Still, over ten years after the fact, i love to watch these videos and reminisce about these awesome seven days in 2010 we spent aboard this ship. That's me at 1:45 messing with the TV set in the lounge. Would give anything to go again..... It was indeed a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us six.
Scott, is your family connected in any way to the Arthur M. Anderson freighter, which gave you special permission to go on the Tregurtha? I ask this with the utmost respect 😔
My mom and dad went all over the world cruising on freighters lol they loved it. Perfect accommodations nice service very few passengers it was great...
The Great Lakes freighters inspired me as a boy to join the Navy, where I served for 10 years. This new breed of ship is just amazing... would love to sail on her and experience being at sea again!
Small observation. The guy watching TV at the end of the video was watching Goodfellas. Specifically the part where Henry Hill hears about the Lufthansa heist. Ohhhh Jimmmy!!!
This series of videos aboard the Paul R Tregurtha are amazing. Watching similar ships sail through the St Lawrence Seaway, I've always wondered what life is like aboard them. Thanks you for showing us.
There are travel agencies you can go through that could probably get you on a great lakes freighter for under 1000. Don't need to be rich to afford that
Nice and cozy living quarters. For some reason I didn’t expect that on the longest freighter on the Great Lakes. I’ve seen too many pirate movies....I have to snap out of it.
I worked on board the PRT for inter-lake steam ship as roving maintenance for the fleet.they did not have any open rooms down below with the crew so i had to stay up in the owners room the best view & the food was awesome while on board
LOL. The space on a surface ship is unbelievable, I could not believe the size of the galley. One of the comments was "you couldn't pay me to go on a cruise." Ironically more people would have paid big bucks to submerge just once on the Jefferson, my old sub. Kind of unique.
I've often wondered how dose that work when you depart from the Navy and you decide to go into the merchant shipping trade is there any kind of special training involved for such a transition?
Was watching the Smithsonian Channel, Mighty Ships, the Paul R Tregurtha was featured, first run of the season, going through heavy ice, the ice punched a hole through her hull, the ship was layed up for a week until it was repaired.
I didn't know lake freighters even had guest rooms. The guest quarters seem about like small 2 bed hotel rooms. Interesting that the schedule (if I read it right) seems to put the whole trip extending over 2 nights.
Good. Good. Good video. Years agod (decades past, actually), I had heard about someone who traveled on a freighter. He preferred it to crossing the ocean on a passenger ship.
This would be a great trip! I guess as a Canuck I probably couldn't - but maybe Canadian lake freighters offer the same. I've also been looking into container ship voyages across the Pacific and Atlantic, which obviously are a lot longer, like three weeks or more.
Hi. Im a fellow Canuck and I’m wondering if you had any success finding passenger accommodations on freighters crossing the Atlantic. I’ve been keen to go to Europe by sea but cruise ships aren’t for me. Please let me know. 👍
West or is that Left Coast Canuckian.. Anyway, I was told a few years ago by a travel agent friend, that to hop onto a Container Ship, you have to contact the shipping agents directly to see which are available, although with Covid the rules have changed.. I had a friend back years ago, he essentially travelled around the World but I cannot remember how long or the cost. . But it is doable..
That looks awesome!! ❤ I would so love to be able to stay on a Great Laker!! How long can one stay aboard?? I absolutely love how it sounds!🥰 I'd fall asleep so fast aboard any Great Laker!@ Very awesome video!! Thank you so much for sharing! How i would have loved to have been able to stay on the Edmund Fitzgerald!!! ❤❤❤
If you don't mind me asking how did you arrange passage on this vessel, I didn't know they took passengers on a commercial ship like that. And why do they take passengers?
One of my fathers cousins was the cook on the Edmund Fitzgerald (rip) and was sick with pneumonia and home when she sank in that November storm in the early 70's...he was saddened by this right up to the day he died....the lake has one hell of a history in November...gut check kind of stuff...
Very cozy interior, looks like a decent hotel room from the 70s. Idk why someone is a guest on a ship like that with views like that and they are just watching TV nonstop. Lol I would be looking out all sides and different windows and roaming around as far as theyd let me looking at the scenery.
I can't believe I'm the first person out of over 900 who's commenting. I would love to be a passenger on this freighter as I see it so often near my home in Marine City. I had no idea it was so lavishly appointed inside. I'd be in that lounge 24/7 and also would rarely watch the TV. How were you able to be a passenger, win one of those oh so infrequent "win a trip" lotteries?
Got caught in some kind of rogue wind out of nowhere east of Cabo San Lucas Mexico. We were fishing for sail fish on the Pacific side of the cape In about two thousand feet of water. I am not a sailor .Over a period of about ten minutes the sea went from friendly to deadly with ten foot waves. We were in a thirty foot twin Diesel fishing boat chartered out of Cabo. The waves kept pushing the boat side ways until they were breaking over the side of the boat one after the other. I was scared fishless. As I remember back, the captain, who was maybe twenty didn't seem to get the idea that we could sink if the boat got hit broadside by a large rogue wave. There were no other boats within sight. He and the first mate(?) sat up on the fly bridge smoking and laughing. We caught one ten pound yellow tuna. We did not tip the captain or the first mate. In my opinion we were lucky to get back to port alive.
I thought many freighters offered passenger accommodation but you have to know whom to ask. I had a friend travel from New Zealand to Sydney on a container ship and it took 2 weeks.
I know these are old but i'm in the process of getting my MMC Card than hoping to work on the PRT someday. I was hoping to win one of the raffles :( but didn't but oh well hoping i'll be on the Great Lakes soon.
Eh, more like a few days. The raffle he won takes you on one round trip at which point you leave the ship and go back home. Still very cool, just not for very long
I worked for Inter-lake steamship & was on board when it ran aground that day. we were stuck for several hours we ballasted it & got off the rocks, we then took it to Sturgeon Bay WI for repair put a gash in the bow about 20 foot by 10 foot we sent divers down with video cameras
@@josephinebennington7247 I think you had to be invited to be a guest most likely a vip or friends of someone from Interlake. Or the great lakes maritime museum has given away 4-5 day cruises every year. And this ship has been one that has been featured on the raffle

Did you have to pay to come aboard?
Scott.. you didn’t make your bed 🛌 😂
Why did you get to go on the ship?
How much does this cost?
Scott, is your family connected in any way to the Arthur M. Anderson freighter, which gave you special permission to go on the Tregurtha? I ask this with the utmost respect 😔
You couldn't pay me to take a cruise, but I would love to cross the Great Lakes on one of those ships!
Really get the scope of the size crossing in a ship
I absolutely enjoyed my time on Royal Carribean Freedom of the Seas.
I would love a three to seven day cargo trip on Great Lakes
Me too
I agree, doing some work sounds like good exchange for a trip without drunk obnoxious partyers or screaming kids running around deck.
My mom and dad went all over the world cruising on freighters lol they loved it. Perfect accommodations nice service very few passengers it was great...
I have never seen the insides of a Laker. Found this fascinating, thanks for sharing. I would love to travel on a big ship someday.
Love to see these ships my father sailed 37 years on the great lakes thanks Dad miss you.
That's incredible. That is better than cruise ship accommodations.
Boring
Mystic Wine I think you spelt wine wrong. Believe it should be whine.
@@donnebes9421 whine is just looking for a response and looking for some crackers and cheese to eat
WOW despite their appearance the largest Great Lakes freighter is more luxurious than it looks.

rather go on this than those carnival cruises. wish I was rich to ride on a lake steamer...
Royal Carribean is way better...

That ship looks like it would be warm and comfortable in the winter on the Great Lakes.
Very cool. Thanks for the tour.
My husband is a former merchant marine and I would love to be able to give him a cruise on the Great Lakes.
I did a many years of haze gray and underway on a US Navy destroyer, I'd love to spend some time on this ship!

Just saw this ship pass through the Detroit river yesterday! Got some awesome pictures of it.
I'd go, but not in November!
Still gives me chills
I'd love to go in November. Be up on the bridge as they game-plan around the weather. Maybe enjoy a longer trip than 5 or 6 days
She's Just A Beautiful Freighter!!
Paul R Tregurtha serves two purposes: one is to haul freight as any Great Lakes freighter does, and the second is to transport Executive Passengers.
Awesome video! Always considered a job on a freighter...however, I have the second best job on the Detroit river and get to watch them pass by.

tim mayer ok, but what’s that got to do with this video of the staterooms? Just curious.
Nobody really cares Tim
I wish he had gone out onto the back deck so we could see the back of the ship as it’s moving
Reminds me of the Ernie Kovacs gag: "Thank you for inviting us into your home tonight. But couldn't you have cleaned it up a little?"
Marvellous!
That was a very nice tour. I love to cook and bake and l would not pass an opportunity to cook on a Great Lakes freighter.
1 day i would love to sail on one of these one can hope
I am surprised that these ships are so chopped up inside, seems like a lot of doorways and narrow halls to go through in an emergency.
Beautiful ship she is.
Honestly for how much you can hear the engines from the exterior watching them enter or exit Duluth, I thought they would be louder
Wish you could buy passage on a laker just to sail and watch like some ocean going freighters allow.
I thought many freighters offered passenger accommodation but you have to know whom to ask. I had a friend travel from New Zealand to Sydney on a container ship and it took 2 weeks.
Very cool. Great video. I just "SUBSCRIBED" to your AWESOME channel.

How is it like and will I have to go to school to become a deckhand
It sucks. Its like being in prison with a chance to drown
I need to know how you can get to stary on one of these ships
Is this a "one way" cruise?
You are very lucky
Just like rooms in an upper class house. The only thing missing was a cuckoo clock in the TV lounge room.
Wow. Impressive
I also would rather spend time on a great lakes freighter than a crowded "fancy" cruise ship!
What does one have to do to be a guest on that ship?
