I don't see why they are burning all this fuel to do this when Guatemala is just gonna make another one. Give me the cost of this (including government subsidies), and I'll tell you exactly how much crude is being burned on the back end to do this. (its always a few orders of magnitude [100-1000x] more than you would imagine). A simple embargo on 3 or 4 of the offending nations would permanently solve this by a factor of 90%. Instead we are paying for millions worth of crude oil to get burned supporting megaprojects while the organizers get mega rich off of these token "efforts". The formula, btw is the cost of everything (incl. Subsidies) X 0.8 ....this gives you the dollars worth of fossil fuels used to power/support any human endeavor or project. About half is crude and half is natural gas. ...the other 0.2 is nuclear, geothermal, and hydroelectric combined together. (Wind and solar still burn around double the BTUs worth of oil to build/maintain than they can produce, so they are not included). ...but run those numbers on any project you see like this so you can get the full picture. We have an obligation to do this right.

The patch is a widely dispersed area consisting primarily of suspended microplastics, ranging from fingernail size to smaller.
Totally agree, many thanks to all involved. Why do people just throw their rubbish in the ocean and boats and some ocean liners their waste overboard. It is sickening to see soo much plastic and other debris floating in the water and killing and maiming our ocean life.
Well I guess it worked, the fluff piece that is this story. I'm not trying to take a dump on Oceans Clean Up, but do you even realize how small 200,000kg (420,000lbs or 220 tons) is compared to the overall size of the GPGP? The GPGP is triple the size of France or double the size of Texas and has a mass of 80,000 tons, so the 220 tons they extracted was less than 0.3% of the GPGP. While the GPGP is the largest garbage patch in the ocean, it's not the only one, there are two slightly smaller in the Atlantic, and dozens of smaller ones scattered everywhere. 98% of these garbage patches are plastic and Ocean's Cleanup claim they a recycling those plastics, I'd like to know where?? The reason they're in the ocean is because only about 5% of the plastics we use are recycled. There's no mo money in recycling the rest, and in a capitalist world, no profit mean nothing gets done. We in the U.S. ship our plastics to underdeveloped countries who gladly take the measly money we give them and dump it landfills until they realize that doesn't work and it ends up in the ocean. They claim half of it is thermally recycled, but that puts extremely harmful toxins in our atmosphere. The only real solution is to stop using these plastics in the first place, so they never get to the ocean. But that would mean sacrificing a little profit for companies, and a little more effort and a bit less convenient for consumers, and we couldn't have that now could we? So instead you get videos like this one, paid for by plastic conglomerates and fossil fuel lobbyists, NOT backed by Ocean Cleanup Group, because they know how much a fluff piece like this makes people feel all warm and fuzzy thinking we've got a handle on environmental waste and can go on blissfully destroying the planet so they can sill have the convenience of disposable everything, guilt free.

Although I support this idea, I am a bit suspicious of this video. Why is the garbage they collected so clean and uniformed? It's like they just filled a bag with pre-selected rubbish to attract investors to scam.

What a waste of resources... 7t of plastic isn't even a drop in the ocean, figuratively. With 14,000,000t added each year, we stem just 0.00005% of the issue. You gotta be a complete buffoon to applaud this nonsense. It won't work.
A fantastic effort! The world really needs to get behind this program! We put the stuff there, and we have to remove it!
Subsidies) X 0.8
....this gives you the dollars worth of fossil fuels used to power/support any human endeavor or project.
@@SuperPhunThyme9Your formula implies that every cost of every project is simply reduced to the cost of fuel.

Despite the common public perception of the patch existing as giant islands of floating garbage, it can't bee seen by satellite imagery, or even by boaters or divers in the area. The patch is a widely dispersed area consisting primarily of suspended microplastics, ranging from fingernail size to smaller.
This is wonderful. You deserve more recognition
No because it's fake and so are most comments and replies are ai generated
@CaptainFordo21 buy some glasses. This shit is fake dude... it's called cgi
Thank you, inventor Boyan Slat!!!
You guys are amazing. Thank you so much. I wish people would recycle And have a heart to think about the animals.
On Earth❤
Thank you to everyone involved in this project. We are in your debt. ❤
Best news I’ve heard in a long time.
So true
It actually make me tear up a bit. It's just bad news all around, these days. It's such a nice feeling, to witness something like this.
I’m sorry to break your guys heart, but that plastic will just be used to make more plastic which will go right back into the ocean 😂😂 it s a never ending cycle, that’ll only stop when Armageddon hits
Except it means nothing because people are still dumping shit in the ocean
It's fake, the OceanCleanup dumped these big trash piece into the water to fish them out for the cameras.
The plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is broken down and floating beneath the surface.
The Ocean Cleanup hasn't actually cleaned up anything in over ten years, despite getting millions of funding - ironically from the plastic
industry, the very polluters in the first place.
I wanna thank you for doing that. Thank you so much.❤
So they are taking the plastic they retrieved and making more plastic with it? That sounds like a never ending cycle to me!
