@@albusnightspring8057 you’re right, I was referring to the fact that you can still put them in your offhand and place torches without scrolling away from whatever you’re holding
If I use torches at all I don't use them as a source of light for _me_ to see, but rather to prevent mobs from spawning, as well as a form of navigation. I can just turn up my gamma and see all fine in the darkness.

Well you can just turn on dynamic lighting if you have OptiFine installed and then you can just carry torches in your off-hand…
The torch thing is by far the biggest thing Java has over Bedrock for me

Personally I use torches as a means of navigation, not just a light-source

probably cuz he has shaders and with smooth lighting it gets really laggy
