I think everyone really clung onto his positivity he had no matter what, like literally nothing phased this dude, I think we all wish we could be like sanjaya when faced with adversity, he was so freaking happy the whole time, I think it was much less about his singing ability

His studio download of this song was actually pretty good. I know it's easy to say, well, it's easy to get it right in the studio. But he totally nailed it in the studio! I only wish he could have brought more of that to the live performance that night. I've actually come to love it better than Bonnie Riatt's version; it's bouncy and catchy and Sanjaya's voice does it justice. I know this wasn't his best AI performance by a long shot. But check out the Mp3 version; it rocks!
you are right! American Idol is just not completely abou t singing, it about the entertainment. Sanjaya was a good entertainer, young , dynamic and most importantly he had the guts to try something different everytime. just imagine being in his shoes at his age infront of everyone and knowing that Simon and other judges do not like him, he always tried to do his best. i think this was an okay performance but the vocals were not that good, but sanjaya has soul and loves to sing, and thats why he stayed in so long, not because he is an okay singer but because he has soul and loves to sing and is a great and charming guy

I don't like to see people get their feelings hurt, especially on national television. But I just watched this performance and I have to agree with Simon, it really was awful. It was a weak performance with weak vocals. There was nothing unique or special in the slightest. Even before he went on, you could see the concern on Bonnie Raitt's face. It was like if you grabbed someone (who can reasonably sing) off the street and asked them to sing on the spot; it could not have been more lackluster. And yes, maybe part of it is the song choice. But for someone who beat out thousands to get into the spotlight on a show watched by millions, he really dropped the ball here. This was the opposite of spectacular, and you really have to be spectacular to remain in a competition of such a magnitude as American Idol.
the only reason i looked up this video was to see Simon completely rip this kid. something about sanjayas face just made me wanna hit it. and i NEVER say that ever. Ryan was trying to keep the peace because he thought Simon was getting a little out of line. granted he was, but it was still awesome.
