Great points Donald. Having to take the time to actually find a book and take the time to actually locate what you want to learn in the essence of patience. Speaking to Lin's point, schools are actually providing tablets and teaching our children that the 'one click" method is the way to learn. Society is circling the bowl as we speak.
I haven't even watched yet, but this is perfection. Every room with many books needs a ladder to get around. Can't wait.

I couldn’t agree more that growing up surrounded by books makes children smart, or at least well-educated. My house was full of books during my childhood. Both my parents loved to read. Now one of my brothers is physicist, and the other is a linguistics professor. I’m the only one without a PhD, but I have made my living as a writer, editor, and translator, which probably would not have been possible without all the reading I’ve done.

This is my dream library too! I made a mini version in my powder room to house my grandmother’s books. That tiny library is very special to me.
A double thumbs up from South Africa!!! I grew up with books, my children who are now adults, grew up with books and they are continuing the tradition of buying books as well :-D A great legacy to leave. Only problem is that there never seems to be enough bookshelves lol

I'm an avid reader, and I have both physical books (like a ton) and also an e-reader. The reason I have the latter is because I can't possible take all those books with me on vacation. Seriously, otherwise I wouldn't be able to travel.
But nothing beats having a physical book in your hands. Even now I'm downloading books and bookbinding them myself to enjoy them even more
That is the kind of living room that I love. I agree with you about books. I LOVE them. Don't get me wrong, I also love my Kindle, but I would rather give up my Kindle and my TV rather than give up my books. I just love to take one down and thumb through it. It may not seem like it, but you are expanding your mind, learning, growing. With books, you can enter any world and belong in it.
I also love books, I can't seem to read from a screen, I need to read from a real book page. I have 1500 books at last count, I donated some a few years ago at book fair that they held to raise money for a good cause. Is there such a feeling as doner remorse? because I feel something.

I’m 15 and I’ve only read 4 books in my lifetime, but when I’m older I would love a bookshelf like this!
Linn thank you so much for sharing, this is my favorite video of yours. Not because of the project, but because of your statement about books. You have a great collection with some wonderful authors including my favorite Mark Twain. When my grandmother gave me Tom Sawyer then Huck Finn I was hooked for life. LOL it was also my grandmother that got me to love woodworking.
Another great job!! You make it look easy. I have done a lot of woodworking projects over the years and I know there is a lot of work behind the scenes that consume a lot of time and effort. It looks great!!

You made a nice job of the Library Linn , it looks nice and bright and warm which is important for sitting down and reading or studying , one thing I would like to say about the moving bookcase ladder , I wouldn't have had the wheels going along over the carpet or rug , I would have kept them to going along the wooden floor .

I mostly agree with “analog” books, and I have a lot of books. But most of my reading is non-fiction, and I like to have access to the choice bits. I’ve always been a big “highlighter” so using a Kindle was a natural step for me. Plus I have instant access to all my added ‘notes’ as well as the ability to search for content easily. But for fiction, and children especially, paper is the way to go. Lin, you have excellent taste which shows in your video edits. Watching your videos is strangely relaxing.

Yeah, I really like books. GF finishes are easy to work with. Good choice. Really nice project. As for the hassle of building you mention, I really like using the stuff that I build so much more than the stuff that I've purchased. Tables, cabinets, chairs and so on. It's worth it.

I'm with you. Books are some of my most precious possessions. All this min', "sparking joy" stuff is garbage. Give me my books and an enjoyable place to read or create and I'm happy. So are many people. It's a fade I hope fades fast. Love your library wall.

A great idea to install a ladder, not just for reading but also for dusting. I find that hard-backed books are preferable to paperbacks, especially when there are large numbers of pages. Hardbacks are easier to hold open, and the printing tends to be better. Do you use a specific reading lamp for evening reading ? I couldn’t agree more on the importance of having books. We also purchased dozens if not hundreds of books at library warehouse sales, as well as thrift stores and decades of purchases. We probably have 2-3x what you do there, and have made do with IKEA shelves, screwed together and attached to the wall. The main thing i did was reconfigure all the shelves and screwed them in ‘permanently’. Its about 20 lineal feet of shelves floor to ceiling.
I was a little doubtful how that would turn out but it turned out AMAZING i love it

I'm incredibly new to the DIY scene and I was curious with your suggestion of IKEA bookcases how you'd be able to make sure they are sturdy enough and don't fall over with the addition of the ladder? And how could you build higher than the normal bookcase size? Thank you for your help.
Lin you should look at doing some bookbinding. Its not as hard as you think and there are tonnes of great tutorials on RUclips. Then you can have shelves and shelves of books you've (re)bound yourself!

Yeah, Sea Lemon is where I would recommend you start. Long stitch binding or saddle stitch binding are nice ones to start with as you don't need many tools beyond a needle and thread and you can make the covers from anything you have lying around.

We turned our “formal dining room” into a room of book shelves. Once we get a house I plan on building bookshelves for the living room with a wrap around ladder.

Really Nice...when you move out you should leave a copy of your favorite book and a Picture of you building the bookcase...(maybe on the inside of the book you could leave a note about the house also...a lot of times when I have read a book I will write what I think of it on the inside cover and put my email address there..then give the book away or leave it for someone)

As a former academic with a lot of books it is my observation that 99% of the people with a ladder in their library don’t read books they “decorate” with books. Same function can be accomplished with a nice library step stool and it is easier to use and a lot less cumbersome and space consuming.
ShepH7 ceo but when kids - of all ages - get the chance to explore 'the top shelf' they will discover more than what is available on the step stool! Kids love finding stuff.
One of my dreams is to one day own a mansion with a big library. The kind of library that's so big that you need a ladder to get to the books. Unfortunately for me I have a small house with a small bookshelf.

I have a question about the weight of this project. I’ve been wanting to do this in my house, but I’m concerned about the added weight to the flooring/joist system - especially on an interior wall.. Did you do any special calculations or did you just know your flooring system could support it? Thanks for any insight you can provide!

I remember looking at that hardware kit years ago when trying to figure out what to do about the ladder in my livingroom, it's just been out of my budget. 🙁
I did grow up with a house full of books, and I read a lot, but I also feel like a lot of people own books that they will never read, and it feels like owning books has become an intellectual status symbol rather than an actually useful enterprise. Even I own books I haven't read, because they were just too good to pass up. And I have to say that while I prefer a paper copy (hardback ideally) for educational books so that I can lay out multiple books and notes in front of me, I have read soooo many more books since I started borrowing eBooks from my library on my iPad. They're so darn convenient, and travel well, and there's no chance of people seeing the title on the cover and trying to chat with you about it while you're trying to read. But I also believe that technology is fickle: batteries die, hard drives get corrupted, internet connections go down, and sometimes pen and paper and books are far more practical, and generally cheaper too. Guess I'm saying that there's a place for both in our lives, but the part of me that grew up in a hoarder household gets a little cringe-y when people keep tons of books like trophies and hardly ever read them.
Oh, just thought maybe this might get misinterpreted. I wasn't trying to imply that you're one of those people, just making a casual observation from past experiences. I do love the look of this library, and someday maybe I will have something like this, but for now I have loads of folding bookcases...

do you think the bottom wheels would be alright on a regular (not shaggy) carpet? i know rocker says "low-pile", but that could mean industrial carpet...not really very specific. also, do they have a corner rail?

I totally agree with you about books. But there's another thing parents should do for their children: never throw away broken toys. Keep the pieces in boxes, because when the kid gets older he/she can start building it's own new toys from those parts. 😊
