FYI, the captain of the Division 14 ship is an Edosan (a species introduced in The Animated Series from the 70s) Now, back to BSG: Pain and Despair! (Still saying extended cut for Peggi... =p )
1 this episode hits different now(no spoilers). 2 the Captain of the D-14 ship is the same species as a character from The Animated series. God this series is amazing
Many of the freaks are references to previous Trek episodes: * The woman in the chair with the beeps - Captain Pike, TOS ep The Menagerie * The salamander creature - Captain Janeway and Tom Paris, VOY ep Threshold * the half-old half-young guy who describes himself as "Half a rascal" -TNG ep Rascals, in which Picard and a few others are turned into children
In the Voyager episode Shattered, Chakotay had the liver of an "eighty year old man, and the kidneys of a twelve year old boy". I always assumed it was a reference to that. Just got the "half a rascal" reference to the episode Rascals 😂
Saul Rubichik is probably a reference to Saul Rubinek who has been in pretty much every sci fi universe, including on Star Trek a couple times I believe. He was Artie in Warehouse 13 and I am kind of obsessed with the show.
I got to have a photo taken with him and most of the main WH13 cast, except for Myka's actress. Fun show, even if the last season wasn't at all what I expected.
they literally put the blender to work on this one: the secret mission from "Chain Of Command", the mutant dog from "Aquiel", the transporter accident from "The Next Phase" mixed with "Realm Of Fear", the aliens from TAS and Voyager, the literal plot of the movie "Virus", even the career shun always thrown to Riker: "You could be a captain by now, you're still a first officer!"
There's also the reverse aging from "Rascals" accelerated aging from "Unnatural Selection", secretive division from anything related to Section 31 (though subverting our expectations for it), and the other ship turns into something that looks like the creature from "Encounter at Farpoint".
The Dog!! Love The Dog, she's the best. I love how they made fun of the idea of sending three high-ranking bridge officers, including the captain, on a secret mission because of some speciality that they are singularly qualified for like with Picard, Worf, and Crusher in Chain of Command.
Fun Fact: Lt. Drew Pratchett (the Rigellian officer accompanying Captain Ramsey) and Ensign Ellis (one of the two officers melded together in a transporter accident) are voiced by Maurice LaMarche; the voice of Brain from Pinky and the Brain, Mr. Big from Zootopia, MANY characters in Futurama, and a host of other shows and films.
Every time I see this episode (specifically the end), I get vibes of "Encounter at Farpoint". I can't be the only one who sees the alien that ate the USS Rubidoux as the same species as the one forced to become Farpoint Station, right?
You know who thought like Beckett says she is? My grandfather. In the Army, he never rose above Private First Class but it was largely because he knew he was good at doing the work (he was in the Corps of Engineers, building bridges -- and occasionally blowing them up -- and one that never had to get blown up was standing in England 25 years later) and felt he'd be wasted supervising the work. Then he was a truck driver at LaGuardia for years. That's what he felt he was good at. Maybe I am too, I wonder...
Did someone already mention that the orange guy is from a race from ST:TAS? They did? Then I got nothin. Oh! One of the freaks is a catfish, which is a thing from Voyager....that you won't watch...yeah...back to nothin.
15:12 I completely agree with Paula about hiring. I've done a lot of hiring, yet I've never asked the cliched "where do you see yourself in five years?" question, because I've never been hiring for a role in the distant future, and promotion and succession planning are separate processes that flow from candidates' on-the-job performance and personal growth needs.
It's such a terrible question and gets more pointless the older you are. Never could've guessed I'd be here 5 years ago, and never had a hint of a clue I'd be there 5 before that. It's the adult equivalent of "What do you wanna be when you grow up?" I'm at the age now where the answer is legitimately "Dead."
I've always loved that Tendi, being unaware of canine naming customs, insists on calling the dog simply, The Dog! :D It really highlights how some human traits would look rally weird to an outsider. How many other species would take members of species from entirely different evolutionary tree into their homes and care for them as well as their own offspring?
I like what youre saying about not wanting to go fully career mode. I got a friend whos wife expected him to get an education and work a better paid job. Not working in storage but in the storages bureau. 2 years he followed that education and when it was time for the exams he fumbled it kinda subconsciously on purpose. He finally came to terms that its totally ok to keep doing what he does and not promote and go up the ladder.
There's a Lt. Arex from Star Trek: The Animated Series who is of the same race as the Captain of The Farm ship. Arex was part of the bridge crew (navigator) and is an Edosian.
Sometimes you get to a point in your career and you just don’t want to leave because the job changes at higher levels and you like the job you’re doing.
P.S. @KatAlysha and @PaulaDeming, a few years back, I watched *all* of #BattlestarGalactica--the movie and all 70-something episodes--in *one* week!! You two ever see on #RUclips the BSG binge parody skit on "Portlandia?" I *lived* that!!! LOL!!!!
Great episode. People should be rewarded for their time and dedication at their job, not their desire to rank up. Good stuff. Star Trek future is the best sci-fi future, even with all the lumps and bumps along the way.
I watched S1 a couple of years ago then never got around to watching any more of it. After watching a few of your reactions I decided I needed to go back into it and watched the whole thing again. Couldn't remember any of the first series, but have now seen all of the episodes on Amazon Prime. Pain in the arse that the following series are not available there (without paying extra!)
Yeah, they made Season 4 a Paramount+ Extra Subscription series and then shunted Season 3 into that paywalled sub too, when it had previously been a Prime show. Needless to say, when you can just manage a Prime Subscription costs and can't afford to pay that extra it sucks, which means for me, I haven't seen ANY of season 4 :-(
Ever since Paramount cancelled Prodigy for tax breaks I went back and got all this stuff on Blu ray. I know it isn't a solution if people don't want physical media anymore. Though the Blu rays have great extras.
Looks like paramount + is posting full episodes of lower decks on RUclips to gauge interest in the show. Everyone should go over there and watch and like and comment and all that so we can #savelowerdecks
15:12 Yes yes. I’m content with my job and don’t really have aspirations to do more because I’m not my job- my job is just what I do to fund my ability to live and do the things I actually want to do without cheapening them through monetization in this capitalist hellscape. I use to do graphic design and having to draw and paint for others as a job completely drained me of the impulse and ability to make things for myself and my own enjoyment, and I never want to be in that situation again.
not everyone has the skill, talent or ambition to be a leader....if everyone were leaders, who would they lead.....too many cooks in the kitchen ruin the souffle..
I'm a healthcare professional, I run cat scans all day. While I am qualified and have been offered managerial positions, I have absolutely no interest in moving up. This is what I paid money to university for, this is what I want to do until I'm too old to push the buttons.
At some point, girls, you will need to react to Discovery and Strange New Worlds. Because it's all connected. In a grand conspiracy. To conquer the galaxy. Or is it to rob us of any semblance of free time away from Star Trek. One of these.
Sorry to be a nag, but I feel I need to make this point, and now seriously: before the beginning of Lower Decks season 4 you need to have watched both seasons of Strange New Worlds. There's a reference to a tie-in on LD 4x01 that makes watching a certain episode of SNW very advisable. And to watch that episode, it's better to have watched at least two other specific episodes. And by now there's no point in not having watched the entire show.
New to the channel but it’s truly enjoyable to watch people become Trekkies. Discovery didn’t “grab” me in the first episode, therefore I haven’t committed to that journey yet (and maybe I’m going a little out of order), but Strange New Worlds is damned amazing. The production, the music, the stories, the acting, the action, Nurse Chapel with a personality… So good! I’ll be watching along whenever The Gallifrey Gals do.
Odd... for some reason the episode started halfway through your review for me. Not an issue, I just rewound it (crap, that phrase shows my age), but still odd.
THIS is why Star Trek Lower Decks is the best of Modern Trek (with Strange New Worlds a close second). It doesn’t mess up Star Trek past, then its future. It doesn’t try to become a wrap up series of a past show. It doesn’t aim to be an 'entry show' for young kids. This show honors the 'spirit' of Star Trek. ALL of Trek, including the three I just purposely disrespected to prove my point...
FYI, the captain of the Division 14 ship is an Edosan (a species introduced in The Animated Series from the 70s)

Aye 🙋🏻♂️
@@KatAlysha ya we are the opposite of upper deckers lol
@@KatAlysha can't wait for you to watch the season finale, it is legitemately amazing and you are gonna love it
@@R.J.Memnohc I'm not sure which of the next 3 episodes I am most excited to see the reaction to. They are all fantastic for different reasons.
I'd rather be a lower decker than a Commodore Decker that gets blown up, or a First Officer Decker that sacrifices himself to a weird alien probe.
You need to see "Farscape" it is one of the best scifi series of the 2000s!

* the half-old half-young guy who describes himself as "Half a rascal" -TNG ep Rascals, in which Picard and a few others are turned into children
And the Half-A-Rascal situation is what happens when people try to recreate that accident safely for immortality.
@Vectorspace000 also something happened to a time traveler in Enterprise that had parts of his body at different ages
In the Voyager episode Shattered, Chakotay had the liver of an "eighty year old man, and the kidneys of a twelve year old boy". I always assumed it was a reference to that. Just got the "half a rascal" reference to the episode Rascals 😂

"This is just like real Star Trek!"
A few more episodes, and you will be dropping the 'just like' part.
The Dog remains one of the all time best Star Trek things. Just the most insanely misguided science project that went horribly right.
It still felt loved and didn't lash out, so I'm cool with it.
I love the way this episode makes you think it's going for STARFLEET HAS A DARK SECRET nah we're kidding
Is section 31 not dark enough?

Man if they think this creature was dangerous, I can't wait to see how they react to the most dangerous creature in the galaxy in Season 4.
My work ambition is to leave work, and so far I achieve it every day

You like the show so much, help push for them to renew again. This next season looks to be the last unless fans can push for more.
