I just had an amazing idea, a couple is killed and one of them returns as a revenant, and the other comes back as a ghost trying to make them forgive and return to the afterlife.

I will be home brewery that ghosts are afraid of how they died. For example. If they died in a fire they would be afraid of Fire.

Totally unrelated to the topic in the video, I know, but I just started thinking about it for some reason.

The half damage thing is so the martial classes can actually fight the ghost and not just sit there and do nothing while the spellcasters get to have all the fun even more so than usual cause the DM gave the magical items to the casters

@thedungeoncast Surely, the reason behind ghosts, spectres and wraiths can be hit by non-magical weapons is the fact they are still connected to the material plane. As their essence is still lingering.

I have been wondering what the difference between a spectre and wraith are. Now I know.
Spectre: A soul stripped of identity, sanity and purpose.
Wraith: A black hole of negative energy that uses a soul as a shell.

I remember that Arakora (The Birdmen) have a life span that's super sort like 20 or something, what happens if one fails a Ghost's Aging ability, does that insta kill the Arakora with no chance of revival?

    • @Thedungeoncast
      @Thedungeoncast  5 лет назад +4

That is a great question. I want to say yes to the possible insta-death but I would definitely allow revival.

  • @AnonCaptainAwesome

I hate to be a bit of a stickler, at the start of the video you lumped all of the creatures together but a Wraith is not a Soul, it does not have a Soul.
You do mention this later on when you start talking about the wraith.
That's what makes them so terrifying and why they suck out all the light when you look upon them, snuff out all of the candles and small fires in the room and seem to pull in the light.
They are a "Soulless Void". If you read the 5e Monster Manual for the Wraith you will note under 'Vile Oblivion' you would note:
"...sometimes the soul becomes so suffused with negative energy that it collapses in on itself and ceases to exist the instant before it can shuffle off to some horrible afterlife. When this occurs, the spirit becomes a soulless wraith-a malevolent void trapped on the plane where it died."
They literally exist to snuff out all life without any form of conscience, just a pure manifestation of a malevolent will.
Hard to explain why the Wraiths are so intelligent because their former life is a distant dream to them and they generally disdain their former life, although they can become fascinated by artefacts that they were fond of in life, almost like an amnesia that can be overcome by a close friend or relative, or an artefact like their wedding ring or a childhood toy. The whole point of the wraith narrative is that you can recall a small semblance of the soul with a totem item. This is highlighted in the bereft of body section, basically injecting a little speck of light into its darkness might just neutralise some, probably not all the hostility.
In DND, the mind is not really tied to the brain in the same way it is in our world, it's a magical world where souls, will and the weave collide, so all sorts of funky abstractions can occur like astral projection, possession, where a lot of wizards will use pure willpower to evoke effects. Take that willpower and intelligence, bereft of a soul with a lot of negative energy and you got yourself a wraith.

Hopefully you guys are still keeping up with this channel, but my whole campaign is about hunting ghosts and figuring out the reason they are ghosts to begin with. I would love to send you my beginning to my new campaign (new DM) and see what yall think if thats okay? Thank you all for these explanations!

6:30 On the tv show Supernatural, Ghosts are vulnerable to iron, and salt, but that's about it. They ignore pretty much everything else.
So in D&D, maybe they should take 1/2 Damage from iron or salt, and the Ghost loses it's actions for the next round. It has to be real iron, though, not just steel, so an iron horseshoe, an iron fencepost, iron chains, or even an iron bracelet, those can all do 1d6 damage divided by two. Because the damage is dealt by the material itself, not modified by size of the weapon or PC's Strength Bonus. When hit, the Ghost flickers out for a couple of seconds, until it can reconstitute it's Ethereal form. A circle of salt poured on the floor will keep a ghost away from whoever is in the center. A handful of salt thrown at a Ghost will also deal 1d6 damage divided by two.
I mean, at least in my campaign, it seems like a good idea.
