    Well I don’t agree with the amount of water change... the beneficial bacteria do not colonize in the water column. They colonize on the filter media, substrate and surfaces.... if you have high nitrites you need to lower them for the safety of the fish, ASAP, I’ve found it more beneficial to do 30-50% changes daily until the levels come down, which for me has taken less than a week in the past. I must have been doing something right...

    • @fayzurrahman4243

      agree with this- change as much water required to lower nitrites

      @@Jaywil07 I seem to have some conflicting information some people say doing any amount of water change doesn't matter as the beneficial bacteria lives in the canasta the substrate The Rock. Others are saying the water and not to do large water changes. As it can affect the beneficial bacteria. I'm confused

  • @fayzurrahman4243
    @fayzurrahman4243 2 года назад +3

    bacteria lives on the surfaces,filter media so 50 percent water change shouldnt be worse than 25 percent water change. My fish love their weekly 80 percent water change

    I agree with you totally. I do 50% water changes only after I know the tank is very well established. I like planted tanks so big water changes are beneficial for them. I think that a lot of people don't realize how much their glass is home to anaerobic bacteria, and how it needs to built strength to survive big water changes.

My new fish have been in tank for 3 weeks now and i test the water everyday (when new) then all of a sudden nitrite and nitrate took off like a rocket! I use Prime and Safe, but when this just happened I used Prime as directed and changed 25% water. Hope all goes well!

    thank you for this. This is actually true. I was guilty of over cleaning just a few days ago. I did a big water change on my 20 gallon. probably about 75 to 80 percent and the.next few days after, my fishes starts having some ammonia burns and nitrite poisoning. I was kind of taken aback since my tank has been very healthy. and it has been running for almost 4 years. I usually only do 50 percent due to EI method bit at that tome.i decides to do 75 or 80. my balance went out of whack.

    I have had issues but I have two stable tanks running for years no water changes but they are fully platnted, filters get cleaned when flow starts to choke. I found the more you mess with the water the more issues your going to have plain and simple. Too many fish is a no no I know we all want elaborate mixed species aquariums to dazzle guests and ourselves but it just does not work that way I have had some of my fish for years now a few of them came with tanks I have bought off of other people my rainbow is over five years old I have cardinal tetras that are ten years of age easy I dont scrub my tanks clean ever at all my snails keep it tip top if you have algae issues stop over feeding and quit putting new fish in the tank its all about balance and being patient I time my lights so they come on at 11 am till 9pm when stuff happens dont freak out and start chemmig you water you will only make things worse. when I first set up my tanks I do 25 percent water changes on mondays only once a week till it gets stable on its own the plants tell me alot when I see how they grow I have always found the balance in my aquariums Im not a pro but I figure things out with time and it takes time to get a good stable aquarium.

    Have a few questions. I'm slightly new to aquariums and I'm trying to figure out what's going. Sorry for this long story. I bought a 55 gal tank and no doubt in my mind I over stocked it right away which was mistake #1. Checked my ammonia levels 2\week it was always around 3ppm sometimes it would jump to 5. Added seachem stability as directed to establish biofilter everything was fine fish were eating didn't looked stressed at all. Did weekly 25wc well a week and a half ago I changed out 1 of my filters biobags because it was nasty left the other dirty one in so some bacteria from old one goes to the new one then 4 days ago I decided to change the other old one out and once I changed it my fish all sat on bottom or swam to top and they started twitching really bad so I checked water and nitrites were through the roof. So I immediately started researching for answers and came along your video have been doing 25Wc everyday for the past few days and adding prime lost about 3 fish in those few days. Now to the questions what's causing the twitching? Should I still keep doing wc and adding prime daily? Should I feed every other day? (Had a problem with over feeding) in your opinion do you think I lose more fish

Looked up tons of info on the net, watched a crap load of videos on You Tube and even talked to several LFS people ... I got so much conflicting info that I don't know what the hell is right or wrong anymore!
    I have a 29 gallon tall with a divider inserted, and running 2 Aqua Clear HOB Filters (the 50 & the 20). Both have an intake sponge, 2 bio sponges, a poly-fill pad and mixed bio rings, balls, lava rock, etc! I also run an air stone with a bio sponge over it to hopefully create aerobic bacteria while moving water. Tank has been cycling for 4 weeks with only 2 Bettas that get fed once a day, and 6 good sized Marimo balls to help with water quality. Stopped changing water after week 3 due to advice from a Seachem Rep! Was told to "start cycle over again by adding Stability daily, and to add 4 1/2 cap-fulls of Prime every 48 hrs and not to change the water for one week! By day 5 my bettas appeared stressed out to the max and appeared to be developing tail & fin rot! So I called several LFS and was advised to stop everything Seachem told me to do and just leave my tank completely alone for one week to let it cycle naturally... NO water changes, no NOTHING! By the next day the Nitrite spiked up to .50 ppm and my Bettas were laying around the tank, clinging to plants! That was the day before yesterday... I couldn't take watching my fish slowly dying so I changed about 8 gallons of water and they perked right up! I left the water alone yesterday however, the Nitrites rose to .25 ppm so I changed another 8 gallons again today and after talking to another LFS guy I was advised to add a fine mesh bag of fish food to my tank to help produce ammonia. He believes that my nitrite issue stems from the fact that my tank is under stocked, which is the reason i'm not seeing any ammonia since the start-up of this tank! I have run API master tests every 48 hrs since the tank was set up... I NEVER got a reading of higher than 0 ppm on Ammonia since the tank was set up and I only began to see the Nitrite rise after the first week and a 50% water change! Since I stopped poisoning my fish with the Prime I have done two tests... the first one 2 days ago, after the water change and I got about ,25 ppm nitrite and 0 ppm ammonia. When I ran the test again today (48 hrs later), I got a reading of closer to 50 ppm nitrite and .25 ppm ammonia - which prompted me to change out about 8 gallons of water. I removed the bag of fish food as well and started treating my bettas with API's Melafix & Pimafix for possible fin rot. I decided to go light on treatment as I only noticed it 2 days ago and i'm not sure if it's actually fin rot or chemical burns from the Prime and I didn't want to destroy my bio filter media by going all scorched earth with my tank not cycling properly and risk doing further damage to my fish as well as my filtration system!
    THIS IS A FREAKING MESS!... and I am very much afraid of loosing my Bettas which cost me $100!
    I'm wondering if I have municipal water issues that may be contributing to this situation but I have never heard of GH & KH as NOBODY has mentioned this possibility to me, so I am hearing about this for the first time while watching your video. Do you have a video about GH & KH that I could check out to learn more about it?
    Thanks for your help.

      +jul labro your tank is cycling. You need to get a stability and start to focus on stabilizing that tank asap. Now I would also test this a few times and see if the test kit is not out of date.

    I have new tank syndrome and my nitrites are high the other numbers seem to be ok but I think my filter needs to be changed because it is bad but I'm scared to do that and have the fish die. What's the best way to do that right now without causing more harm?

    • @Jaywil07
      @Jaywil07  3 года назад

      If you have a nitrates and all of your other parameters are good that means that you do not have a enough colonization strength for the ammonia consuming bacteria.
      Get a bottle of Dr. Tim’s or Fritzzyme 7. A small water change might even help you overcome that just by giving them freshwater more oxygen and some minerals.

      I'm new to the hobby, saltwater, about 5 weeks in, and I've watched countless videos, googled, talked to people and your video was most helpful!! I have a question? My ammonia finally hit 0, my nitrites are staying at 1, down from 2, and my nitrates are at 5...Down from 160ppm. Does this mean my cycling process is coming close to the end? Thanks so much! I appreciate ya!! :)

    When I moved from my 55 to 90 gallon I used both established canister filters along with all the rock fixtures and never had a problem. I feel if someone is going to start a brand new tank to buy a filter and if possible rock fixtures and let them run on a friends tank for a couple months then set the tank up if it's possible.

    you have any idea how to sterilize an aquarium. I lost all my fish to either a bacteria or fungal. I've heard hydrogen peroxide

    • @OldSchoolFishGuy
      @OldSchoolFishGuy 8 лет назад +1

      +Ronald Thomas --- Hydrogen Peroxide isn't a bad idea but I'd actually recommend a heavy dose of vinegar with a GOOD flushing afterwards - vinegar is not poisonous or dangerous - but it will throw off your nitrogen cycle as you restart - just test good and you'll be OK

    • @Jaywil07

    I have a nitrite problem!! Help!!!!! I have a new 75 gal tank with two 9", two 7" and two 5" Oranda goldfish. And the tank is heavily planted but only on 50% of the area (on the right half). I have 3 HOB filters with a total 800 gallons per hour flow. I know this tank is overstocked and need a bigger tank soon. This tank is still cycling at the moment. I always have 0 ppm ammonia and about 10 ppm nitrate, but I can't seem to grow or maintain enough bacteria to convert nitrite. I have been using Prime between water changes to keep the nitrite below 0.5 ppm. I am doing 25 - 50% water change twice per week. How long do I have to keep this up before my tank is fully cycled?

  • @MrPaparizla
    @MrPaparizla 4 года назад

    If you do a 25% water change one day and a 25% water change then next day, you have done 2 x 25% water changes, this is not the same as a 50% water change

    hey Jay, I am planning to switch my aquarium sand because mine is to bright, I like the sand that you use in your main tank and I found it in petsmart and amazon, question those i need to wash it before put it in the tank or not? Also i have fish already inside the tank I will removed 60% of the water add the sand and then fill the tank slowly to try to have the most posible cristal clear water.

    I had pneumonia went away and then I had nitrites and nitrates and the nitrates went away for the most part there's a slight amount but I still have high nitrites despite prime and stability for eight straight days, 25% water changes. I just added some live plants and my nitrites came down a little but I was told that it will kill my fish unless I put stability in there to make it non-toxic for my fish. My question is... Do I use that everyday until my nitrites go away to protect the fish? I was hoping a more natural aquarium with live plants might help to stabilize things
