  • For a while these pass through socket and Ratchet sets were popular by various manufacturers here's the Harbor Freight one which is probably the best deal and worth it for the price just for the sockets . .

    Picked a set of these yesterday, they updated the ratchet and actually fixed the problem. No self reversing anymore.
    Thanks for all the reviews, I've learned a lot on what to watch out when buying tools.

    I find myself using this set WAY more often than I expected to. Turns out I've been doing more exposed thread bolt stuff than i realized. Very handy, especially on a 3/4" gearwrench.

      Yes I like the fact that it's easy to use on Long exposed threads where ratcheting box wrench always want to fall off

    Great review. Interesting alternatives for use of sockets pointed out. Bought this set a couple of months ago. It works fine. As noted elsewhere, whatever the issue was with revising mechanism, seems resolved. Handy set. Will never see heavy use, but nice when you need it.

    Thank you. Pass through sockets are amazing for suspension work. There is additional versatility if you happen to have multiple lengths of 19mm wrenches, and the kit includes 10-19mm without skips, which is really nice. I am putting together a toolbox for people to rent as part of my business, and this will go in it instead of the more difficult to find affordable super-shallow sockets, not to mention that these are shorter.

    I have a couple of the Kobalt sets of this type that I'd been fortunate enough to find on clearance. It's not a tool type I need often, but I have had a couple times I've had a long bolt from which I needed to loosen a nut, and the pass through was definitely helpful.

    Ive done many repairs on my truck with this set for it was all i had (truck walkthrough video in my channel) I was able to do almost everything (clutch to axles) and if this didnt work i had the metrix flex ratchet wrenches to compliment it. Its forsure a sturdy ratchet but not unbreakable lol. Other then your con of the reversing issue I wondered what the heck was wrong with it but my con is the detent fall out cause the lock ring gets stuck on the holders making the detents catch and lose the detents. I would like to try the gearwrench 3/8 and 1/2 set with a flex ratchet more likely the half inch due to the fact going above 19mm. The ratchet on this set will break before its broken in. Its a "half" inch ratchet and the teeth seem to break on pita fastners

    I have the older set of these, it has a much nicer case with at lid, and the ratchet handle is offset. I doesn't seem to have the problem with the directional switch. The older set has the sizes printed on the socket, real easy to read, but the printing is not durable. Have used them mostly on things like sway bar links, to due to them rotating when you try to remove them. Great set, love using mine.

    This got me through a strut/coil job on my sx4. My only complaint is the wrench doesn't seem to be metal all the way to the end. The plastic grip doesn't help getting decent torque on removal. It mayve reversed on me once or twice.

    I have Gearwrench 3/8 set, but I will get the Harbor Freight set for a couple reasons. The Gearwrench set is 3 times more expensive, and the handle is much longer. However, the Gearwrench does not come with 5/16 (8mm) and lacks the ability to use with a 19mm wrench. Thank you for showing the 1/4 hex bit, which is the major reason for me to get the Harbor Freight set. The 1/4 hex bit holder (one side of the adapter) can be used with 1/4 hex bits. Another side of the 3/8 square has no use for me since the Gearwrench come with an adapter to use with 3/8 sockets, so I am going to cut it out to make the 1/4 bit holder even lower.

    Hello sir great post. I do like the sockets that you can use a wrench or another socket but that's a bit crazy the way that ratchet works,, or doesn't

    • @CatusMaximus
      @CatusMaximus  6 лет назад +1

      Yes the ratchet has a strong mechanism but not a strong action to hold the reverse switch which is disappointing. Having the special sockets comes in handy quite often once you get used to using them.

    Love to know the torque at which the ratchet fails. 3/8" conventional ratchets by Snap-on and Tekton have gone all the way up to 300 ft-lbs before the anvil sheared off.

    I found out Bahco makes a flex head wrench and a S or U shaped ratcheting wrench that will take these sockets. You can find them on amazon.de for alright prices being from europe

    • @CatusMaximus

      I would be careful because there may be subtle sizing differences between a name-brand and this Harbor Freight. If they do work that would be great because you could buy this set and then just the nice premium ratchet

    Catus, Q, Opinion, I'm asking your opinion with the pass through under hood work would it be better to get it in impact or stay with crome?
    THE money issue is unimportant. Get what I'm saying.

    • @CatusMaximus
      @CatusMaximus  5 лет назад

      I'm not aware of any pass through sockets that are impact those do sound interesting in general impact sockets are more durable and can certainly be used with hand tools but are also compatible with impact wrenches. The reason you don't use Chrome sockets on impact tools is because Chrome sockets are harder and technically last longer however they can shatter when using them with impact wrenches

    • @suezanarms1287
      @suezanarms1287 5 лет назад

      @@CatusMaximus thank you. That's what I thought too. I had found them with Sunex with 3/8 inserts and a 6 point sided back end on the socket.
      But in the automotive world would the be practical and have a place in the field.
      I'm just starting school and I'm trying to buy up all my tools and I'm on the verge to buy them.
      Am I wasting my time buying them or do you think the 70 investment well worth it.

      It is a stainless steel table, it is a food service table and you can find them from restaurant and commercial kitchen supplies. I like them because they're pretty heavy duty and have additional beams in the center of the table the support the sheet metal. I found this one used

    Oh yeah, I heard that these pass-through sets can be used as low profile sockets as well. In fact, someone did a comparison, and they are actually lower profile than sets sold as "low profile."

    Too Bad They Didn’t Put a Ball Detent In the Middle of The Forward/Reverse Lever On the Ratchet it Would of Prevented the Issue of Reversing 😎👍🏼

    • @CatusMaximus
      @CatusMaximus  6 лет назад +1

      Just what I was thinking. Proto also uses the same mechanism and their large ratchets work great but the little ratchets suffer from the same self reversing problem. So Harbor Freight is is not exclusive to this issue.

    These through sockets are too tall to work in tight quarters., and for that reason a set of box end wrenches with or without ratchet are better for general use. btw, All HF ratchets using a reversing lever lack positive DEE-TENTS.

    • @CatusMaximus
      @CatusMaximus  6 лет назад

      That is an incorrect statement I've reviewed the indexable ratchets which have a very high-quality mechanism and a stout ball bearing detent on the reverse lever. Also the point of pass-through socket is not to be a universal do everything socket set they were originally invented and sold as being a convenient way to have an interchangeable sizes on what would be a ratcheting box wrench capabilities of passing over along threaded fastener but while having the socket properties of staying on the nut instead of just wanting to slide off
