+Harshvardhan Mishra The spinning shafts were hand cranks, so the men inside could power the wheels. Full-sized replicas of this have been built and work just fine....but only on flat ground. Even the smallest of obstacles bring this to a halt.
For a school project I made a working model of this tank. I discovered a mistake in Leonardo's designs. The drive gears for the front wheels are located to make the wheels roll forward. The drive gears for the rear wheels are located to make the wheels roll backward, thus making the front & rear wheels oppose each other. The tank goes nowhere as the wheels dig holes in the ground. The model made in this video corrects this problem by moving the drive gears to the rear of the rear wheels, thus making the front & back wheels roll the same direction.
if you slope the armor it wont be the same height (dont know what its in english but its the math of pythagoras). if you increase the height again it will use the same amount of metal. ( i think you want to increase the height again because you need the space in it you could also just leave that and make the normal armour less high) you cannot speak of an armour increasement here but still the deflection effect is a huge advantage here. also if the tanks main shape isnt round but triangled it would increase the angle and the deflection. still nice invention and nice video
Great video! however, one thing i want to add about the sloped armor, while for avinci it isn't a big deal. On modern tanks (modern being ww1 - now) having sloped armor reduces your internal volume. The T34 had great sloped armor, but this resulted in a cramped interiour and poor crew ergonomics.
The cannons fire at 360 degrees, but how is it fired? 4 men are powering the wheels, are they also responsible for firing the cannons? And who uses the top lookout?
The Tank was intended to have small cannons facing out on all directions. and the size of the vehicle would have had room for least 12 men. The Replica of it in real life is indeed a small scale replica. the real one was to be more of a massive Siege Tank.
This might be a silly question But besides Da vinci's tank slope what was great abut that tank and I didnt understand what was the use of unecessary spining shafts Btw Front and rear wheels sets @ YT Engineer
the slanted armour don't save material. the wall needs to be the same amount longer as saved by thickness. there is no saved material. It may be easier to work with thinner material and the inner area is increased which can be good.
DunDunAstronaut DunDun No, you would need the exact same amount. If you imagine the slopes armor as a series of infinitely thin, equally long horizontal strips, you could align those strips so that they form an unslanted surface with the same thickness and no change in cross sectional area, i. e. same amount of materials used.
Technically its not a tank. the first tank was made in the early 1900s during ww1. World war one ,as you probably know was mostly fought in the trenches, and neither side could break through ,so the British started developing a armed catapiller tracked vehicle called the LAND SHIP. The first landship was called the "little willie " ,but it didn't do well during testing, so a new design was made ,called the mark 1. And when developing the Landship they called it a "tank" as cover name. So when your Talking about the first tank ,you really talking about the landship which the first one was made in the early 1900s. Tank is a nick name for landship. So actually da Vinci's vehicle is more like a armored petal car.
Fairly useless in a real warfare situation. It can't shoot anything, one well placed torch would disrupt the men driving it, one small ditch would stop it, the infantry would move aside and kill anybody trying to hide behind the small cover it provides, have fun cranking it up any slope at that gear ratio...

@@robertsurratt2758 These things would be very expensive to build when you could use the same amount of cash to hire a larger army with guns and cannons, get bogged down by mud, and could still be destroyed by well placed cannons and cavalry with torches

Da vinci simply had a genius mastermind. He was way ahead of his time.
For a school project I made a working model of this tank. I discovered a mistake in Leonardo's designs.

Yeah, it's widely thought by scholars that Da Vinci deliberately reversed the gears in case someone were to steal his designs. Good catch.
nice insight on the effect of the slope. cheers!
zenTaurus21 Thanks. It's a very cool little machine :)
can it rotate or turn? does the axle prevent you running one crank forwards and one backwards?
while people back them were throwing sticks and stones at each other, Da vinci made a bloody tank.
And the concept of a tank wouldn't be built upon until WW1, so leo was extremely ahead of his time
they definitely werent throwing sticks and stones at each other
The Renaissance when Da Vinci lived was also the time when black powder weaponry began seeing use.
Bruh, guns had already existed in this time
No he didnt. He just drew dumb sketches
This is actually pretty cool. Thanks TABS
It looks like a turtle!
Ufo*
so cool
i like turtles
the miniature tank (the white one ) moves so cute
he was inspired by a turtle when making it.

this was a great video thank you for posting it
actually if its round you can shoot in the middle to have the armor sloped less and if its triangled its as much angled as the tank is to the enemy

Muito bom.

You would need only 60% percent more when sloped

So.. It's supposed to be a walking wall/shield.. Right?
These are some interesting videos, but why do they look like they were made in 2000?
I must be the only one to come from Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
DunDude Bossman I came from Da Vinci's demons.
You're not the only one, brother assasin.
its a UFO woow so aliens aren't so advanced as we were told they stole leonardo's design from the 1400's and they still using it smh
@Ethan Sanchez lol glad u like it
Am i the only one here who camed just to see how it looks and works in order to recreate it in gmod? XD
where is the model in the description
