    Honda is not just the issue. You need to look at the packaging of the power train and particularly the location of the MGU-K which can be mounted anywhere under the curent regulation. Honda chose to locate this next to the battery in order to aid aerodynamic packing. In all likelihood, this will have been at the behest of Adrian Newey, who places aero above all else...

    Not to be a Honda apologist but there seems to be issues with Aston gearbox and also how the engine is integrated with the car. The testing issues were apparently due to excessive vibrations causing an issue with battery. We should probably wait for more information before we make Honda into punching bags?

    • @PKWeaver74
      @PKWeaver74 Month ago +9

      I agree. I would be very surprised if Honda didn't notice that the engine vibrated excessively when run on a bench. Surely must be a confluence of factors.

      MGU-K not gearbox
      Rumor is Newey's asks of low positioning of the MGU-K too close to the battery and not strengthening the chassis when Honda brought up the vibration issue. So it's definitely not all a Honda thing from what I've heard

    • @henkormel5610
      @henkormel5610 Month ago

      @sauldula
      There is a fixed geared transfercase between the crankshaft and the MGU-K. This also is being called a gearbox. The AMR build gearbox (ICE=> drive wheels) sounded horribly when shifting.

    The car harmonics are the thing that the team has built in the chassis…and they are both very different from an under powered engine that is just designed for a single team… and they both have built a vibration system that is very different from every single team. Notice how they are the only ones who have the issue

    I'm sure I can remember Murray Walker telling a story about Gerhard Berger and Ayrton Senna sharing a helicopter ride, and Gerhard picking up Ayrton's briefcase, saying "Is this yours Ayrton?" - and then throwing it out of the window. I always thought, assuming old Murray's story was correct, that would have only counted as a practical joke IF Gerhard had switched Senna's case with a dummy one before hand. If, on the other hand, he literally threw his team mate's case out of the window, then he was just being a bit of a d***! But I don't think he was. Anyway, I'm really enjoying this new podcast, thanks to the whole team.

    I'm surprised that everyone on this episode has fully accepted that engine performance is the deciding factor for this year. I accept that at the start of the season it is likely that the engine is probably the most important, but nobody is arguing that for instance later in the year the drivers who understand the rules best have an advantage or that later in the year McLaren can become better than Mercedes.... I have a feeling that a lot of reporters are going to regret focusing so much on the engine. To me at least testing showed that at least with race pace the differences are not that big, and that tells me that other aspects than the engine are going to be important when evaluating the performance of the team and drivers.

    Past performance in some respects can be considered during a major regulation change I believe, as it's an indicator of how well a team gels and works together, and how quickly they can develop through a season, we're talking about the same McLaren team that came from near back of the grid only a few seasons ago and transformed into a championship winning team, I personally think that puts them in with a good shot for this year, they've already proven they can beat Mercedes with the same engine....
