James O'Brien highlights the 'political imbecility' of Brexit amid new food import checks | LBC

  • James O'Brien discusses recent reports suggesting food imports to the UK are at risk in confusion over post-Brexit checks and emphasises how this proves how 'stupid' the idea of Brexit really is. James highlights how people believed the words of a 'proven liar' in Boris Johnson and a 'proven idiot' in Jacob Rees-Mogg, who assured people that 'food would be cheaper.'

So the foods have to be tested or checked, was that not happening before ? Why would we not hold up standards imposed on China to the EU just because we paid them a giant fee not to check their standards. It sounds awfully fishy to me. Higher food price is indeed awful.

@@seamuspadraigsanders431 it wasn’t happening before because we were part of an economic bloc and aligned to the same food standards rules, and we contributed to common funds just like every EU member does. So we didn’t “pay them a giant fee not to check their standards”. This change is bad news because introducing checks will mean delays and we import a lot of fresh food from our neighbours. Not something that applies to China.

@@just_some_guy_on_the_internet Yes I did a little research and what I came up with is DEFRA is a mainly pro EU institution by trade, their 200 million check of standards regarding the already extremely checked EU produce is obviously some weird type of attempt to undermine Brexit and make the Brexiteers look bad, considering the current cabinet is 60 per cent remain and the other shadow side of government is over 99 per cent remain I would look there, as it seems to have no justification in any UK law and or rhyme or reason to interfere in standards already well managed.

I work with a bunch of brexiteers. Committed to it.
    They are changing though.
I told them that February the 1st was happening and they swore blindly that it wasn’t.
In the next breath they said it happened because Johnson wasn’t the PM anymore. 😔🤷
The “cult of Johnson and Brexit” still stuns me nearly eight years later.
“If Boris in charge we wouldn’t have high prices at the supermarket” etc.
    Stunning!
It great to be right all the time. It really is.
Some of them have had problems travelling around the EU. I told them about the visa and they again said “that wasn’t true”. Their little faces when they realised that half their family wasn’t going to get one as they have probation and convictions that are going to haunt them now.
Bognor Regis in March is going to be lovely for them.
We’ll be eating army rations after the checks at the border all but disintegrate trade.
I tried to tell them James. You tried to tell them. We couldn’t cut through the thick layer on the custard.
    It’s maddening being right.

In fact, I was contacted by the authorities to see if I would be willing to return from retirement to help organise procedures as almost no current staff had experience of operating under WTO conditions. Because all three parties deliberately sabotaged Brexit and the government or leftist NewLabourite-packed civil service didn't prepare for it - intentionally. It's still the political will to make Brexit as painful as possible and the even higher (than Labour) post Brexit record immigration figures are there to water down Brexiteer votes to irrelevance. The next LibLab coalition will hold another referendum to join the EU (with only the Libs mentioning it in the manifesto of course) - and the 1%+ PA population replacement that's happened over the last 10 years will easily push the "join" vote over the line. Only we'll join as new members - no concessions, forced to join the Euro and in line with the 2030 accords that will place all our natural resources in the hands of the unelected Eurocrats. The political class will get what they wanted all along - total alignment with the EU - this was all a clever game.

The thing about them is not that they didn't know (and maybe they didn't... they seems foolish enough but you can never tell if that's just an act) but that they didn't particularly care either way. They had set up their own affairs so that they would benefit, the studied carefully what they had to say to get their way rather than what would happen, they benefitted, and they probably feel that this justifies everything. In their worldview if someone didn't benefit when they did it's their own fault even though they do know that most people would be worse off from their actions and that only their select group of friends could possibly benefit.

Another thing that feeds into this. There is currently a severe drought in southern Spain, an area that supplies a lot od fresh fruit and veg to the uk. They are in discussions with Portugal over shipping clean water from Portugal to Spain to help alleviate this but Portugal themselves are also suffering from the same drought.
It is very unlikely that they will send food to the UK to rot in uk ports when they can easily supply what they are able to produce, paperwork free, within the rest of the EU. The uk boarder checks will just add to the incentives to no longer supply the UK.
Things are starting to be quite elemental for them and a cost they didn't have before, is not one they can afford now.
