+Chris “Douggs” Mcdougall Either do I mate. I've been an avid watcher of TED and yourself (on a former channel of mine with a popular playlist heavily featuring you) for years though, and I think they'd be lucky to have you. Putting that playlist together over the years let me live the dream through you guys. It was a genuine shock for me when Ludo died because Jokke's stuff also featured heavily. Anyway, thanks for the memories and stay safe. Respect to all your late friends too. I'm sure they'd be proud.

I only skydive and Im at 205 jumps, here and there I think about doing base but always punt the idea saying "Maybe later down the road." This video is incredible and very informative presented in such a true and honest way. Thanks Chris for the knowledge. Hope you are still teaching base for when the day comes that I feel Im ready.

    What an amazing video!
I always wanted to know how people like Dougs and Dan keep doing this and while others seem to keep dying. Dougs gave for me one of the most humble and informative presentions of BASE you could ever find. He also admitted himself he pushed his luck at times. It's funny because there is a video where even Jeb said Dougs on the troll wall was doing super dangerous stuff, thats something coming from Jeb!
    Keep going Dougs!! Awesome video.

I've been skydiving for 3 years, year round. Been working in skydiving as a coach and packer since last summer. I did my first 3 BASE jumps at Perrine last summer. Just got my first BASE container a week ago. I'm trying to take this slow and learn as best as I can. Keep it simple and make the best of whatever happens. Trust your instincts. We're connected to fate, and this 6th sense exists with us to serve us. We don't know what happens after we die, but let's just assume it's not nearly as beautiful as the existence we all share right NOW.

Such a good video Douggs - so many golden nuggets of information and psychological tips to give one a better chance of survival. So much of this wisdom is also very transferable to other dangerous activities (eg. motorbikes). Had I thought a bit like this, maybe the 21year old me wouldn't have done a 180 degree toggle turn at 100ft that ended in a helicopter trip to the ER and a backbrace for weeks - I had recently seen Point Break and thought I was Johnny Utah.. "young dumb and full of... " the medic in the helicopter soon brought me back down to reality. This video will undoubtedly save multiple lives even if it can't be accurately quantified as everything is very sensitive to initial conditions. Well done sir - you set the standard for BASE education. I am currently sitting on the sidelines from Skydiving as I have a young son - he needs his dad around more than I need to go jumping - yet I yearn to go. And base jumping wise, I still have yet to do one (I had planned to get involved in the 90s but always delayed knowing the sport would progres, equipment get better etc.) - but the goal now is to get into to it in my 60s when my boy can fend for himself - save something for the future right!! Knowing this motivates me to keep fit, supple, eat well for that challenge in later life. Blue Skies and on heading openings - SImon, France

People, base jumping is not for everyone. Just because it looks nice cool and crazy you need to really think if you're prepared to enter this world. Start with skydiving, be very proficient and good in many disciplines and then do a self awareness session with your self and ask yourself if you really want to base jump.

Wow. Being 15 years old and only having rope-jumped from a 72 meter bridge twice, this opened up my eyes. I never really considered just how high of a chance there is not to just mess up in one jump but mess up even after years of experience. Personal notes about this talk.
Douggs was kind enough to share some knowledge about his extensive carrer as a BASE jumper and a teacher of such discipline, mostly from his personal experience.
How little mistakes add up to a catastrophe.
This sport is fun and it can be quite simple but very unforgiving.
    Get REGA.
    0:00 Intro
Experience, state of his BASE career and his relationship to wing suit proximity at the time.
    1:50 LUCK
Develop your jar of skill while keeping your jar of luck as full as you can
    4:48 SAFETY
We don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Be aware of your surroundings as a good habit to have in everyday life and in BASE jumping. We are already doing something stupid so let’s be smart about it.
    6:00 FEAR
Stay scared, the only person in control of your life is you. It’s important to focus 100%
    9:17 COMPLACENCY
The great enemy of BASE jumping. Don’t think it can’t happen to you because it can.
Bubbles analogy where at any given time it can burst on you or anyone around you.
    Dictionary definition by Merriam-Webster
"Self-satisfaction especially when accompanied by unawareness of actual dangers or deficiencies"
    11:50 KNOWLEDGE
Read The Great Book of BASE. Learn from the elder’s experience and how he makes a point on continue to pursue learning either personally or by helping others.
    13:23 ETHICS
Don’t shit where you eat.Help the sport grow, take good care of your objects, help others learn and stay safe.
15:40 KNOW YOU LIMITS (ego part 1)
Confidence and arrogance is a very fine line. You can make mistakes, don’t push your limits constantly and you will get rewarded, be patient in your progression.
18:36 KNOW WHEN TO PULL BACK (ego part 2)
Talks about personal experience I run t 30% to 50% Don’t live in 100% because that means you have nothing left to give, it’s important to build up.
    24:08 CONTINUE SKYDIVING
Skydiving is really expensive but it’s necessary and it’s been lost the last few years.
    25:05 CAMERA SAFETY
No point dying for a f**king Gopro.
26:02 THE WEATHER (ego part 3)
Recommends learning to paraglide and how paramount being aware of the weather is for BASE jumping.
If it’s not fit for jumping, go get a beer, the cliffs are going to be there tomorrow.
    28:30 GEAR AND GEAR CHECKS
Check everything military style, this sport is very unforgiving.
    30:33 VISUALISATION
For good scenarios and bad ones as well, suited for the task at hand. Give yourself the best chance of surviving all the time.
    33:51 WINGSUIT PROGRESSION
Enjoy the progression every step of the way, there’s no need to rush. Once you die it’s forever.
    36:12 THE FUTURE
It’s really important to save something for tomorrow. The older you get the better it becomes.
    38:07 CLOSING STATEMENT
Enjoy making memories with your friends. Be safe and stay alive until the very end.

“I try to mix it up so l don’t become complacent” l love that bit of advice. Deaths like Angelo Grubisic’s in Saudi Arabis in 2019 have played on my mind one how easy it is for it to all be over instantly for no reason other than for what could could be complacency.

Mate that was great, never met you personally god knows why , i knew coomsey briefly, we met at tyagara and toogoollawah did some fun jumps, remember him jumping in a suit and tie hilarious loved him..i worked at byron for a year with scambo, bart, ray, tania, pommy ollie,Dawsey,Timmy,Alby, Gabe ,and a few others used to slip off with floydy in his camper bless him.. also have a good friend Sylvan Vietch, you may know who jumps base lots, him and i know each other from working in Spain, i did manage 2 jumps in Lauterbrunnan from Gimmelwald with Ulli a work friend a few years ago, i don't think they jump that exit any longer, unfortunately we lost a friend stefan on that trip, also later another friend of mine slipped on exit with a wing suit , your talk is spot on mate so much resinated with me and now 61 seeing the world with different eyes and slowing down but still having fun i get that, big respect to you fella for all you have done for the sport in so many ways I've taught aff with 3000 sky dives but trust me my ass was twitching on that exit but focus good exit, on heading opening and ........ fucking HUUUge irreversible reward cheers mate your a legend.Andy G.

Awesome talk Douggs! Thank you so much for such an honest, down to earth and humble sharing! More experienced jumpers should do the same! I feel there are so many guys at the top level, and who so many new fliers emulate...and who certainly have a lot of knowledge, but are not sharing! Biggest points for me were... Don't rush, know your limits, and it's OK to back off a jump! Save some for tomorrow! --- Great advice! Hope one day learn from you personally. Safe jumping and keep teaching! We need it!
