I was just curious about what is bourgeoisie, but I found this channel with art, philosophy and all the things that I love... I was looking for copper but found gold! subscribed immediately!
Thank you for that succinct presentation! These two terms seem at times to be used interchangeably and indiscriminately and I hadn't realized why until now.
Thanks for your work Wes, I've been a fan for years, and I especially appreciated your insight with that last video, I find so much peace in knowing that there are minds like yours in the world making sense of everything, thanks from Australia
I was looking for something different that what you discuss here. The way the word Bourgeoisie is used today and the recent past is to refer to the very wealthy. I keep reading that it means middle class. I'm wondering if the word in it's day was closer to upper middle class. Or elite business tycoon. And not someone someone owning a fancy clothing shop. More like bankers and investors. The lower class accepted lords, barons, and the royalty. But they scoffed at anyone lesser than royalty to hold themselves up as the equivalent of royalty and claim to be better than them with more rights. I think that was the reason for the resentment and why the word has negative connotations.
Thank you for the information! And yes, as an American, social image means nothing to me. Even if I drove a Bugatti Veyron, if mama wants a chalupa, she’s gonna get a chalupa.
Someone who lived in a city?!? It’s definitely someone who owns the means of production, such as a landlord or business owner. Someone who sells their labor is not bourgeois. The term middle class obfuscates relationship to production in favor of the vibes-based view of where someone falls in an income distribution.
I have enjoyed hearing you mistake the Carolingians for the Carthaginians twice. Carthage wasn't a thing long before any of the information you're giving in this lecture. Carthage was, first off, not European - it was African - and the Punic Wars between Rome and Carthage were 1000 years before the 11th century AD, when you said that they were the interesting part of the development of Feudal Europe. Which, even that, even mistaking the name, is still wrong. Lol The Carolingians were all gone by the middle 10th century. And the Marovingians were gone even earlier. Lol Great video.
@@nagameel7324 Technically the Phoenicians were Carthaginian. And if you're from the continent of Africa, there is no per se about your African status. African does not mean black-skinned. Even the Egyptians qualified their black-skinned neighbors - it's in extremely poor taste.
I think it's interesting how the left leaning thinkers who have socialist/marxist rhetoric as a kind of basis, take the bourgeoisie vs proletariat concept and set up that dual-like premise for other concepts like men vs women, rich vs poor, establishment vs minorities, and so forth. Any lectures you've done that can be recommended for picking apart these concepts more to kind of have a better handle on why the context of our times seem to stem from that basic marxist idea, or maybe that marxism influences something much deeper going on in how much people in the world seem to rely on polarities more than they're worth? Like clearly they help us set up bases for understanding but the circumstances show much more variance from the mean ends. Anyways, thanks again for all your work!! I wanna get through all your lectures.

Bourgeoisie is a colloquiallism for anyone who owns land and has more money than you.

Upper middle = bourgeoisie
This was on recommended. Why? Not a clue?.. I really enjoyed it tho! :)

Great video.
He literally said Carthage was from Africa and is giving an example that is a correct example on trade routes. relax.
@@kodywhitsitt9356 lol Read the whole comment then tell me to relax.
Snarky AF but yeah
The Carthaginians were Phoenicians but yes Africans per se

Carthaginian Empire at 1000 AD? What?
