Who cares if the crew was a bit chatty. Thank you all for a great ride through an amazing landscape and thank those that built this marvel of cutting through stone. A truly great video, a great ride and our sincere thanks for your efforts!
Spec tac u lar! Thanks so much for sharing! The effort needed to build railroads in those ranges in Greece, Montenegro and other adjacent locations shows amazing dedication.
Yes the crew were loud, BUT, they did not have to allow anyone in the cab, they did it out of the goodness of their hearts and I for one enjoyed the video even with the banter. Better to hear it than sit watching a silent video other than a bit of tyre screeching once in a while. Very well made.
a note from a local: Usually it is forbidden for tourists to enter the driver's cabin, BUT many drivers are kind enough to allow it. Plz understand it is their working place and they are free to discuss staff matters, or about the certain matters in their interest. It is NOT part of their duty, to shut their mouth whenever they are kind to allow anyone with a simple fare to enter the driver;s cabin. There are many videos shot by themselves in solitude where they don't speak. This has nothing to do with rudeness or unpolite behavior. Plz next time you comment bear this in mind. Thank you.
I certainly appreciated their kindness in inviting me in, and actually their chatter did not disturb me at all. I stretched my very little Greek to thank them properly.
titup2 Please don't misunderstand me. I greatly enjoy drivers eye view videos and this one was very good. However, when a camera is taking a video along a line, those in the cab 'should' respect that and keep conversation to a minimum and lower the volume. I did NOT intend to insult anybody.
The comments by the crew are great, part of the experience. Were the iron wheels to loud also? How kind of you to share your adventure with us. I wish my Father had lived long enough to experience the world of You Tube. He did at least make it to Greece before his 83 years ended, his PhD in the Classics gave him the ability to read and speak Classical Greek, although quite different from what is spoken now. I realize how lucky I am to live in San Diego County, so much of this looks like it is here
This is totally awesome. If I might inquire how many men and how long did it take to build this railroad? I took interest in all the retaining walls that hold up this line and all the tunnels and overhanging rock outcroppings. This is so impressive to say the least. Very well done too. Great photography.
Grat movie! Sure, the crew can talk all they want! I did a lot of cab-rides and never had problems with that. I allways warned the guys that the clip will be posted on RUclips and to take care of gossiping about the bosses!!! BTW, in the tunnel (4:21) is a branch tunnel to the right that leads to the bridge. Is that an abandoned spur?
The steep parts of the line operate on the rack and pinion, the rack being the toothed line that you are referring to and the pinion a gear-wheel fixed on the drive axle under the engine; this prevents the train from running free downhill and it drives the train uphill avoiding wheel-slip.
Now a question I'm fairly sure no one asked. What is the fishing like in that gorge area? All of those little pools next to little waterfalls one after another. Too old now to even consider doing that now but in my younger days...............
Am I correct that the only parts of the Peloponnese Rail System still operating are this tourist line and the Pirgos-Olympia line? I did travel both ways from Patras - Olympia and Patras-Corinth, plus Corinth-Nafplion in the 1970s. It was great! Plus the Akropolis Express Munich-Athens with bicycles in the guardsvan. Those were the days. Neglecting railways and motorising a country with miles of dual carriage toll roads is a cheap and environmentally crap way of getting quick economic growth. The Greece I see now is unrecognisable.
At one point it was calculated that it would be cheaper to get taxis for all the passengers rather than run trains round the Peloponnese. Nevertheless, they are in the process of rebuilding a twin-track electrified line from Athens to Patras; so far you can get as far as Kiato. Much more has been laid but not yet electrified and at the moment they are relaying the section around Patras which until recently was still running as a sort of commuter line from the outer suburbs at each end. The line from Katakolo to Olympia only runs when cruise ships come in; there is no regular service.
@@titup2 Great - thanks for the latest on the situation. I can imagine it will be rebuilt completely at some point with more services. Still the old slow trains were lovely. There seems to be a very strong community of train lovers in Greece who want to see it happen. All the best David.
Ich denke Sie deutsch sind (ich spreche nicht gut deustch, entschuldigung). Es ist ein Zug in Griechenland, im Nord Peloponese, von Diakopto bis Kalavryta. Ich hoffe Sie verstehen...
get off where? In Triklia?? there is nothing there, nothing, nothing, nothing to do and nowhere to go.....it is just a meeting point for trains, a halt, not a station.....
I had problem with that music. It never occurred to me but I apparently breached copyright and the vid was blocked until the music was properly acknowledged.

I recently returned from living eight years in Diakofto! This gorge was my nature walk. If you visit the area you will not be disappointed . Terence)

Fantastic looking rockscape stabling along this line .. such foresight :sigh:
Just found this. Incredible.
Me encantan esos parajes solitarios y esas rocas imponentes. Pero esos dos angelitos que conversan no dejan que uno se concentre en el paisaje 😃
What I fantastic ride ;;))
love Polska

ok, visitor! My comment is addressed mainly to other comentators below. I have read your description!
coś wspaniałego, dałbym jednak więcej gdyby nie brakowało stacji początkowej. Pozdrawiam
Incredible !
Yes, the crew were loud, but I felt so lucky to be invited up front that I could hardly tell them to shut up.

I think John Coyle isn't built to understand the Greek temperament. Talk about culture clash. Ha ha ha. A good hairwash with olive oil is required.
magnifique !!!!!!!!!

Breathtaking. Glad i'm not the driver
Beautiful scenery and very precarious route. What skill achieved Many Many years ago.?

Sorry, but I know no more than Wikipedia gives. Of course, it was originally steam-hauled, and there are films on RUclips of just that.
+Robert Bowman www.odontotos.com/index-en.htm this gives some information.
+titup2 thanks. That's useful addition.
it took 5 years to built and cost about 1 billion $ in 2000 AD money
Spectacular.

9:55 crossing of trains (edited)
No crossing. It was out of season and they only had the one train shuttling up and down. They stopped to let a friend get off.

Nevertheless, somebody got off.
this is a case, one in a million!!!!! Lucky you!
Look carefully and you can see his reflection in the windscreen as he gets off.

It is a conversation that has no relevance to the train ride!!
Hey you, in the background, you need to be quiet.
was a good vid until the radio music started.
I had problem with that music. It never occurred to me but I apparently breached copyright and the vid was blocked until the music was properly acknowledged.
Odd. I have just now spotted that the acknowledgement of the music has disappeared. Not my doing!
A LOUD CONVERSATION ruined an otherwise good video!
***** If only you knew how funny those things they say are. :P
