Ravel said he wanted the melody at the beginning of Ondine to almost blend in with the shimmering effect in the right hand. He didn’t want it to stand out, and I think khatia does that perfectly. Bravo!

No matter how brilliant Miss Buniatishvili's performances of piano concertos by Tchaikovsky, Schumann and the likes are, it is only the French "Impressionist" composers who are able to give her a canvas as free and wide as a landscape and an endless palette of colours, which she magically transforms into a totally new musical painting, born in front of our eyes and living inside our ears and minds..

It is so great to get to hear anyone perform with such a high level of musicianship! This piece is so technically demanding yet she seems as though she has been playing it her whole life! Her playing is passionate, purposeful and direct. She really seems to know where to take us in this piece of music and it is really great to be along for the ride! Sheer magic! And she is so beautiful! It's like Ava Gardner and a young Elizabeth Taylor had a child who plays piano! What a great post!

I’m not sure how many of the posters (should I state posers?) here play live music. The recording was not the best because of how live the hall was for this piece with their mic setup. More importantly, there were rude audience members making noises in the hall. Shit like that tends to distract even the best performers. Take this performance for what it is: a gorgeous woman playing an impossible piece. Her interpretation is just that. You can’t deny her ability just because you don’t like her choices.

Calm down lads and I do think this kind of 'messy' effect is what the pianist tried to achieve, for Gaspard de la nuit actually represents for ghosts haunting in the darkest of nights, just consider Walpurgis Night for instance. In such cases, the colours of night, the milky white, grey should be all mixed up, but you can still sense the horrid from these ambiguous shades. For the strength and speed I daresay Khatia did a rather good job here.

It needs to be weird and messy to challenge us to open our minds further....and difficult to play to top it all...from Ravel's own intentions to best (legacies from ) the then most difficult Russian work Islamey with much folk material that Khatia 's Georgian background could be more open to than us, ...Then the whole debate in fantasy of what art (as science of the poet) is...an unlicensed discussion, supposedly with the devil acting almost like Casper(Gaspard) the friendly ghost...appearing and disappearing ...handing down a copy of the poem... All I can do is try to be open... to this French Artistic Intellectual messing with our minds with extreme technical piano difficulties that Khatia is able to deliver with ram rod straight posture of such dexterity and beguiling flexibility .... It is an experience of ultimate extremes much like Faust... of European grappling with fascinating unknowns...that are best left appreciated in the paradox of ' more fully as half knowns'.....' clarity in the dark'...

Terrible performance. Also in Ondine she did score mistake or its an echo.

too messy, dry and sometimes badly placed dynamics, specially scarbo.

      can you play it?
i mean, it's already a feat to even attempt a piece of such a high degree of difficulty.
it's nearly impossible to play gaspard ideally, just as the ravel intended it to be played.
khatia might have slipped up here and there, but in general, the piece was played quite well by her, in my opinion)

paylab It isn’t impossible whatsoever, numerous pianists have gotten much closer to the original than this performance. She may have had a bad performance and she is still a remarkable pianist but were it not for the fact that it *is* impossible to make Ravel sound bad, she would have made a mess of it.

Just another pianist BASHING their way through Scarbo, COMPLETELY ignoring the pp and ppp dynamics. Shame on her.

This horrible piece reminds me of why I hate hard core classical music. Terrible, just hard on the ears and mind.
