Young Cellski was the first rapper I heard to attach 'Young' to his rap name....and it was the BEST work Cellski put out. The best 'Young fill in the name albums ever. Man I miss when HipHop was dope. 1990s.
Johnny Nancyboy 1st will have to be Cougnut Mr SandMan 2nd and 3rd would beYoung Ed just wish he released more music but these my top 3 from the city don’t get me wrong they sooo many other frisco rappers I didn’t name but I got my reason for these 3 Andre Nickatina being the 4th
Yo...hey...yo this is Mark 5. (Later changed my Id to Mark V) Just peeped this interview my friend Drew Evrist showed me. Andre is spot on with the making of Killa’ Whale. He picked that beat out of a batch I had and Boom ....laced it quick up at my studio on 3rd Floor Productions in San Francisco. The Killa Whale sound efx was added later. Details is a bit hazy...but I think I had just been to Tower Records in North Beach and cleared them out of a bunch of Sound Efx CD’s to augment some of the skits and shit that Rappers were creating. I’ve seen some comments about the fatness of that track. For you gear heads I can clarify how that process worked. This track and that whole album was recorded on 2” 16 track analog tape. I had just bought the machine from Nasty Mix Records out of Seattle. It used to belong to Sir-Mix-Alot. The bass line in particular was a Juno 106 sound. A sine wave bass and that shit was thick right out of the gate. I sequenced the drums on my Emu SP 1200 which was a killer machine. This was just prior to the Akai MPC 60 coming out. Pad sounds and other synths came from my rack at the back of the room. M-50, DX7 and some other shit which I can’t remember. Those synths were locked to the tape via SMPTE time code and sequenced on one of the original Macs using a early version of Performer. I put a reverse gate reverb on the kick and snare and created a pumping effect. That shit was dropped to the Analog tape which give it some nice fat harmonics. Andre popped the vocals using my Neumann U89 thru a UA compressor. I still own that fucking mic. Like Andre said...he picked the beat...felt it...blessed it and I mixed it to 1/4” analog all in one day probably. Though the details are a little hazy...if u know what I mean.
Fuck yea, huge fan of your work man, much respect and thanks for the insight, dope was sir mix alots equipment, that whole album was epic production wise. Are you still producing?

I always liked those instrumentals Nickatina would put somewhere in the middle of some of his albums. Some of those were such good music I kind of wished they would be expanded and made into full songs. I would buy a Nickatina instrumental LP on day 1. The one from Glock Tawk comes to mind, i think it was titled something about Mac Dre His FRiend or something like that. Scent of a Woman I could hear once every other day until the end of time and never get tired of it. And he did the Ice Cream Truck instrumental on These R The Tales that was boss music. Ghost of Fillmoe off of Daiquiri Factory is one of my favorite Nickatina tracks ever, even though its only ~40 seconds long. Hell, even the acappella tracks he puts out there are tight -- The Night of My Last Rap he straight busts on, and the bonus track on the Midnight Machine Guns album with Equipto was another.
