  • Eating vegan is expensive. Or is that just contempt prior to investigation?

      +Rich Roll Hilarious (or maybe tragic). I think this is also a learning example of "know your audience". The people who are already seeking to learn more but have bought into the message of improving their health will have watched to the end. Those who you were presumably trying to educate and convert, are the tougher crowd so missed the humour and probably didn't stick around soon after you showed them two green juices for $24!

    Bloody hell... I am a college kid with a budget of $100 a month for groceries, and the only grocery store within 25 miles of me is a Walmart. Plus I don't have a car, so going anywhere outside of the areas public transit system is out of the question...and guess what... IM VEGAN AND SHOP AT WALMART....AND I BUY ALL ORGANIC PRODUCE AT WALMART! You don't have to go to Whole Foods or Trader Joe's, you don't even have to go to meijer or target. Check our Walmart, Aldi, Food for Less, Safeway, etc..... If you can find a grocery store that a) has a decent produce section, and sells some non-dairy products, you are golden. Every grocery store sells frozen foods, dried, processed, non perishables, etc. Being vegan isn't hard, it isn't expensive, and it sure as shit doesn't require anyone to set foot in a whole foods if they don't want too. Just stop eating animals, it's simple!

    Beans, rice, potatoes, bananas and simple greens. Between the price of these items and the cost of the inevitable medical care if you eat unhealthily, the question is not whether you can afford to eat vegan, but can you afford NOT to?

      +Stephen Otto What a silly comment. What you're saying is, the only other alternative to a vegan diet is an "unhealthy" one. Not so. Veganism can be very healthy, it can also be very UNhealthy. Diets containing animal products can be healthy AND unhealthy as well. Also, not everyone who eats "unhealthy" will require "inevitable medical care". So many fallacies here. I get that you're passionate about your diet, but use some logic and be honest, please.

      All of these books are packed with science, and they all stand for the proposition that a whole food, plant-based, oil free diet is healthier than a diet containing meat and other animal products. By the way, my primary point was the cost -- the cost of eating a whole food, plant-based diet can (and should) be far cheaper than eating a diet that contains animal products. Foods like beans, potatoes and rice are extremely cost-effective!

      IamHueGraves for real. Pasta, canned veggies, fruits. Nuts are a bit expensive, but pb and j is vegan... it was very easy to make the transition as a young person without a whole lot of money stashed away.
      The hard part is people lifting *their* noses at you because they can’t *believe* you would ever not eat *“real”* protein.
      That part stresses me out, but I’ll get over it. I feel really great about what I’m eating, waaay less energy to digest. My food actually gives me energy instead of making me tired.

      @PlantSmartLivingNOW 8 лет назад +5

      +Lauren Howie On a related note, I know you had mentioned the perceived costs of going vegan. I have been seeing that pop up a lot lately in various discussions here and elsewhere. People, for one reason or another, seem to think that going vegan has to be this incredibly expensive endeavor. I think this video of Rich's was helpful, and, if you haven't seen it yet, I know Rich just posted a more recent video where he talked about building a commune, and growing their own food. Though my wife and I do purchase from Trader Joe's, Whole Foods Market and Aldi, I just love the cost savings involved in growing your own food! ...of course, there is a little sweat labor/equity required on the front end, but I'm not so sure that many people are convinced at just how enormous the cost savings can REALLY be! For us, personally, growing our own food has been well worth it, and I do try to encourage others, if at all possible, to try to grow their own food...I tell them to 'start small and build off of their success'...even if you just started out with a single garden bed or container gardening...I wish you the best and let me know if I can be of help with anything! -- Fred

    I love and support you and your mission, Rich, as well as these weekly videos, but I don't however love or agree with your portrayal of the 'higher end' grocery outlets in the beginning of this video. I think it was an unfair representation of these stores, as you went in and decided to buy fresh pressed juices and a bag of goji berries - all of which would be expensive at ANY outlet - rather than buying produce, like in the stores later featured in the video. I know for a fact that the prices of both conventional & organic produce are very comparable at Whole Foods & Trader Joe's, with slight variances based on geographic location. Then there's the bulk section within these 'higher end' stores, in which you could have gotten the rice at around a dollar a pound and the beans at less than a dollar a pound, pretty reasonable. Not to mention, shoppers are paying for a higher quality product in that slight price increase at these 'higher end' stores, which you of all people should know. All in all, still a great and informative video!

    • @richroll
      @richroll  8 лет назад +32

      +Zachary Sevilla I specifically addressed all of these points in the video near the end. Of course I understand all of this and clearly stated that there are indeed affordable options at the higher end markets. My intention was to make a point with a call to action to simply be smart and aware. To do this in a brief, fun, engaging and entertaining video you kind of have to highlight the extremes. Otherwise the video bogs down, becomes too long and ultimately undermines audience engagement.

    • @ZacharySevilla
      @ZacharySevilla 8 лет назад +3

      +Rich Roll Yeah I'm definitely with you on the point you're trying to get across, and I did notice that you made that comment at the end of the video. I guess since because I work at Whole Foods I took it a bit personally haha, which is on me entirely; but even before I worked there I opposed the 'Whole Paycheck' moniker and stigma placed upon it and understood that you paid for what you get while shopping there. I guess I was also a little irked in knowing you could have gotten those goji berries in bulk for around $16-$17 a pound :P haha! But like I said before, still a great video and I've been enjoying YOUR New Year's resolution of being more video-centric. Keep 'em coming!

    We're cutting back on eating meat and eating more fruits and vegetables. From what we remember 4 years ago when we live in FL, the cost of fruits and veggies was more than the junk like chips etc... Here in Switzerland, you pay 6CHF (pretty much $6 for a bag of chips) but 3 peppers costs you only 2 bucks. So pretty much the opposite.

    This was fabulous. I shop at highend health food stores and I have done the box store where there is barely anything organic and I have done everything in between including farmers markets where it used to be much cheaper to shop. I have concluded that so long as 80-90% of my food is produce, it does not matter much where I shop except in the summer fruit months, money goes much further at farmers markets and the quality is much better. I like Trader Joes, but too much of their produce is wrapped in plastic and not grown locally. If I had a limited food budget though, TJs would be my main store. Great video!

    This was one of the first videos I watched two years ago when I made the lifestyle change to a vegan plant based diet, and I was almost dissuaded like, man it's mad expensive to do this am I making the right choice? Turns out yeah, I did, and when you get more comfortable in the kitchen and more knowledgeable with the foods you need to thrive, the price tag is almost nonexistent. Eating a healthy diet is more costly of your time than your money, and for sure is the most beneficial thing I have done for my health and will be for anyone.

    He's absolutely right. Some people who say they 'can't afford' to eat organic - and/or vegan or vegetarian - are not only buying junk food, pre-prepared food (ever compare a big bag of chips vs. a few bananas or a bag of dry beans?), but the other one that always kills me is they're driving a vehicle that cost $10,000-20,000 more than mine.

    Also keep in mind, if you do buy processed foods, vegan or non-vegan, you always pay a little extra. If you pay Turtle Island Foods to make you a Tofurky, if you pay Lean Cuisine to make you some kind of mock-meat dish, it’s a little more pricier because somebody did it for you. So you could also, if you’re really good in the kitchen, make some really good stuff on your own. 🙂

    Excellent video! Being on disability income and recently-turned vegan, AND living in a relatively expensive city (it's the only place I've been able to find my treatment that takes Medicare) it's been a challenge finding creative ways to get produce let alone any pre-made vegan products that I can afford to live on. Fortunately I was able to get a Vitamix back when I had money. Making vegetable and fruit drinks with that, as well as taking advantage of the local free food pantries for the homeless, keeping close watch on local produce sales, taking advantage of the lower prices at farmers markets on SUNDAY afternoon (when they're closing for the week and in a rush to sell off their leftovers) and Costco have all saved my ass. But even with all of this, I'm still not able to really be 100% vegan 100% of the time.
    It's like they say, beggars can't be choosers, and all too often I'm in the position of having to accept food donations and financially just don't have any other choice but to eat stuff that maybe vegetarian, but not vegan. So depending on where you live and what your financial situation is, my situation possibly being among the worst (for now), it can either be as simple as you've described or may take significantly more work and creativity to make it happen. But either way I agree, it is possible to be vegan under pretty much all circumstances unless you're in my position or completely homeless and penniless.

    Went shopping today for my first week of vegan food. All I was able to get was 4 gallons of water (we have city water... its bad news) 1 bag of cherries (on sale), 3 1/2 lbs of tomatoes, 2 lbs lemons (lemon water ftw) 3 cucumbers, 6 kiwis, 1bundle of bananas, and a 12 oz container of nutritional yeast for a whopping $30. And I have to make that last for the next 5 days... I'm committed to doing this vegan thing, but damn if its not gonna be difficult... And in case you are wondering why I have to make ~$35 last me almost a week, I have a grocery budget of about $100 a week, and my wife and kids adamantly refuse to go even vegetarian... To put it in perspective, for around $30, my wife bought a giant lasagna, a 10lb bag of chicken, 5 boxes of chicken helper, and 10 cans of vegetables. That will be what the rest of my family eats this week. Yes, my choices are soooo much healthier, but at the end of the day, who's gonna be hungrier? And of course at dinner tonight, my wife looks over at me between mouthfuls of chicken helper and says "How you enjoying your rabbit food? Plenty real food left in the kitchen if you want some!" Dammit...

    Indian Stores are outrageous! The first time I went into one I was bored and waiting for a friend to meet me at an Art Store, the Indian Store was next door. I went nuts and bought way too much food but I ate off of that haul for a long time!!!
    I love the video, shared...
