    The problem with pitting on the blades is that you have to remove metal by sanding until the pitting is gone, and sometimes it will remove way too much material from the blade. As always, we learn by doing, thanks for the video, George.

      @@2ndchancegeorge thank you for sharing your knowledge 🙂 . I am like you in so many ways and have a few thrift stores I hit from time to time that have a few buckets of various knives I pick though. I really like those older Colonial Knives and have passed on a few because of scale\ pin issues. You give me faith in trying to tackle a few of them 😉👍😃

      Lom...it's a test the first time. Get a real beater and practice stripping and redoing. The best tip I got was from Kevin (the knife doctor). Make pints on the pins and start from one side. To half way. Then use another from other end to push that one out. Let me know how you do . It's fun for sure. Be safe

    One thing I found was that after polishing a couple very old tools 100+ years old. I polished up to a chrome like finish. People didn't believe how old they were... also they lost that old "story " ... I figured out not all needed to look better than new. So i started getting the rust off and maybe some of the pitting. Then cold bluing and polish some of it back off . To me it's a cool look.

    Great job on those projects, George! You're learning by trying, and that's something we should never stop doing, no matter how long we have on this earth! Just a little hint, though. You may want to wear a particle mask when sanding / grinding pretty much everything, especially plastics. You really don't want those fibers and particles in your lungs, Buddy! That's a sure way to shorten that precious time we have left. Keep up the good work!👍

    Building up a custom knife jig to hold the pins vertical, so you can put the knife together on a hard surface may help solve your alignment issues with the SAK style knives.

    Maybe working oil into that main blade pivot could restore some snap…

    • @2ndchancegeorge
      @2ndchancegeorge  2 месяца назад

      Yep, tried that but made little difference. I think because it was used alot it's just worn out. I'll be looking for some beater knives for parts...maybe try one. Thanks for watching much appreciated

  • @cynthiajeffrey

    I had the same problem with a electricians knife. It had plenty of snap prior to me, replacing the scales and putting new pens in the knife. The trick is putting a slightly larger, stainless steel pen and that whole fixed the problem there was a little bit of play in the hole not causing enough tension in the back Spring even though you’re not getting any side, wobble or up-and-down play, it’s not creating enough tension to push the back Spring out, because if the hole in the the center is too big in the size of the pen slightly too small. It doesn’t push up/ out on the spring to create the snap. The blade rides on the pin… I hope that is making sense. Great job on the knife though. You always do everything with the spirit of excellence. :-)

  • @terrell48
    @terrell48 2 месяца назад

    That project knife was a good learning experience and still a working knife for work bench and as for the pins perhaps using a flat tip punch so you do not hit the scale directly with the hammer, that might help prevent accidentally cracking a scale but allow you to tighten up the pins, if you ever redo the knife I wonder if you swapped ends of the spring on the main blade if it would tighten up the blade and give it more snap, just wondering

    • @2ndchancegeorge
      @2ndchancegeorge  2 месяца назад

      I was thinking that. Msybe it just needs a little clean up. But I'll be trying again. Wonder if a random spring from an old beater would work...arghh gotta find some old beaters for spares...lol

    Since it is a soft plastic I doubt you can get shiny, however when I was in school we worked with plexiglass which was a plastic and if I remember from 63-64 years ago we used a jeweler's rouge which is a polishing compound which I assume is also used on jewelry , I do not know where you buy it or even if I am spelling it correct, if you can make a contact with a jeweler or an Industrial Arts instructor with a school they may be able to provide you some direction
