- Could this be the killer of ceramic kamados? On this video, I'll review the Golden's Cast-Iron Kamado, and then put it to the test by smoking a 12.83-pound beef brisket. Spoiler alert... This cast-iron kamado is awesome! www.goldenscas... . It is built like a tank, but it's also super easy to use. It held my target temp for hours with very little management, and it stayed hot up through the next morning. This cast-iron kamado grill is built to last and I'm sure my future grandkids will enjoy cooking for their families on it!

Ballistic BBQ being cast iron does the outside surface not get very hot?
Thank you 🙏
I think your viewers have slowed their website to a crawl.
@@skyterrapin It gets as about as hot as the inside. On a 250 cook, you can still touch the outside briefly without burning yourself. When you're searing at 550, you don't want to touch it!
@@johnboyd2138 Have you owned a ceramic kamado and would you suggest using one over the other?
That grill is a beast and that brisket turned out amazing, but I think my favorite part was that look on your face. This is a new favorite of yours, I can tell. Great video man
Cheers Justin!
Have you tried this smoker too? Would like to know your opinion as well.
@@scottquinn9734 I have not, but I've talked to Greg about it extensively. Seems like a nice cooker.
Greg that is one bad a&& kamado, but I'm not telling you anything you don't already know. Loved the sitting on the shelf clip! I think it's built like a battleship brother! Amazing job on the brisket and overall fantastic video! Cheers! 🍻
Thank you Rusty! Cheers brother
We're proud to have Greg Mrvich review our Goldens' Cast Iron product! We hope you enjoy it as much as Greg and we can't wait to see more amazing recipes! Thanks Greg! Great review!
Now this is what we used to make! 100% last you a life time product. Great job Greg, thank you and the same to Goldens cast iron!
Good afternoon all, I have one of these cookers. I have had mine for 4 years now and it is still an awesome cooker. I am replacing my felt this year, but other then that there is no general upkeep. The inside has become seasoned like an old cast iron skillet and I love it!! I have not even bothered to try and keep inside the dome clean. I clean my grates and my sear plate. If you get one you will love it and will never have to worry about it cracking should last a lifetime!!
Thanks for sharing! I suspected that based on my experience with cast iron grates, but four years of ownership holds a lot of clout!
Nice review. I've owned mine for 3 years, no problems at all and a fantastic investment. I've posted many of my cooks on the bbq brethren forum. Enjoy your new Golden's and congrats on the purchase.
I had a question i was told the spring cant be replaced if it breaks is that true. Im sure that lid must be heavy without s spring assist.
Ok, so it took me a while but I found a store in the Netherlands where they sell this thing and my piggy bank is gonna be filled for this. I've got a regular grill and a Traeger and I still wanted a kamado. I've been looking at the different brands but then this review came along and I love the fact that it's cast iron and basically indestructible. Thanks for your review Greg! Your enthusiasm for this cooker really comes across so you're either for real or a really good salesman lol! Once again, love the look of this thing.
"must be jelly, jam don't shake that way" lol nice one Greg.
Kept waiting to hear the Tim "The Tool-Man" Taylor *GRUNT* during the explanation of this grill. :0)
I edited the grunts out. Thanks for watching!
Hey Greg! Greetings from Germany, great video! Cheers and please keep it up!
Thanks for watching Karl!
That thing is solid. I love it. Next stimulus check 🤘🏼
You just cost me a bunch of money sir....excellent video, I'm sold.
The fact that it's made in the USA, I'm sold on it.
rolly doucet Absolutely. Chinese manufacturing does not contend when it comes to cast iron. Looks like a beast of a cooker!!
@@robapple78 The problem is, US based companies go over to China to get stuff made as cheaply as possible. and the Chinese manufacturers deliver exactly what was asked for.....the cheapest crap on the market. Good stuff ain't cheap, and cheap stuff ain't good.
Robert .Applegate It should for $1700. No way am I that serious about grilling to spend that much.
@@LB-kr5ku The Golden’s cooker, while not cheap, is priced competitively with ceramic kamados while delivering the advantages of cast iron. They now offer a smaller 14 inch kamado at a much lesser price point. Best of luck in all your grilling!
I was between this and the blaze kamado. I think this video may set me over the edge fore the Goldens
That cooker looks awesome! Like you said, that should last for generations.
Man I’ve never been enthralled with the idea of a ceramic kamado. However, this cast iron idea for a Kamado style, I find quite alluring. If I ever do take the plunge into Kamado cooking, this will be a top contender fir my choice.
Hi Greg, I've enjoyed your video with Guga Foods recently and was wondering if you still use the Golden's Cast Iron Kamado. Does the cooking grate and innards rust? I know San Diego is pretty dry, so you it might not be an issue for you. Just curious. Thanks!
Wow. This thing looked/looks very promising... I’m solely a kettle guy!! I.e. price variance but damn it man. Wow!!!!! Yes steaks pleas please please. Haha.
Steaks are great from these. I have had mine for 3 years now and I don't order steak at restaurants anymore because it's so much better at home.
Wow what a cooker! I will def check them out ! Thanks Greg! Stay safe!
Hey man, I'm glad someone has reviewed this Kamado. I own the Blaze cast aluminum kamado (which I love) and have been eyeballing this as a 2nd one. Great review and the brisket turned out well.
Most everything happens for a reason. The commotion turned the attention back to that cooker. And what a cooker it looks to be. I wonder how the clean-up will be. inside and out. The upkeep. Good stuff. Enjoyed the late in the day video release. Cheers!
Very true. Clean-out is pretty much the same as my ceramic kamados. Open the lower damper and rake out the charcoal. Other than that, just give the grates a good brushing and you're good to go. The outside finish is all-weather, but I like to cover my cookers.
Cheers
Are you at all worried about the inside rusting over time given that it's all cast iron I would wonder if you have to season the inside
@@umbracus I've been cooking on mine for 2 years. The inside shows no signs of rust. It seasons (like a skillet) with all the goodness from what your cooking.
To hell with some brisket! Get that anywhere. Best on my smoking deck. Let’s see good neighborhood fight! CA brawl as good as TX style. Lol 😂 Looks tasty as always. Does exterior of Golden get warm/hot/stay back kids hot??? Looks like it will eventually get like your favorite cast iron cookware.
LOL! It would probably get the views! Cheers! It wasn't hot, but not uncomfortably hot.
@@BallisticBBQ it wasn't hot but not uncomfortably hot?
Dear Santa; Listen, I KNOW it isn't the season for you to be concerned about what some old you tube creator out in the wilds of Nebraska wants... BUT... BRING ME ONE OF THESE cast iron Komado cookers NOW!!! Here, I was convinced that 5 grills was enough... It's not. I'll bet we get a wiff of something great, wafting in the air when we visit Yuma this Summer, if the wind is just right, that is.
Dude. Outstanding video. Truly outstanding! Exceptional review, cook and summary. Golden’s is lucky to have you representing them. Cheers, brother! 🍻
I have had mine for a few months and have used it a lot. Made in USA in the great state of Georgia and I love it.
The only thing missing from your channel is a free sample button, that brisket looked great.
Man that pit is AMAZING!!! Keep up the great videos brother! That grill will last multiple lifetimes. Smoke on!!!
I have had my eye on one of these for a few months now... found them because I was looking to see what BBQ company still made their BBQ grills here in the US... and these guys came up... AND they were one of the few that did come up. I may get one in the future.. just can't do it right now.
It's definitely worth saving up for. I went from a portable gas flat top to this and elevated my cooking to previously (for me) unknown levels. If it helps you to get one quicker you can always get it without the cart.
I've been waiting for a prevalent BBQ YT'er to review one of these, there's no content out for it, thanks!
Thank you for stopping by. I first saw this at an expo in Vegas a couple of years ago. I was very impressed with the company and this cooker is outstanding!

Here's our Goldens' Cast Iron YT channel...not independently reviewed obviously but some good stuff.
I haven’t produced any content for YT but my Instagram account has a lot of pictures of my Golden’s Cast Iron Cooker and the food it cooks.
Excellent review. With cast iron, question about internal rusting. Does the Komodo come preseasons? Is seasoning required on a maintenance basis? In my opinion, this limado is superior to ceramic in so many aspects! Follow your channel religiously ✌🏻.
I have had my Golden’s Cast Iron kamado for almost 4 years. I’ve had no rust on the inside of the cooker yet. If I were to use a grill cover I wouldn’t have any on the outside either. The grates and smoker plate come preseasoned at the factory but you will need to season them on a regular basis. My local Golden’s dealer suggested that I cook something very fatty like a pork butt to help season my grill.
I’ve been eyeballing these for a couple of years and this is the first video I’ve seen of one being used. I love the heritage of the Goldens company and I love even more that they cast everything themselves. I’m seriously considering getting one eventually. I just bought a PK 360 but mistakenly thought that we’re made in USA when in fact the 360 is made in China, but I am I’m enjoying it. I also have the Kamado Big Joe so I’m curious if you think you’ll still be using your ceramic grills now that you have the Golden. Maybe when you get some more time on it you can let us know how the two styles compare to each other.
"Must be jelly, because jam don't shake." Ah yes I see you're also a man of culture. This cooker is a beast!
Looks like a great cooker, my only concern here in the north would be all that cast iron living outside.
That thing looks like something kept in in the vaults of Moria.
Can imagine the fellowship coming across one and going 'Screw that ring, we have more calling matters at hand!'.
This grill is a monster.Cook anything on it,no gimmicks.
That cooker looks amazing! Would love to get let loose on that thing. Lucky, lucky man Greg.
Another great video, that 13 lb. brisket cooked pretty fast - 8 hours at 250? keep the great content coming!
I did a 16lb prime brisket in 6 hours on my Golden's Cast Iron cooker. The first 3 hours were at 350°F then I bumped it down to 250°F. It was my first ever prime and/or hot brisket. My family and friends were impressed.
That's an incredible cooker there, Greg.
Man that's a nice cooker! I've been wanting to buy a ceramic cooker and I was almost ready to buy...until you decided to release this video!👍🏼
This thing is awesome brother!
Joe we have similar tastes in smokers. I'm gonna bet you were leaning towards the Kamado Joe big Joe with the slow roller. If I were to get a kamado, that's what I would get. Not sure a kamado offers that much benefit compared to my weber kettle with SNS, but kamado cookers sure look nice.
She's a beauty of a cooker man. 👍
I’ve been thinking of adding a Kamado to my cooker collection and just came across this one yesterday. Was hoping I could find some reviews or videos, glad I cam across yours. Great video and it was very helpful!
Brisket 👍 Made in USA👍 another amazing cook by Greg from Ballistic BBQ 👍👍👍
LOL! Cheers Brother-Brian!
$2000, pass
Excellent review. The brisket looked fantastic. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching Johnny!
I love seeing Serg Tankian running the kamado like a pro.
Why'd you leave your keys upon the table?
Thanks for the shot of the Angel's flyover, I missed that somehow.
What happened someone get swat teamed for not social distancing??
LOL! "Come out with your hands up and your mask on!"
Stay safe buddy. Love your videos..
Great looking cooker. I love the fact I’m getting Traeger ads during the video...lol, not exactly the same market. Cheers from the Jersey Shore.
That is super cool. Never heard of a cast kamado before. Thanks for another awsome vid Greg🖒🖒
Absolutely beautiful cooker. But way too rich for my blood!!!!
Golden’s does make a smaller 14 inch kamado at a much lower price point. You can also get the big cooker with a smaller cart or without a cart.
Not sure what is the purpose of using cast iron. Why can’t have cast iron cooking surface and rest of it is made out of steel or aluminum. CI is susceptible to rust and corrosion and it is extremely heavy. Also it is brittle compared to other metals. So it can crack or break at weak points.
I want one ….. trying to evaluate replacing or complimenting my large BGE. My only comment and concern is I wish is was larger, like 24”.
Greg: I’m looking to buy a larger home.
Real Estate Agent: Why would you like to have a larger home.
Greg: My backyard isn’t large enough for all of my outdoors grilles.
LOL! The herd needs a little culling!
Are these porcelain coated or raw iron that needs to be seasoned?
Can't wait to get mine!!
For $1700 Made in the beautiful 🇺🇸 USA, can’t beat it.
I have a question doesn't the heat deflector cause to much heat. because it's made of cast iron rather then one made of ceramic for the low and slow.
And can you put under the grill an aluminum tray with water for replacing the moisture.
Or is there no space for that.
Greets from Holland
Sorry to much talking and patting of cooker literally 50% of video
Great looking cooker and better made than my go too...chargriller akorn....
When not cooking it could be used as a bomb shelter. Great video
Diggin the new cooker man. Reverse sear would be cool along with some fusion food like maybe thai and so can flavors
Great suggestion!
Excellent review Greg. Couldn't agree more about multi generational cookers. Exactly why I picked up my LSG.
Gotta' love LSGs!
I know this probably not the best time to do this, and I think I've mentioned in a video before, but I think you and Sam The Cooking Guy would be such a good collaboration. You're very tight and neat while Sam is kind of whacky and free balls a lot. I think it'd be a great contrast for a video. Kind of like a odd couple thing. Idk. Plus you guys are both from San Diego! Make it happen once this Covid bullshit is over!
Oh yeah you both like drinking haha
Think i just saw greg on a police youtube video!
Great video. Would love to see your charcoal and hardwood set-up for keeping a consistent temp!
I’ve had mine for almost 4 years and it maintains temperature extremely well. I always get my fire fully involved and then use the bottom and top vents to bring the temp down to the desired level. I always use a lump charcoal and sometimes some wood chunks if I’m smoking.
Always good brotha.
What a great video. So much information, I feel I could buy it and almost do a cook without any more research. When you were wrapping the brisket I kept hoping to receive it as a present. Happy birthday to your son, I didn’t know yours and his birthdays were 1 week apart. Cheers.
Cheers Paul!
unless the cooker comes with the planes aswell i will be disappointed.
This will be replacing my big green egg soon. I'm sick of the lid becoming misaligned and parts cracking.
I feel you pain there brother!
If they made an oval shaped one i would totally buy one right now. What an amazing bbq
crazyjd64 I believe Primo has a patent to an oval grill design.
@@dcentral yea I've been looking to grab one once my regular one cracks or something. I just love the cast iron design
I'm happy to see an in depth review of the Golden's Kamado. I've been somewhat enamored with them since seeing one on display at the National Cornbread Festival about three years ago. Among many other grills / smokers I've owned three ceramic Kamados. The Golden's is definitely appealing , especially after this review.
It looks like there are less air holes in the fire bowl than in a traditional Kamado. It would be great to see how hot it can get at full blast.
Again, it's great to see a good review of the Golden's Kamado.
I'll cranking it up for you Keith. I'm waiting to see how hot it will get as well.
I got over 1000°F in mine one time to get a very nice sear on USDA Prime ribeyes. I had 1st degree burns on my arms through the next week but the steak was worth it!
That is very impressive, and so awesome. Cheers, Greg!
I got my Golden's Cast Iron Kamado cooker 3 years ago. It has been an amazingly tough and versatile machine. I have done everything from 150°F cold smoking of a salt cured pork butt to 1000°F searing on USDA prime ribeyes. Hot dogs, hamburgers, smoked chicken, BBQ pork, pizza, and Mexican style trompos taste better(or are just possible at all for me) with this grill. If you are looking for the combination of toughness and versatility in your outdoor cooking then I can highly recommend the Goldens Cast Iron cooker!
Can we get a yard tour? I mean you must have 10+ Bbqs by now? Or how you handle their storage?
I'll be doing a tour as soon as my construction project is finished. That fence behind me literally wraps around the bottom of the deck you see in most of my videos. I have two gates where I can place and remove cookers from under my deck. This keeps them out of sight!
2 questions: Do you have to keep your grates seasoned (I own an Akorn)? and What about keeping the kamado in a rust prone area (will it rust badly)?
Hi Daniel, The kamado itself is coated with a very high-quality powder coating, so we're good there. The grates and defuser do need to be maintained like any cast iron. I use grape seed oil to season. In very wet areas, I would store the grate in the garage or something with a nice coating of cooking oil.
$1,699.99. You can thank me later.
Just got my Golden's Cast Iron Cooker about 10 days ago and it is one of the best purchases I've ever made. Seriously. I have no doubt this is the last grill/smoker/cooker I'll ever have to buy and my son already knows he's getting it! I've already made whole chickens, butts and reverse seared Filet. I've been smoking for the last 6 years on a number of different setups and this cooker made the best of everything I've ever done. The filet was award winning, bringing it up low and slow, then searing it on the searing plate with bacon grease and drizzling some garlic cloves & rosemary sprig butter on it. Unbelievable. Quick request on future videos of this cooker; can you also please show your bottom vent setting? Great video and great looking brisket!
That thing is built like a tank...👍👍
Looks like this video was about four years ago & you live in a tropical climate. How has the grill held up to rust? Any issues over the last four years?
No rust at all on the cooker. The only thing that needs to be tended to is the grates. It is very important to maintain the seasoning on the grates, or they will rust.
I wanted to know your opinion on this kamado. I have one years experience on a Costco Louisiana kamado 24”. And to be honest other than you can’t really shut it down to conserve lump, as it has so many leaks from the cap to the lower vent. I am ready for a premium kamado to buy. My grill I was leaning towards was the Primo XL400. But I have to admit I do like the Golden’s cast iron. My main question is how do you remove that bowl to clean the ash buildup. And what is your opinion on the two vs each other.
Greg, did you somehow sneak out with one of Aaron's lunch trays?
LOL! I was waiting for this! Actually, my sister gave me the tray, along with Aaron's book for my birthday a couple of years ago. She bought both of them by the way!
@@BallisticBBQ I also have his book. I was just kidding, of course. In your previous profession, I'm sure you were tuned in to notice things that a lot of other people wouldn't.
Very impressive build quality on that. One of the few cookers out there that is probably bullet proof! :) I will definitely check them out.
Can't help but think that it gets scalding hot to the touch on the outside.
That Kamado is badass 💪🇺🇸 If you don’t love it, leave it, USA #1💪🇺🇸
Think they need to step there host website up we killed.
I agree
@@BallisticBBQ We're in the process of doing that today. Thanks for crashing us! :)
Not sure if you're showing us brisket, or advertising this BBQ and telling us to buy it.
11:51 holy CRAP that is a GREAT use of your franklin's tray! i was wearing my franklin's shirt just yesterday and now i am gonna have to go back to buy a tray (or online, but that's boring)
Ur videos are awesome you are the burger man. I have a Kamado joe already but would love to add that cast iron beast to my arsenal. My question is how is the clean out system and will a kick ash basket fit in there? By the way your al pastor Marinade on the pk grill is Amazing still my go to marinade
HOLY cow. That must of been fun getting it off the truck. I don't see myself hauling it around to events much. I think I'll wait awhile before going for this one.
Thanks for doing the review and sharing.
I'm pretty sure that the wheels are the same as rail carts
That cooker looked amazing Greg! I will have to check it out, nice cook brother!
I don't like the wheel situation on this thing
only wish it had a steel gasket rather than the felt one. i know felts are the original (my costco kamado is the 1st version and has felt that needs replacing) BUT the new costco pit boss kamado is using the metal gasket ala kamado joes
Great video on this cooker….amazing brisket looked delicious!!!
This is an awesome video, thank you! I just got a Golden's Cast Iron and wondering if you have any videos on how to get it ready for a low and slow smoke (ie, when to start closing the dampers, etc)?
If you overshoot temps with this, does it adjust back down faster than a ceramic or about the same?
It's a lot like ceramic when it comes to thermodynamics. I haven't exceeded my target my very high numbers but based on how well this retains heat, best tactic is to not go too far your target temp,
Isn't the benefit of the ceramic kamados that they're super efficient? And only need a small fire grate?
Hey Greg, I need your opinion. Golden’s vs weber summit Kamado? I finally have enough to get a really nice cooker, and I’m conflicted. What’s your opinion?
I've never cooked on a Weber Summit, but I know that Justin at Baby Baby Maniac likes his. I can tell you that the Golden's will last a lifetime, I'm not sure many other kamados will. Sorry if this wasn't any help. I dig the Golden's and will be putting out some new content soon.
@@BallisticBBQ Just received my Goldens Cooker. Your Information-packed vid is what helped me with the final decision. Thanks. One question; What's you opinion about the skewed lower damper? Looks Weird!
I am impressed! 🇺🇸👍👍
