      The mesh of the Fern (if you sat in that one), feels really lightweight and breezy, But The fabric on the Embody, as well as the Fern Digital fabric, is way better if you intend on long sitting sessions for work. I split the difference and got the Fern digital fabric - but some conference chairs at my office have the Embody.

    Chair looks amazing and feels exceptionally well-built. Very quiet with no creaks or squeaks. The fatal flaw is that the seat pan is not long enough for tall people (I'm 6'3"). The seat pan IS adjustable but if you sit with good posture, straight up, and move the seat pan forward all the way or even one click short of maximum length, your behind will be sitting on the very edge of the back of the seat cushion with a large gap between the back of the seat and the back rest.

    I have one since 7months now. I'm 185cm for 105kg and it's perfect in terms of height. When I received it, it had a problem with the back and forward of the seat that would not be blocked in position anymore after the first use so I contacted Haworth service and they responded that i should try to repair it myself event at the risk of breaking it and if that didn't work they would take it on themselves and exchange it. And they did. I couldn't repair the broken part so they exchanged it under two weeks.
    The backrest is really the plus of this chair, it's really good. It follow your back without hindering your movements too much. The only part I'm disappointed with is the cushion of the seat. It was really good the first month but after using it between 4 and 10 hours per day it's now hurting almost as much as my old gaming chair after 2 years of use. It's making me happy to have a standing desk so I can have some pause when using it while working which shouldn't be the case so soon for the price.
    But overall, I think it's a great chair for big guy but more lightweight than I am, I guess.
    (Plus I don't know if it's still available but there was a way to have it new with a discount of ~200€ on their european website with a discount code).

    • @Aaron_Lesse
      @Aaron_Lesse 2 года назад

      @@themeanie. My search continues, although just over one year ago I did check out all available floor models at my local office Depot and went home with a $350 Shaquille O'Neal chair for big and tall people. It delivers comfort when it comes to the backrest, although the fixed armrests fall drastically short of optimal and the seat cushion has already started sagging just enough to lose some of its initial comfort. And it's all fake leather, so it gets hot and sweaty with use.
      In my experience, it was a nice upgrade from a wooden low back chair, but I'm still looking for something better for a tall person with wide shoulders to work in all day long, preferably with a mesh back to stay cool and maybe even a mesh seat if it's constructed and designed correctly.

    Finally the review I was waiting for, but I already bought a used Fern for 400€ and I am totally happy with it. The thing that make me wonder, are the prices here in Germany. You can get the Fern show in the video for around 1300€ to 1600€, depending on the dealer. Without lumbar support, tild adjustment, fixed armrest and basic fabric for 900€. In comparison the Herman miller embody only costs 1200€ from a local dealer.

    Great review. Owner of a Fern for 1.5y now and although I have some issues with it, I can confidently say your review is on point and shows the main traits of the chair. I will point out 3 things that I would correct (but it's also a bit opinionated): the seat is a bit too firm for me but I do have a harsher seat fabric (felt/wool); the armrests, while being super adjustable and having stupid side range, they won't stay in place as much as I'd like; finally I want to note the lumbar support may not be for everyone despite not being too pronounced, but it CAN be removed (you can look it up on the chair manuals online, it's tricky but possible).

    "Half the Price" or $924, seems to be the Quick Ship Black (Coal) version, while lumbar is added, no forward tilt and the base is plastic. In US Store, before any promotional discounts, a custom Mesh Fern (only way to get forward tilt on official store), without Lumbar and default color, is $1239. When you configure it with the fabric colors shown in video and lumbar, the price goes up to $1419, closing the gap with the low Embody.
    Luckily, forward tilt isn't well implemented, like mentioned in video. So it could of be said, at $924 (plus 10% off now), if you are fine with the quick ship black configurattn, plastic base with no forward tilt, it is a very attractable price, plus shipped fast.

    FERN UPGRADE - I've got fern and it's silent when you upgrade the noisy wobbling hand rests. Take them out from the chair base sleeves (you need to push from the bottom) and then insert a small plastic (1,5-2mm thick) in between the sleeves and the arm rest inserts to fill the gap. You can also use a duck tape to tighten the inserts because they are from 2 parts so you could take the arm rests out but since they are not tight the whole arm rests are wobbly and noisy. When you duck tape the two parts together the arms rests are then sturdy and make no noise.
    If you have lumbar and it starts to make squeaking noises you need to take the fabric down then the front mesh then the lumbar pillow and then you put some vaseline on the metal moving parts of the lumbar. Then you put everything back together and it's like new.

    I also tried it alongside the Embody and I preferred the way the Embody sort of slightly hugs your back. The Fern was nice but it felt a little like sitting against a balloon. I also found the recline smoothness lacking compared to the Embody. Definitely an extremely good value for the price though!

    This video is SPOT ON! I'm 6'1" and 165 lbs and went deep into the market, spending hours in stores trying every Steelcase, Herman Miller and Haworth model. Like you said at 4:29 the problem with so many is that you can feel the bottom through the cushion. So I've come down to the same 2: HM Embody and Haworth Fern.
    Embody Pros: best seat hands down!
    Embody Cons: lumbar is quite firm by design and the armrests go all the way forward to my wrist crease and do not adjust front/back. Higher price.
    Fern Pros: thicker cushion than competitors, tall back with the best combo of support and comfort (I found the optional adjustable lumbar option is necessary)
    Fern Cons: the seat gap issue is real - would be a deal breaker if my legs were any longer but I seem to be ok 2-3 clicks from the max extension. If you're under 6ft ignore this con.

    I tried the Fern in Digital Knit with the lumbar adjustment after the last Haworth Black Friday sale and it wasn't for me. Here's why.
    First, I LOVED the seat. Super comfortable, generously-sized, and well-designed. For this ergonomics rebel, it was easy to bring my feet up without any hard edges digging into me, unlike the Aerons I'm subjected to at work. I could also sit on my knees and have my feet slip right into the gap between the seat and the back. On chairs that have no gap, this isn't possible! This is by far my favorite seat.
    The seat back was also great in how it moves with you, and the Digital Knit felt great. The whole chair was really solid and well-designed.
    Except, the arms did not work for me. I push down on them to change positions several times per hour and because they don't lock, they will slip on you and cause you to stumble. The other failing was mine: I *really* should have gotten the model with the headrest. Because it's a part of the chair, it can't be added later. I thought the seat would be tall enough to skip it at 5'4", but that is not the case. I tried a neck travel pillow and it's too fiddly for daily use. So, I ended up sitting in other positions more often, which meant I ran into the issue with the arms moving more often. If the arms could lock in place and not be so fiddly, and if I had the headrest, I probably would have kept it. Even more so if the recline could be locked like the gaming chairs. Which by the way, the Secret Lab Titan Evo 2022 was a disaster for me. It was like sitting on stiff boards on the bottom and back; not my idea of comfort. It took me a month to decide if I should return the Fern. I knew I was returning the Evo within an hour.
    Keep up the great videos.

    Was looking at the Embody Gaming edition, but the lumbar support (which I'm especially looking for) seemed lackluster compared to the Fern.
    Haworth Fern in Europe currently has a 20% discount, and I just pulled the trigger.
    I'm 6,2" (188 cm) and weigh around 220 pounds (100 kg).

    I really wanted to love this chair but I'm in the process of returning mine. I got the executive version with headrest, (fake) leather, and no lumbar, as Haworth wasn't selling the headrest with any other fabric through their store. I like a lot about the chair, but really think that all three of those options might be the wrong choice. The headrest feels a bit cheap and is a little too far forward, so my shoulders can't fit quite right with it on, though it fits my height well enough (6'1", 185lbs). The leather isn't breathable at all and weirdly ripples/bunches when I sit in the chair properly -- not a great fabric for the flexible construction of the chair. I think the mesh or knit would work much better. And I found myself shoving a rolled up towel in the back, because without additional lumbar, the midback just collapses and causes me to slouch. Another small issue is that with broad shoulders, the back's frame does dig right into the center of my shoulder blades sometimes, which is not ideal.
    All that said, though, yours is the first review I've seen that really goes into detail on the lumbar feel (most just say "it's aggressive"), and I think I may try to find a dealer with one in mesh with lumbar and see if it resolves my issues, because I genuinely like the recline feel, the back flexibility, the seat, and overall look, and think a breathable version with some support higher up in the back (and maybe without the headrest) might be the way to go.
    Or I may end up with a Gesture w/ headrest, since I really *do* want a headrest for lounging...
    Thanks for the good review!

      One thing to note with the Gesture and it is possible that I was using it wrong but I didn’t find it a great lounging chair. If you recline back, there is a bit of resistance, so you have to put a bit of effort to making it stay reclined versus most other chairs I’ve tried. Armrest of the Gesture is really amazing though

    • @DeadManInBlack
      @DeadManInBlack 2 года назад

      Thanks for the great review on the options and leather. Hopefully they will rectify the fabric options for the headrest at least. Does this allow for the headrest to be added later as I can't see any cut outs/attachment areas on the non headrest version.

    I just bought the fern and have had it for a few weeks now. I tried out the embody several times, but I found rather uncomfortable and the pull out seat seems cheaply made. the extending portion of the seat is not of the same material as the entire seat. I was quite disappointed in the Embody. However, with the fern, I immediately fell in love with it. My only complaint, and some may see this as a big con, is the forward tilt. Since the top of the seat does not tilt forward, the forward tilt option is rather useless. Nevertheless, the Fern, in my opinion, is by far, better than the embody. I am 5'9, about 190 pounds. I've had mine for about four months now. Coming from an Aeron remastered I am much happier towards the end of the work day in the Fern. The Aeron was simply too strict in the lumbar area and did not allow much variation in position. I did not order my Fern with the built in lumbar cushion because I was worried about being locked in with too much support again. I did however place a 2" thick rectangle of latex cushioning in the lumbar area gap of the chair, which works wonderfully for me. The one improvement I would really like to see is the recline stop steps much closer together. Even one click back is too far back for me to type so I just leave it locked fully upright all the time.

    • @Ahnestly
      @Ahnestly  2 года назад

      So interesting. Why not leave it at the first tick but get it super tight? I just tightened mine and had to loosen it since I like to sit back just a hair!

    • @samhunter6813
      @samhunter6813 2 года назад

      @@Ahnestly I do that sometimes too, but fully tensioned is even more upright than the first locked position. What I am looking for is something between the first and second locked position. I can sort of accomplish that by setting the lock one click back and setting the tension just right to allow it to stop between 1 and 2. The issue is that depth of recline will change if my feet are tucked under the chair, flat neutral, or extended in front of me.
      I've gotten quite comfortable at the first locked position at this point and don't find myself fiddling with it much any more. I crave upper back support and LOVE that this backrest curves back inward up top and supports my entire back to the top of my shoulders.

    Nice pick, I've been rocking one for a few weeks now. I went with the digital knit w/ wool seat and love it. May end up removing the lumbar support though.

    this is one of the chairs I would consider, but looking at other reviews I've seen the headrest is not that good. That's my pet peeve with these office chairs: why good chairs with good headrests are so rare? why the back is often short (ok, this is not that short)? I want a chair where I can work and when I want to watch a movie I can recline and put my head on a good headrest.

    • @Ahnestly
      @Ahnestly  Год назад

      Yeah headrest isn’t great but check out my embody vs fern video! You’ll see some cool stuff regarding headrests!

    Thank you for this. Looks like a great alternative to the much pricier Herman Miller Embody. Now to get my hands on one in Canada here....seems a bit difficult as I can't just order through the site and have to go through a dealer.

    Informative review. Would be great if you can also try out the Fern with headrest option, which is what I'm thinking of getting.

    • @Ahnestly
      @Ahnestly  2 года назад

      I think the shipping period on that was ridiculously long, so I requested a non headrest version instead!

    Unfortunately, the competitive pricing is gone. This chair now exceeds the cost of the Aeron, Leap, and the Embody. The cheapest possible version (no arms, plastic base, mesh, etc) is $1,579.68. At that price, you'd need a ~37% discount to approach that $1,000 mark.

    • @Ahnestly
      @Ahnestly  Год назад +2

      Hey, are you in the USA? If so, I'm seeing a fully loaded plastic base model for $1,155?
      haworth.pxf.io/AoJJED
      If you remove the lumbar and forward tilt, it's $1,015

    Not a lot of Fern videos out there. Which would you recommend for long gaming sessions, Fern or Sayl? Awesome vids btw!

    • @Ahnestly
      @Ahnestly  2 года назад +1

      Thank you!!! I personally like the Fern better. I'm sitting on a Sayl right now at home and the seat is awesome, but I need some more targeted lumbar support like that on the Fern! Let me know which you decide on (please consider using my Amazon link if you decide to purchase - helps the channel a LOT!)

      I do own one! I think they're both great! I kinda prefer my non knit version for a little more breathability, but the extra padding is quite nice!
