine. Probably a fluke!

    • @cheo1949
      @cheo1949  7 лет назад

      Believe it or not you maybe have had a partial block of magenta and yellow. That will produce an overall cyan tone! Having printed that first print cleared it and the next print now using all colors and was normal. Not at all due to exposures to light.

      Other than just using the included Photo Matte paper P600 own profile there is no actual profile for that paper. You would need to have a custom profile made specifically for it.

    Hey Jose, been watching a lot of your videos, very useful information and you are some expert on the subject, I wanted to know if you could give me a more concrete opinion when the goal is to print colorful(maybe ocasional B&W) aerial/landscape/panoramic photos, do you have a guess on what paper would work best? Also what is the best budget/quality paper print brand you recommend, I mean cost-benefit?

    • @cheo1949
      @cheo1949  7 лет назад

      AH... the question that simply has no answer. Out of the hundreds of papers available, I can not even begin to tell you what the best would be for any subject. Any good semigloss mid to heavy weight paper will produce great results on the type of images you suggest. Currently Red River has very good papers and a very reasonable price. But remember that printing at home and Cost Effective simply do not go together. Other than using cheap papers and inks, you will be giving up to much in terms of overall print quality. But that's just my opinion.

    • @homerdj0nt
      @homerdj0nt 7 лет назад

      I should go for mid weight, anything that would help lower the cost of the printing, as I saw you talking with someone on another video of you, when you're trying to make it a business and sell your prints, the client just don't understand quality, so you must go for price, but I want to do that without compromissing a certain level of quality, just build my "quality standard" at a affordable price, that's why I asked you for a more likely budget photo print paper. Do you think I can go for anything more cheaper than Red River?

    • @homerdj0nt
      @homerdj0nt 7 лет назад

      I get also what you're talking about printing home vs cost effective, but the reality as my calculator says so, with time it will become a good investment. I'm on the road also to buy the printer which should be the P600 or Pixma 100... but as I've been looking into panoramic prints the P600 should be the only way, as it supports paper rolls, also you have an advice on a budget paper roll brand?

    • @cheo1949
      @cheo1949  7 лет назад

      Red River is about the lowest cost there is. If you want to do glossy you can go to COSTCO. They Glossy letter sized paper is like #19 for 150 sheets and it is very good. STAPLES Matte paper is also very good.

    • @cheo1949
      @cheo1949  7 лет назад

      There is no such thing as budget roll paper. You can try ebay for off brands but really there is not way to cheap out when it comes to this. The biggest hassle with the P600 is finding 13" paper in 2" diameter core. They are almost non existent.

  • @paintmonk1
    @paintmonk1 8 лет назад +1

    Very useful info. I ordered the Redriver sample pack and love the polar pearl metallic. One thing though, I notices a few small pinhead size spots flaking off both sample prints. Is this an issue or does this paper just need to be coated with something? I love this paper but I'm selling prints and need it to be durable.

    • @cheo1949
      @cheo1949  8 лет назад

      I wish I could say. I do not use too many metallic papers. I would directly contact Red River and just ask them. I remember just recently there being a batch of some RR paper that had a few tiny blemishes and they segregated the bad sheets and sold them as seconds by the pack. I would not think Metallic Paper would suffer from flakes coming off. It might just be a few bad sheets that got into that sample pack. Contact them, they will help you out.

      I had the Canon 9500 Mark II and the first time I printed a canvas, strictly following the directions using the rear tray, etc., it jammed and had to take it in for service. (that printer has since died for some other reason that I can't figure out and ,at some point, I'd like to pick your brain on) I recently bought the Pro 10 with the hope that I could print small canvases. I really want to try it with this one, but I'm SCARED to death to try it again. I saw where you printed an 8 x 10 canvas with the Pro 100 from the "normal" tray with no problem. (I was cringing when I saw it.)

    • @cheo1949
      @cheo1949  7 лет назад

      Actually it was an 11x17 and I used the regular feed tray. That is as fast as I have gone with the canons and canvas. By the way I also have 9500 that is dead! And I mean dead!
