    Do you not think that its purposefully left ambiguous for a reason? McCarthy need not focus on why civilization ended, what is important to him is human nature.

    though the cause of the cataclysm was ommited the opening monologue states "the clock stopped at 1.17, there was a long shear of bright light and a series of low consussions"
    This gives us an indication of a electromagnetic pulse (EMP) consistent with a nuclear explosion or natural occuring EMP

    Darastrixx A meteor would cause multiple concussions. Aside from the breaking apart of large chunks of the rock parts of earth would be pushed into orbit and be pulled back down. Also it was probably nearby because if the whole world was affected as bad the beetle would not have made it to them.

    I imagine its a nuclear war situation and nuclear winter due to the whole the clocks stopped at one part

    • @Salt-Upon-Woundss
      @Salt-Upon-Woundss 10 лет назад

      i dunno even if that did blow it would be no where near this level of destruction a full scale nuclear exchange is one of the few things that could go this far and its the only explanation for all the plant life dying and also nuclear weapons don't vaporize that much most of the damage comes from the shockwave and the fallout isn't that bad compared to a nuclear meltdown and will only be highly radioactive at ground zero of the explosion

    • @Salt-Upon-Woundss
      @Salt-Upon-Woundss 10 лет назад

      ***** Still thou its eruption would mostly only affect the western hald of the United States ive looked at a lot of the projections for ash spread as well it would be more of a localized event but it would screw the climate up and throw us into another mini ice age but a all out massive nuclear exchange could possibly have comparable results

    • @StClare_
      @StClare_ 9 лет назад

      *****
      Most plausibly, given our current situation, it would be the failure of a massive geoengineering (albedo modification) scheme to halt climate change.

    This can't be anything like a nuclear war or solar flare because the radiation would kill them too. Baldness is also a side effect of prolonged radiation exposure and ten years of that stuff is just too much.

    • @potatopotato8360

      +Justin Colon Nuclear bombs get detonated in the air, they only leave residual radiation under their detonation point. So no, people wouldn't die of radiation.

  • @Darastrixx
    @Darastrixx  11 лет назад +1

    But that still wouldn't explain the death of every living thing such flora and fauna. That requires significant atmospherically and planetary alterations, which a meteor or nuclear winter wouldn't achieve (although it would to some degree regarding climate change). Regardless of the disaster, life goes on.

  • @fergie123able
    @fergie123able 11 лет назад

    It could in fact be a nuclear exchange, considering the effects of nuclear winter. In simulations even relatively minor exchanges between countries like india and pakistan produce such effects (though not to this level). If there was a massive enough exchange, (and yes, some ppl would probably survive it) effects such as in the movie could occur.

    Nuclear war wouldn't destroy all animal and plant life, for the that the atmosphere would need to be strangled which war wouldn't achieve.

    • @marysueeasteregg
      @marysueeasteregg 3 года назад

      VERY unlikely. Solar flares/CMEs, even the strongest known by the sun like the Carrington Event of 1859, do not harm the biosphere. The Earth's magnetic field protects life from the worst of the radiation. But solar flares/CMEs pose a grave threat to modern civilization, because the strongest can damage and destroy the electrical grid and electronics. Massive numbers of people would die, initially of dehydration (water dlievery systems would fail), and starvation (transportation would be shut down, except for things like bicycles and horses). And disease and civil violence, too. But CMEs leave the biosphere intact. Isolated indigenous people would not even notice the difference, except for the auroras which would result from a solar flare. People who know how to live off the land could survive, unlike in this situation. And eventually the survivors would relearn how to farm without modern technology, though it might take centuries.

    I agree it was more of a natural disaster than a man made one. I doubt a nuclear holocaust would cause natural plant and animal life. Would a nuclear winter also cause the clocks to stop with an affect on magnetism? I image solar flares or a meteortie would.
