The Italian L3/33 CC is a pretty infamous gremlin / rat tanks in War Thunder. It also carries the title of the smallest tank in the game (as far as I know). Does that make it good? I don't think so. I really wish Gaijin would've given it some kind of solid AP round.

IIRC the anti tank rifle used here has a recoil management system where the barrel retracts into the stock, similar to a Barret M82. So the barrel is actually going back into another part of the gun, not into Luigi's frontal lobe
Do you mean the bolt recoils into the stock (like a M60 machine gun), or the barrel moves back together with the bolt (like a Barret M82)? I don't know what AT rifle this is, but seems unlikely that the barrel can recoil all the way into the stock...
@@neillathotep7386 I believe the barrel and bolt assembly move together, but I'm not entirely certain. Anti tank rifles aren't my area of expertise, so I could be completely wrong
@@alnotz It's Solothurn S18-1000 (three zeros) btw, 100 is a different gun.
@@neillathotep7386 Not a different gun, just different chambering for a different ammo type. Otherwise you are right the italian designation Fucile Controcarri S Mod.39 refers to the 1000 variant
@@alnotz My understanding is that 100 is gas-operated, there's a gas tube assembly on top of the barrel (kind of looks like a AKM gas block). The barrel does not recoil back.

The funny thing about the L3 is that most doors in WT are the width of a L3, *Despite the L3 having the width to have 2 people inside it*

I believe the rifle's barrel is the only part reciprocating during firing. The same way the famous 40mm bofors' barrel recoils.
yeah, you can even find the gun being fired over on forgotten weapons under the name 'Solothurn S-18/1000' as the gun in this tank is a licenced production of it.
The technical term for this is long recoil operation
Its a solothurn, you can tell cause of the brake... they have infantry sled versions which are probably better economically than wrapping a paper thin hull around it lol

when the l3/33 cc was still in the beta version of the Italian tech tree i remember it having pretty good pen even for a little while after the Italian tech tree was fully released, but i guess they nerfed it at some point.
I remember the same , I could kill almost anything in tier 1 with well placed shots , the armor was not a problem often

@elpollo2805 i believe it's because ww2 german 20mm ammo finally got nerfed in recent years, and many Italian vehicles use the same ammo, including this.
Honestly despite the side-effect of making the L3 even worse these nerfs were long warranted and it astonishes me that it took this long, pre-nerf german ww2 20mm ammo was absurdly good, better than modern 20mm ammo in IFVs, turns out those values were wrong, Obviously.

I remember the moment in War Thunder that got me hooked on GRB instead of GAB. I was in an L3 and successfully used a dead tank to hide from an enemy then got the kill on the flank. Fun little thing.

The concrete walls or trenchs use to hide the hull of a regular tank can hide the whole L3 or ASU 57

cap bases without anyaone able to find you
escape and hide anywhere because you smol
keep spotted an enemy for the platoon while unnoticed
bully and distract big vehicles by actual threats because they can't depress enough to get you
actually access parts of the map not intended for you to be in (there are a couple of maps where you can actually slip through the tank traps and go outside the map)

Utter confusion. First time i saw one i went to it and started driving around it to understand what it was (after shooting it of course). After the match i inmediately searched for it and went to unlock it
1:28, oh no, not necessarily. You see, it's just called long recoil. What that means is that the whole gun may not necessarily be recoiling, but just the barrel is moving back, while the (if properly mounted) receiver would stay still. So think of the 40mm cannons on the m42 and m19a1, the barrels recoil back with the bolt to eventually unlocking the bolt until they both go into battery. So the receiver isn't necessarily "annihilating his skull"... that is assuming that the it mounted properly.

interesting fact, the gun the L3 uses is a Solothurn S18-1000, which was an interwar shoulder fired AT gun. That's why it is mounted so close to the gunner, due to the optic being integrated into the receiver of the gun. A gun store where I live has one of these on display and yes it is absolutely massive for a shoulder fired weapon. It was broken down where the barrel meets the receiver and two people would transport the halves.

Since the S18 is capable of accepting the magazines of the Flak 30, it seems odd the ammunition specs are so terrible as they are in-game. If you compare it to the Flakpanzer for example.
@@RyuakiraX yeah it is a bit strange, although it could have been unable to accept certain loads due to different chamber geometry or pressure ratings than those of a mounted AA gun

Honestly my favorite tank in the game I love just how small it is. I managed to get a 12 kill streak once in a game along with 5 assists. Never even came close to that afterwards though

Hey Spookston, given how much you enjoy French vehicles, you should give the AMX-50 Foch a go. Very mobile for a casemate TD, good armor, and the same 120mm as the Surbaisse/Surblinde at a lower BR
brother I have been trying to use that thing and only go against Germany and Russia so it's always atgm and heat rounds that pen every single time

I knew a friend who played HOI 4 that did War Thunder's Italian tree.
They were the ones that got me into the tech tree to begin with, and helped me rank up all the way to 3.0.
He was a native to San Marino who had great pride playing the tanks on Italy.
One of the best memories I had with him was when he downed 3 - 4 tanks in a 2.0 line up at Eastern Europe.
In the fire and blaze, he screamed "ITALIAN SUPERIORITY" whilst gunning down everyone going into the B point.

I'm pretty sure this thing has functionally the same "api" ammo of the Italian 20mm, but it fires four times as slowly. It is an absolute gremlin though and I love to play it!
I think the penetration is almost identical but the 20mm still seems to do more damage somehow

They should add the flamethrower variant in game. Maybe a researchable modification that gives this thing a fuel trailer like the Churchill Crocodile and replaces the 20mm with dragons breath.

The barrel moves separately from the rest of the gun I believe it’s a long recoil action like a m2 50 cal where the barrel and receiver move back together inside the gun until the pressure is low enough for safe extraction and ejection

Now do the M11/39 which has the same pen but more HE filler, I personally love using the snow camo as it hides the fact my actual gun is in the hull pretty well and the turret doesn't have enough armor to fuze APHE shells usually so you usually get away with being hit :)

Regarding the gun recoiling into the gunner's face, I assume that it's only the barrel that's recoiling and the receiver (or whatever you call it on cannons) stays relatively still.

I'll be honest, I think the biggest issue was using it as a sniper, you really have to get close and personal with this tank due to it's low pen.
The most kills I got this with this tank was 5 and that was by constantly using corners and charging/surprising players.
If you wanna continue on Italian tanks I recommend to you the Fiat-Ansaldo P40. Its aphe maybe as a low penetration at it's rank but damn those 270g of tnt are just nuts ! You can even overpressure M4 with them, and the heat round is maybe not that great but it can do the job on some heavier targets :p

The best use I've seen for it is to go after objective locations while blending in with background cars.
To answer your question about the guns recoil, it is the Solothurn S 18 1000. It’s a short recoil semiautomatic “shoulder fired weapon”, so the gunner should have his shoulder right on “the breach” because only the barrel moves. Now the real gun the barrel only recoils about 2-4 inches not the nearly a foot of recoil that the firing animation would imply.
1:44 I don't think most of those shots didn't pen the M22, the fence just ate most of those shells and the fences on Cargo Port are famous for doing that.
I've seen KV-2 APHE shells and 120mm APFSDS get eaten by those fences, that map is so poorly made.

I tend to use this little guy up to just before thermals. You can steal so many caps without anyone ever knowing you exist. Or stall caps entirely for the longest time.

Now you should play the french one, the AMR.35 ZT3. It's actually a pretty good little tank and I feel like nobody plays it or knows about it.
Try the Pvkv III. I love the cannon, with the right positioning, you can kill everything the game throws at you. And the shield, even though it is open top, seems to be impenetrable sometimes. All in all a pretty fun and good vehicle in my opinion.
They need to give the L3 a heavy tank icon so when ppl see it theyre even more confused

italy did make a decent td with a high velocity 90mm gun and actually used it in world war 2 sadly it was produced in small numbers, the tank destroyer in question is the semovente 90/53
the way to play the L3 ambush style you hide in bushes near Cap points or popular routes and wait till someone get close enough for your to take them out, your target priority is the gunner or the ammo. if your facing more than 1 enemy only target the last one in the convoy, and once you finish them off wait 3 seconds before changing positions try to be as far as possible from your last position

This thing is such an adorable little brat. Sometimes its so small some enemies would just pass right by you obliviously. What I like to do sometimes is not empty the mag but poke them every so often pissing them off. It's like the ASU-57 but nowhere near as deadly. Speaking of the ASU you should try it. I purposely bring it in top tier for the sole purpose of pissing people off and timeline wise it makes sense in top tier despite it's BR being in the WWII era. The salty tears are so delicious.

1:30 seems like there is a shoulder brace on the gun so asumably the recoil is a bit less irl and the shoulder brace would be used so this thing is basicaly a 20mm sniper riffle

I think the Charioteer Mk7 will be a nice contrast, it's a 5.7/6.3 with the gun of a Centurion mk3, it has the same zoom and gets the same APDS but it has a lot less ammo, the gun only has -5° of depression, the turret is basically made of paper and the hull is a cromwell which means reversing is abysmal.
