I'm gonna preface this statement with the fact that I definitely respect your decision to stay with your little one and go after a new career path. You have to keep you and your loved ones first on the priority list. But, I can't help but feel discouraged that a significant number of teachers that I watch to get a little bit of inspiration to stay in the classroom all seem to eventually release the "I quit teaching" video.
Congratulations on making a decision you will never regret! I left a corporate career that I loved to be a stay at home dad and to pursue my dream to be a teacher. Looking back, I am thankful to have made that life change and have not had one second of regret. The time with your daughter is irreplaceable and truly priceless. Enjoy this wonderful opportunity to bond and to extend your terrific skills onto other platforms. Thank you for your inspirational and informational videos.
Thanks for sharing that Henry :) Yeah I already feel she's growing up pretty quickly so I'm glad I get to slow down a bit and spend more time with her.
Hi there, I’m currently studying finance and getting my degree in teaching . I’m wondering whether to continue my teaching degree or go into corporate finance. I always loved to teach , my biggest issues are the pay and level of standards that teachers lack. Why did you leave the corporate world to go into teaching ?
I quit bartending after 12 years this year to get recertification on my laxed sec english ed degree....i started sub teaching and it lit me up. I still sub teach while I do my 15 hours. But while I bartended I raised our 2 kids while my wife taught Elementary. BUT...you helped me, bro. Im struggling in sub teaching with classroom management and you helped me! You mattet! Your the truth, Thom! But follow you and do great things. Much love.
Great decision, you will not regret it. I just started back to teaching (took 12 years off for family) and landed my current permanent position in Feb 2020. Right, interesting time to return! I enjoy your videos, I teach middle school math. Best of luck with your new endeavors!!
You will be sorely missed, Thom. Eric was so lucky to have you as a teacher and mentor. I’m happy for you and excited for what’s to come and that you’ll have this precious time as a dad. I’m wishing you the best and rooting for you. You’re one of those teachers who kids remember and appreciate for the rest of their lives.
Thanks so much David :) It was such a pleasure to be a part of Eric's adolescent journey. He's such a great young man. I've appreciated all the love and support from your family over the years.
I know this comment comes a bit after you posted it. I appreciate finding your channel. As a new teacher I am binge watching all of your videos. I am excited for you and your daughter to be able to spend these wonderful and highly crucial years together. Best of luck, and I hope you will continue to upload videos for all of us as they are truly helpful!!!
I appreciate that DD :) I'm still uploading videos but on a different channel now that's more focused on edtech. You can find the videos at ruclips.net/user/newedtechclassroom
I’m Brazilian and New EdTech Classroom brought me to your channel, because I wanted to watch more of your work. I’m teaching presential and hybrid (Hyflex) groups, which has been pretty cool. I’m closer to Edtech more than ever and my school is a Google Partner, so I’m pretty happy with what’s going on here in Rio de Janeiro. But I can understand the feeling of spending more time with your daughter, keeping your family safe, engaging into new projects and working from home. I’m just here to support your decision, and tell you that your videos are inspiring for every teacher. Do keep investing on that. You and Sam should consider creating a podcast. That would be awesome. Best, Juan
I really appreciate you sharing all that Juan :) Speaking of Brazil, I just finished reading Brazilian Jiu Jitsu legend Rickson Gracie's book 'Breath' and absolutely loved it. I've been training jiu jitsu for a few years now and am a slow learning but really enjoy it. Hope to someday train in Brazil. Also, we've got ideas for a podcast and it's on our list of things to start!
Just found your channel. That’s pretty interesting! Another RUclips teacher, RealRap with Reynolds, also just published a video about how he’s leaving teaching and creating ed content online to help other teachers. That’s funny that both of you are following similar paths! Also, it seems like there’s a ton of “I left teaching,” or “why I left teaching this year” videos being published. It makes me wonder if there will be any good teachers left? (I’m personally sort of working on an online MIT but also considering getting a PhD and teaching at the college level) But I think this is an awesome choice for you and I’m glad you get to spend more time with your daughter and wife! Can’t ever get that time back! Blessings!
Yeah I've had the pleasure of meeting CJ when he came to Austin for SXSW Edu a few years ago. I watched his recent video as well and know that it was a hard decision for him to leave. There ARE a lot of teachers leaving but I think there will always be good teachers still teaching. I appreciate you commenting Joshua :)
I just subscribed to your channel, and I know I may very well never see a new video posted on this channel, but I gotta say, I'm grateful for the many things I've learned from just a few of your videos, wish you the best of luck!
Excellent decision~Personal priorities are the most important and you will not regret being with your daughter during this time. I hope your life is playing out exactly as you wished. I have been watching some of your wonderful videos. You obviously have the 'teacher gene' and they must miss you so much. I am a retired high school teacher (34 years) and loved the kids - I laughed almost every day. Then there were the days of humility. NO regrets at all; I still talk to many of my former students as they wrangle adulting. I am also currently coaching new middle school teachers while observing their classes. Middle schoolers~wow~energized! I am back to laughing each time I am around them, while also enjoying their witty insights and sweetness. Your videos and natural sense of the kid truths and realities are so honest, illuminating, and helpful. Thank you for them and bravo~Here's a sticker for you 🌟
ah i just recently found your channel and have found it so helpful. i've been working on my bachelors and really want to be a teacher. it's just rather daunting. i feel like everyone keeps leaving the profession which makes me really doubt myself and wonder if i'm just being naive and should change course while i can. i know that you and others still love teaching though and i think you've absolutely made the right choice for you and your family. you'll be able to help a wider array of kids now!! congratulations!
Yeah for sure. I think many people's story right now is that they're leaving due to extreme burnout but that wasn't the case for me. I left even though I still really enjoyed my job due to the circumstances. I definitely don't regret it though as I'm loving spending time w/ my daughter and working from home :) Teaching is hard AND can be an exciting and rewarding career.
YES! Congrats to you on making a choice for what’s best for your family. (I’ve always wanted to stay home, so I’m a little jealous!) Wishing you the best! ❤️

Super excited for you Thom! Great things are coming!👏👏, and to be frank I also felt like I could best help my fellow History teachers if I devoted myself full time to them. There's a lot of busy people on campus all pulling more than their fair share of the workload, and I think its amazing that seasoned teachers are stepping up to help colleagues in the field. Sending well wishes to you and the fam!😊

Hey there, thanks so much for checking in! For sure. I ran into a former student yesterday at a restaurant. He's a senior. I taught him each year in middle school and did a project with him when he was in 9th grade.
