I believe it has to do with John having trouble with people who don't listen to music because of the relationship between the heart/soul/mind and the force of music The interviewer obviously listened to their album cause that was his job before he interviewed them. It was him listening to their album just because someone told him to do that ( or atleast I think so). Chili peppers are humble in their approach to music, it comes from the bottom of their hearts and they collide with people who are listening to it with ears from a industry rather than with the heart.

When you were as messed up as John was from 1993-1998, it takes your body and mind a few years to completely recover from the damage. In fact, Anthony has stated that the time period of writing and recording By The Way was when he really noticed John's confidence had returned.
