    I don’t know why people think that this movie is inaccurate. I’ve read a diary of a history professor of Moscow University during that time period. His dacha in Crimea was next to the Tzars. He wrote that Nickolai frequently visited ballerina Mathilda and appeared in love with her. However, he could never marry her per family tradition. He was supposed to marry a lady of princely status from an European family. He reconnected with Princess Alix because he was fascinated by her older sister Elizabeth beauty and modesty. She was married to his uncle Sergei. However, Alix was different, though beautiful like her sister. He married Alix against his parents’s wishes. His father blessed him because he was dying.

      @Rosa01010101 Год назад +8

      @@patrickpalmer2203 Nicholas wasn’t with Mathilda again after he married Alix, whom he was faithful to, quite rare for royal marriages. He was genuinely in love with Alix and never promised Mathilda he would marry her. In fact, he was honest and made her know he wished to marry Alix (it was his wish for years since he was 16 to do so, but it took a long time for Alix to accept him because she didn't want to change her religion as she was required to do to marry the heir to the throne). Mathilda wrote in her diary she felt jealous of Alix (so their characters are pretty much written the other way around in this movie). He did have feelings for Mathilda for a time, I am not saying he didn’t, but after he married Alix he pitied Mathilda and felt guilty about taking her virginity more than anything, pretty much regretting the entire affair as a sin he had to confess to his wife later (since he was very religious) Mathilda was not “the one that got away”, she was a fling. Nicholas and Mathilda didn't meet in that weird contest shown in the movie, they were introduced by Nicholas’s father the emperor. The fictional drama with the guy who was in love with Mathilda and tried to kill Nicholas for it is just that: a fictional melodrama. The stampede didn't happen at the same time the coronation did but days later. The scene where Mathilda has her breast exposed in the ballet is probably added to make the movie spicier. Alix and Mathilde never met. Etc, etc, etc. There are probably dozens more fictional additions. The reality is much more boring (or interesting, depending on who you ask, I am dying for a movie that portrays Nicholas and alexandraʼs romance accurately).

It's true, though, that she and her mother-in-law didn't get along and that her piety bordered on fanaticism/hysteria (hence her falling for religious/spiritual frauds ike Rasputin). And while it's understandable that she has to be shown here as jealous and controlling, it's rather jarring.

He, however, remained faithful to Alix since the day of their engagement.
      And even if he wasn't truly in love with Mathilde, he at least had the decency to let her down gently (he told her from the start that marriage was out of the question, and she knew it). She went on to have a distinguished career and did eventually marry. She fled to Paris due to the Revolution and lived into her late 90s.

This is a TERRIBLE adaptation, it is hugely misleading, historically inaccurate, awful dialogues and appalling acting; and most importantly Hollywood influence and trying too hard to appease to the Western audience destroyed Russian cinematography. This film was made for the Western audience that know little about Russian history and would accept anything without substance but in a pretty wrapping paper. For many Russians this film is an insult, and I am from Russia. This is the worst Russian film I have even seen..... suffered till watched it to the end......

    This is so historically inaccurate as to be laughable. I would have thought russiab film makers would have respected theyr history as to be at least a little accurate with the facts.

      And it is still better than the majority of today's Hollywood movies.

    Was it meant as a parody of sorts? Goodness gracious, what a potboiler! A pretty actress as an ambitious social climber and stunningly beautiful costumes but those are the film's only merits. Because it uses the names of real historical figures and is labeled biographical, some simple-minded viewers might take it for historical truth while it is nothing but Chinoiserie à la russe. Vodka-caviar-matryoshka-balalaika, with a dollop of Frankenstein.
