Just bought mine today! So excited, such a beautiful car. It’s got 150 miles on the rebuilt motor and a 5 speed manual. Thanks for helping me decide!
Awesome! Glad I could be of some help!
"One man CAN make a difference."
Original owner of a 1989 Firebird Formula 350 black. Iso love these cars.
Throttle body injection is what you have on your car. It is a reliable system but no many people know how to work on them.
Your VATS is working as the security light came on and went off so it may be the relay in the driver kick panel behind the sound proofing. It's the starter relay for the VATS. You can replace the relay or simply put some spade connectors on about 3 inches of 12 gauge wire and jump the two large wires on the relay pigtail.
Nice- love those pop up headlights.. Have fun!!
Thanks so much! It is a blast!
Yes until the head light motor goes out right after i get my on the road😳😂
Lucky guy I always wanted one
Man, I have an all black 4th gen Firebird. But the 3rd gen just looks way better. 🔥
Man this car just excites me. I had always wanted one! Thanks so much for watching! New video up really soon!
The 4th gens have a lot going for them the LT1 was a great power plant! Great style and interiors too.
Nice video Mark! After some research, it seems that the carburator is a Rochester. Also, if you were looking to get more out of that carb hp wise, don't bother. It is what it is. You'd have to go bigger. As in engine build, etc.
It's actually a early throttle body injection 😁 and she does really good for what it is.
The memories poured in when the engine growled on.😊✌🏾
We’ve got to get our Foxbody looking like they. Gorgeous car man! Congratulations!
Thanks! I really love it
I have always wanted a fox body! Maybe one of these days
Had a 88 formula 350 back in the day. Just bought a 89 1 owner Arizona formula 350 with 105 thousand miles. Car is pretty much flawless so happy I was able to find a clean one. Added the stage 2 hyper tech performance chip flowmaster exhaust changed the thermostat also added cold air in take.
Got my 89 formula 5 speed today in michigan! Clean. 123,000 miles. Fair price of $5000. Performed burn out as I left seller!
Nice!
My first car was a 1989 black formula 5 speed 350. Loved it and miss it so much!
God to have that as a first car would have been incredible! My first car was a 1988 Plymouth horizon lol
That must have been a conversion because the factory didn't offer the 5.7 (350) with a manual transmission.
@@Sandhill1988 correct.i bought mine new. 350s only had auto in 1989.
I have an 87 formula I bought from my aunt about 10 year ago,she bought new,had 52000 miles and now has like 57000,has been garaged it's whole life, not driven in rain or snow.only thing it needs it's the wrap around spoiler that is known to crack.ive thout about putting an LS in it,but is too good of an original to take apart.still has the original radio cassette that works.
That's awesome! I am so happy with mine
I just picked up an 89 from a family friend same thing garage kept no rust and all original miles not aslow as yours but 88,000 original miles isn't to bad . I feel same about the ls swap its kinda awesome as is for what it is
Dream car!😍
My dad had a VATS issue on his '87 Corvette, and it was pretty easy to figure it out for some incidents.
Step 1: close the door
Step 2: turn key, engine starts
Step 3: that's it
Throttle body injected. I bought an 89 Formula brand new in 89. Red, 5.0 ltr.. loved it.
I figured that out lol. I had just never had one this old with it before. My other 3rd gen had the horrible rodchester quadrajet on it.
@@carsontheFritz Had an '88 Formula with the Tuned Port Injected 5.0 and a 5 speed. Surprised quite a few Mustang GT's back in the day.
@@kbozz71 a 5 speed would be awesome!
I had one a lot like this. I miss it.
Man I’m envious lmao. This car is so fucking cool
Thanks I absolutely love it! But sadly might have to let it go pretty soon.
The KITT kit makes it look like an old VW beetle.
Lol I am not sure what you mean. Mine is still stock. It hasn't had any conversion done. It just might be to nice for that! Thanks for watching! Check out my latest video for an awesome burnout
@@carsontheFritz No, not referring to yours, just those that have been converted to KITT cars. Something about the wheel caps that make them look like beetles. Wider rims would look better with those Kitt caps maybe. Nothing worse than a car body that overhangs the wheels. I reckon a Kitt car with the Trans Am spoilers would look mean. Nice car man. Where I live they are like hens teeth as the few that came into the country were imported by individuals.
There is a VATS bypass kit available. I put one in my 91 Vette. Works great b
Did the bypass and replaced the ignition switch. Starts every turn now!
I had a red 89 just like it, it had white and grayish stripes around the bottom which gave it along lean look, people stared whenever I cruised around in it, ttops, hood scoop, looked much more expensive than it was, I had to let it go later, but regretted it for a long time. I just got a 2002 firebird orange sunset hardtop, I’m restoring it best I can. Really loving driving it around. I had to have one more firebird. You’ve got one of the best looking ones I’ve seen. A knight rider, enjoy. I’m subscribed, look forward to later news on your formula.
Yeah I have lost a few cars that I didn't want to let go in my years....66 mustang, 85 Z28, 66 f100, all great cars!
Im not a firebird guy but i do love that one looks real good
Thanks a lot! As an 80s kid you know it just screams "turbo boost" 🤣
I’m thinking of getting a firebird and I’m really excited for it
What year? And do it! I really love mine...it's not crazy fast but it's really fun to drive.
85-88 Camaro Firebird TPI 5.0 5.7 Tuned Port Injection Throttle Body, I owned one in 1989.
Nice base but you got a lot of work ahead of you my friend. Best of luck.
4:33 not sure if the anti theft is the same across the next few gens of GM, but on my lumina we had to go under the steering wheel and take the cover off for the anti theft and jump across the two wires with a resister
I know it is, I’m the same way, watchin Knight Ryder since a kid way back so I know how you must feel
Nice bird!
Yeah not bad for 2k in 2020...lol I absolutely love this car!
I had an '89 Formula 350 back in the day, the car was pretty quick, low 14's in the quarter mile stock.
Mine feels much faster than my 85 Z28 that I had when I was younger!
Ya down here in Florida since we have no emissions inspection we keep the catalyst converter on but we guy gut it out to add more flow to the exhaust gives it a throatier sound.
Cool car you have a TBI fuel injection ITS STOCK throttle body injection
Yup figured it all out!
I have the same one! only in white and with the weak 2.8 liter lol, currently sitting in my garage ready for an lt1 swap!
Oh that sounds like fun!
Get ready to spend your kids inheritance.
Beautiful car. I bought one new. But mechanically and structurally a real pos.
I have a 2001 Firebird convertible with the 3.8L motor and it's fast enough for me. But I had the same problem with the anti theft key thing. I went to a car dealer that still has Pontiac parts and they made me a new key and no more problem with anti theft thing.
Had a 1990 it was the ultimate, same motor they made it for 5 years mine had crossport ramair fuelinjection doesnt get any better
Nice!
Yours is near identical to my 89 except the fact that I have a 5 speed stick shift version. I absolutely love mine regardless of the problems it had when I bought it.
Oh man! I bet it is a blast with a 5 speed! The car is such a pleasure to drive!
@@carsontheFritz she's a beast, with long tube headers and a full exhaust she definitely sounds like it now.
@@Tick25 mine has full flowmaster exhaust. It needs headers though. It has 206k miles on it.
@@carsontheFritz I have 107k on mine 101k difference😂 but yours seems like it was taken much better care of then mine.
@@carsontheFritz it has some running issues and I have some body work to tend to thanks to the salt they throw on the streets where I live
Mine was a 350 white ..yes factory finest for 1990 dam fast
The gearing and torque are really great!
Probably already been answered but I'll give you my input on your fuel system. What you have there is aTBI unit most likely manufactured by Rochester for General Motors , and yes it is fuel injection. The difference between TBI what you have and the TPI the tuned port injection is your TBI has two fuel pods mounted on top of what appears to be a carburetor body but yes it is fuel injection by the way of to fuel injection pods. The fuel is metered and sprayed down directly through the intake manifold (wet manifold) then it flows into the heads / combustion chamber. A TPI tuned port injection system is a sequential multi-port fuel injection system ( each cylinder has its own injector) and it operates with a dry manifold (no fuel passes through it). The manifold on a TPI draws the air through the butterflies on the throttle body unit that's mounted to the front of the air plenum through "tuned" air runners as the air intake. Great for lo end to mid range torque. The TPI is absolutely a better performer but is much more complex and troublesome. I have the same TBI on my 89 formula and it is absolutely reliable predictable and much easy to service.
Interior is in good condition I wouldn’t go as far as saying amazing the whole headliner and visors all need replacement and as far as I see the drivers door panel also needs to be replaced
The only thing about the 3rd gems is you had to have that 350tpi motor or they really were just dogs. But now compared to the new cars all of the 3rd gen are sleds.
It really moves. I am not unhappy
@@carsontheFritz when I got mine a few years ago I knew compared to today cars even the 6 cylinder ones it would seem Slow. But I just wanted it to have a nice rumble and throaty sound when it started and took off. They sure seemed a lot faster 30 years ago lol
Mine had been pretty well taken care of and already had a nice Flowmaster cat back exhaust. It will cook-em even on the 2-3 shift. It's everything I could have asked for out of a 30 year old car that cost 2k
i turned my 89 formula 305 into S2 kitt
@@callsignsleepwalker7231 got into an accident last week, so now the conversion begins!
@@callsignsleepwalker7231 any pics or videos?
Da car is a real beauty 👌
I may of missed it but does it have a CD player?
It does! But of course that's not stock! These came with a 1.5 din cassette deck from the factory
I'm only 16, and I have been trying to find a Firebird sooo bad because I own all of the parts to turn it into KITT. But sadly it's like finding a cool bug under a rock, you just have to flip over the right one. Oh and if you are wondering how I have all of the parts for KITT, my Dad gave them to me.
That's epic! You will find one when it's the right one for you to find!
Throttle body injection. Standard for the year.
My neighbor has one of this.. hes asking 4900 only 37k miles.. is that a good buy..
Everything works on it .. I dont know alot on this cars. Plz any advice
If it's anything like the shape my car is in buy it! They are awesome cars
GM throttle Body injection, not a carb. It's a LO3 305 (5.0L) engine and a 700R4 transmission. You will want to get to know "top down solutions" he makes and sells rebuild parts for the rear hatch pull down and headlight motors. Hawks motorsports for alot of the interior and body and specifically makes a fiberglass version of the heavy rubber aero spoiler (thou if you are making a KITT it's the wrong spoiler you want the base pedestal spoiler). The kit bowling ball hub cap wheels are impossible to find cheap. You will also want to check out big brakes upgrade he makes brackets to put 4th gen fbody brakes or even brembos off 5th gen but the brembos will not fit in the KITT wheels, the 4th even is a tight fit in 16s and probably won't fit in the KITT wheels. I have a 5.7ls1 and T56 swapped 89 formula, did the swap about 3 years ago but have owned the car since 1997 so I know them through and through. Here is most of the details on my LS1 swap process www.thirdgen.org/forums/ltx-lsx/748741-ls1-swap-after-years.html
Awesome! Yeah I figured out it was the TBI....tons of awesome info though! I appreciate the comments and the watch!
boy am i glad i watched this video and read some comments, i just inherited an 87 Formula and the websites you mention are perfect for what i need to fix my car, thanx !
I bought my 1989 roughly 6 or 8 weeks before you bought yours. Pretty sure my channel is public have video or 3 up there. Im as happy as a pig in a shit farm also..
I had an 85 z-28 when I was in my early 20s....the firebird seems like such a better car.
Hey nice car! I have one exactly the same, 😁
I m in California, failed smog because of high emisions NOX,
Do you know how to lower the emissions on this car?
I would try a fuel system cleaner first.
A good one. Like a lucas oil product
@@carsontheFritz Thank you!
It's not as straight as you think.. I would put money that car has been in a wreck or at least had that rear 1/4 replaced. I have 6 birds; two 2nd gen, two 3rd gen, two 4th gen. One of my 3rd gens is '89 Formula 350.
What you have is an EFI, which is a basic fuel injection. Early on (Early 80's) were actually functional. If you look around you can find the old EFI cold air induction for them, $4-600. It will give you a little boost in power. Also if you are in a state without emissions testing.. Throw away the cat and get an X pipe or true duals.
it very well might have been at some point! god knows my 66 mustang was and I had no idea! my mustang was like half bondo on the drivers side! but I am still super happy to have this car! ! have the mesh to make the hood bulge functional just have to find the top of the air cleaner to make it functional.
I miss my 98 t top
The 4th gens with the LS1 is a great car!
Do all Formulas have a 350 in it? I’m supposed to be getting one but don’t know if it’s a 305 or 350
No they don't mine is a formula and it has the 305
@@carsontheFritz Damn that kinda sucks the 305 is wimpy lol, thank you though
@@tylerhillkirk2165 305 and the 350 are the very same engine. Buy one with a 305 drive it till the engine goes and build a 350 while enjoying the 305
@@tylerhillkirk2165 stock some of them yes the ones with the engine code l03 which is what he has and what I have but they can be made to have much more power you just have to know how to get it out of the engine. Right now the stock engine in that vehicle he has should be putting out 170 horsepower but with enough modifications can't be built to put out close to 400 horsepower. I have the same engine and I'm currently on track to a 300 horsepower build. Also changing the rear end gear ratio to a minimum of a 3.23 gear ratio possibly a 3.73. My cars 5.0 / 305 will eat most stock and some modified 350s for breakfast. I don't race but the numbers don't lie.
Its throttle body injection i have a 92 just like it
Yup totally figured that out after! Just hadn't seen one like it before!
About how much does one in that condition go for?
One would typically would spend like 3500-4000 I got mine for 2k
Thank you so much for the comment and the watch!
Throttle body injectors.
Hope you didn’t make it a kit car
I didn't. Its just to nice to do that to.
Is there a big difference between the 88 and the 89?
No they should be virtually identical
@@carsontheFritz in terms of millage is there a specific number with these cars that would make you hesitant to buy it? I've seen a few I really like but over 100k miles close to 200k
@@drakozero8 I got mine with 200k on it. You aren't gonna want to pay what someone is going to want if it has low miles. For me it was worth every penny. I plan to pick up another engine so that when this one goes I can drop in another and put the one that's in it on a stand.
@@carsontheFritz is there a specific year to stay clear of? The one I found is an 82 so not sure if it's best to get the slightly modern versions. They all seem to be around the same price couple thousand bucks.
@@drakozero8 if you want to make a kitt then 82 is the most desired year!
Sheesh......bondo
get rid of the junk VATS system it sucks stranded me for two years and hundreds of dollars in replacing bunch of parts testing every single wire in the dam car i decided to buy a Vats Bypas module that sends the correct signal to the Computer its simple to instal tops 30 min install it right at the ECU wiring and no more errors dead battery ect
Ohhh that sounds awesome
160hp! Must really go fast
Stock was 170hp and this has full Flowmaster exhaust and I am pretty sure it has a power rebuild done at some point in its life.
The interior is a horrible shape
Just the headliner
