As a proud owner of w210 e55 I can say with a assurance that this thing is a rocket and definitely going to be a future classic in a couple more years!
I've got a face-lift w210 e55, yes it is a beautiful looking car and pleasure to sit inside with very comfy seats and the sound it makes is undeniably one of the best pieces of music made to date....but, the big but, does it feel fast? No, unfortunately it doesn't, its not bad in a straight line but it just doesn't have that good scary thrill that you expect it feels like more noise and less movement, also around bends it feels wofty and boat like I have a w202 c43 amg also and whilst power figures are lower it is much more of a pleasure to drive feeling tight and precise perhaps it is tbe weight difference and before any one suggests the under belly of the e55 is practically all new so its not down to worn parts If I had the choice of doing it again would I buy the e55? Nope, I'd save some more and go for the e39 m5 which yes it is more money but its a whole lot more fun and will appreciate far greater in value also being a manual it adds to the driver experience I have studied both cars well as my uncle owned the e39 m5 for a few years and I was madly in love with it sadly the car is no longer with us a big mistake

Back in the 2000's I drove a couple years old one of this model and even as a learner driver ,I couldn't understand what the fuss was all about, like seriously at the time, the Subaru WRX for example was a much more violent push against the seat feeling vehicle than this Benz,look a pro driver can get it going fast ,but it's true ability to most of us is not really accessible to 99.9%of drivers including myself. Unless it rained the you got the finest piece of overengineered rust money could buy. The 210 was atrocious when it came to body protection. Was a fantastic car if you lived in somewhere like Saudi Arabia or Arizona though. The shame of Stuttgart for many years.
dad had an e280. ofc not lightning fast but it really feels mercedes inside out. even my dad's current w211 e240 doesnt have the same vibe.. which is why i still miss the w210

I watched wheeler dealers from the start but as you say near the end of Ed it was not as good, it was more about product placement than mechanics. At the start it was much more d.i.y stuff but by the end it was "here's a machine I rented for only £300 a day etc". Plus Mike has progressed from the start by not being too bad, to now being a complete prat.
Good idea about the cabin filter, I hope yours is easy to get to, I need a contortionist to do mine and they aren't easy to find., like my cabin filter. Makes a huge difference with a fresh one in place.
I like how on a service they never changed the plugs, even with the magic of television that would make you believe their not too bad of a job. Even though there's 16 of the barstards and the further back you go towards the bulkhead, the harder those little fuckers are to get to and change. That would have been better piece of mind at about £200 for the bits and several hours labour, oh well. It's got all new cabin filters though 😅👍😎.
Drop the exhaust? I have the same car. Very easy to do the upstream O2 sensors from the engine bay. Biggest issue is valve cover leaks and transmission conductor plate.
I just paid 5K for one w/139k miles. Changed all fluids so far. Needs tires. Slight leak at passenger boot steering rack. Other than that it's a blast so far. Look out for rust. Mine has started in the strut towers, scary
Mike is comparing this car with a Mustang GT of the same era. I’m not a Mustang guy, but you have to be mindful the E55 was almost 3x the price. It better be faster.
Faster indeed..and 10x more reliable to boot. I have literally done NOTHING to my e55 in 3yrs except change the oil about 6 times, same with my two e420's before that. The w210 is one of the most underrated cars ever...and I'm glad for it, cause they are easy to obtain and DIY.
@@shinaito These had bulletproof drivetrains and were built in very limited numbers. These aged horribly because of Mercedes cheapening out on rust prevention methods. Mustang GT's were virtually ubiquitous.

I miss my white 2001 E55 because it was built like a bank vault had 400lbs of torque and still got 22 mpg! I have seen a few with 250K miles still running well and compared to the W211 E55 which looked and drove like a fast Honda Accord yes it had straight line speed but really nothing else worthy of consideration!

However, it's hard not to notice the numbers associated with this channel. 30k views is a good number for this channel, but there are independent channels doing the same topics with double the subscribers and 10x the viewing figures. This isolated video is much better than the format that involves the fake stories and showmanship but watching some guy fixing cars who has no producers or team behind him is much more entertaining and interesting than WD is now. The format that viewers want is changing.

A simple and clever filter is exactly like the Benz one: easy to reach, no metal housing involved. You actually can see what has been going on in the oil system because of the open filter element and you dont throw away the metal can unneccessaryly each time you change filters.
In EU AMG quote 5,3 second with two 75 kg persons on board and full tank of gas that's total of 1940kg. Car without driver weight 1710 kg. In real life this car with 1/4 gas and one person should go under 5 seconds with good Bridgestone or michelin pilot sport tires, beside in EU its 0-100km/h (62,5 mph) and in USA is 0-60mph

That was so good Mike..and yes they are quick..even drivn at 160mph feels like a Sunday drive,day out .nothing really happening at all,talk quietly,eat a sandwich,cuppa coffee,G.F. soozes,average 100 mph in every hour including fuel stops and not wake her.!! Now that's a car.!

@@The2Coolest2 its something I've heard before, and ever since then I've noticed the 4matic W210s in general had less or no rust compared to the RWD W210s. Just my personal observation. And I was in northeast so I saw plenty of W210s with rust. I believe the 4matics were made in different factory due to the different drive train, possibly even in Austria and maybe they used different paint process or had different laws/regulations than Germany and maybe thats why their paint held up better

aren't easy to find., like my cabin filter. Makes a huge difference with a fresh one in place.
With some grazed knuckles and an offset socket you can get the front sensors off without dropping the exhaust.
Lots of things can be done simpler and with less commotion than the manuals would have you believe. You're quite right.

@@electric8668 Very common problem for all W210 cars. Luckily the part is much cheaper than for the 7 speed found in the W211 facelift cars.
valve cover is simple job. I found it's hard to remove driver side O2 sensor through engine bay though
